Some people especially in comedy embrace looking odd. I've listened to podcasts that Lauren Lapkus has done and she pretty much admits that she looks like DJ Qualls and seems to be ok with it. There's also a comedian Betsy Sodaro who is pals with Lapkus. Sodaro has a recurring role on CBS's Ghosts. Sodaro is quite odd looking and years ago in an podcast she said often auditioned for roles listed as "hag looking woman". She laughed it off. There is group of female improvisers and comedians that hang out in the same circles as Lapkus and Sodaro. Most of them are odd looking or more average looking and they tend to do character work in tv shows and movies.

Huston may look a mess now, but she was very striking in her youth, even beautiful, but not conventionally so. There was a time that was very valued in certain circles of photography and modeling. Even now many top models are weird-looking. As others have said, odd isn't ugly.

Not that being an unconventional looking actor wouldn't have it's challenges and tend to get you cast as "terrorist" "serial killer" "meth head", etc., but pretty young things like Jacob Elordi (today's Josh Harnett) come & go, but character actors (if they're talented) can work for years because they were never cast for their looks in the first place

r46 - I always thought Uma Thurman was astonishing successful as a beautiful leading lady with her decidedly unconventional and odd appearance. I never thought she was real world pretty. Then one, maybe 20 years ago, a friend and I were walking in the West Village and happened upon her and (I guess) her brother coming home. I was gobsmacked. In person, she is amazingly beautiful and captivating. Weird how, for me anyway, none of that translates on the screen but in person she was gorgeous even dressed down.

I find Linda Cardellini to be odd-looking and not at all attractive. I loved Mad Men, but I absolutely hated the scenes she was in and I wanted to smack her face every time she came onscreen.
