Greatest Duet Ever

Writer Robert Spencer

What do you think the greatest duet is? The greatest blending of voices?

by Anonymousreply 168August 23, 2018 6:29 PM

I looked at this list of the 'biggest' duets, and found it hard to decide. Some great ones listed. Maybe the Sinatras.

Interesting list r1, but it misses all the golden oldies like Judy Garland/Babs Streisand "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again" and the songs of Simon & Garfunkel.

I hate to admit it but for me it's "Endless Love." Yes, it's treacle but I have to hand to Diana. She sold it and her harmony with Lionel was at times just glorious. Don't judge me!

by Anonymousreply 8August 7, 2017 5:07 AM

R6 is the love of my life.

I can't narrow it down to one song, but I will say that the best duets are ones where the singers really know HOW to sing with each other - when to pull back, when to go all in. Too many duets are just singers singing AT each other, instead of winding their voices together in a dance. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell are a master class in how to duet.

Luther Vandross did some great duests with Cheryl Lynn, Dionne Warwick and Patti Austin.

He produced a great one for Aretha Franklin and Levi Stubbs.

[quote]Love Andrew Bird too :)

I tried. I mean, I really tried to like Andrew Bird. Bought a bunch of his CDs. I even bought a ticket to his concert (by myself, btw). But you can't understand a word the man is singing. So I gave up. I even unchecked his albums in my iTunes. Too frustrating.

by Anonymousreply 42August 7, 2017 1:27 PM

This is one of my favorite "duet", although some people (esp older ones) do not consider it as a duet. More like a collaboration or singing with a featured artist.... Hayley's chilling and haunting voice complemented B.O.B.'s rap.

by Anonymousreply 43August 7, 2017 1:27 PM

Fair enough R42 - as you say, you tried. I can work out most of them, and if I want/need to know I look up the lyrics - for songs like Scythian Empires. I think Three White Horses is pretty easy to follow as is Left Handed Kisses. Even though I'm a lyrics kind of guy (people like Townes van Zandt, Gillian Welch etc) with AB it's the music I often love - on say, Pulaski at Night with that gorgeous violin. Do you like the (somewhat connected) Handsome Family? I love both their 'toons' and the often dark lyrics. I should have put one of their songs on the 'Get me into country' thread. In fact I will, and leave the duetters in peace!

by Anonymousreply 44August 7, 2017 1:36 PM

Thanks, r44. I just turned on Handsome Family's Greatest Hits on youtube. I hadn't heard of them until this moment. I'll let you know how I like them, but on first listen, I can tell that understanding their lyrics shouldn't be a problem.

I wonder whether you're the person I found out about Andrew Bird from. Someone posted about him here, mentioning his oversized penis. I couldn't not check that out, and that led to my checking out his music.

Leather and Lace - Don Henley and Stevie Nicks

by Anonymousreply 46August 7, 2017 2:15 PM

No, that wasn't me R45. I've never even given a thought to the size of his penis. Now I'll probably ponder it every time I play him! I've heard the Handsomes described as Hank Williams meets Edgar Allen Poe - quite spooky in places but with a sense of humor to go with it. Hope you enjoy the journey.

by Anonymousreply 47August 7, 2017 2:20 PM

Which CD would you suggest as a first purchase, R47?

by Anonymousreply 48August 7, 2017 2:22 PM

The first I ever heard R48, bought on the recommendation of the salesguy in a shop in Oxford, Mississippi, was Through the Trees so that remains a sentimental favourite. Twilight, In the Air and Last Days of Wonder are also great. Some favorite songs are In the Air, All the TVs in Town, The Giant of Illinois, Tesla's Hotel Room, So Much Wine and All the Time in Airports but I like nearly all their stuff. Those come from a scattering of CDs so it's hard to say but if you like the overall sound any of those CDs would fit the bill. The closest they've come to a 'hit' is Far From Any Road, which was used in True Detective. It has 18 million you tube views, the others are in the thousands.

I'd best post a duet now to avoid being chastised.

This. Natalie Cole was a bad bitch with those piercing soprano exclamation notes and Whitney was up there in high chest voice doing lightning fast down the scale runs and flipping back into intricate head trills and melisma. Finesse and abandon in perfect rich tones. Natalie's voice was sharper and more incisive with that spinto gear to her tempo that made her boss. This is soul to soul church girl singing. Two great talents letting it rip and totally riffing off each other. They were good friends back then, it shows. Don't nobody say this is Aretha's song. I know. This one off duet was fire.
