Write A Prisoner - Make a friend or get some caged heat
Ava Lawson
There are evidently a lot of gay/bi men in jail who want pen pals, romance, legal advice, career guidance, etc. I've been writing to a few guys from the site below, and they've all been very humble and ordinary. No one has asked for money or been creepy. They'll ask about the outside world - travel, movies, TV, any sort of distraction - and tell you about life on the inside. Curious how gay guys find each other and fuck each other in jail? Write and find out. Want to know what they use for lube, or how insanely popular a gay boy who loves to suck dick can get in a crowded prison? Write and find out!
If you look over the profiles, there are a lot of weirdos and psychos out there. A few are even on death row. Be sure to look through their profile, details, and the summary of their crime(s) to get a full picture.
And if you're not interested in writing to a con directly, consider something charitable. Most prisons have lousy libraries, but they might accept donated books, puzzles, non-pornographic magazines, etc.
Put down your can of hard seltzer for an hour and write a letter to a guy who's stuck in a steel box. When one of them gets a letter from the outside, it boosts their spirits for a week afterward. It's better than a blowjob, or so I hear.

I say it every time Momma posts these links: I dread the thought of dropping dead and someone finding countless links to "Write a Prisoner" on my computer.
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 20, 2021 12:23 AM |
R1 But you're not worried about all the fatty-porn they'll find? Get over it.
The site will give you the guy's mailing address, and then you write a letter directly. Don't do the phony email systems. Most of them charge you to send it, and charge the inmate to read it. Paper letters are best.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 20, 2021 12:28 AM |
Interesting thread, OP. Thanks.

Watch out for Beau Maestas. His profile is all smiles and gentility, but look up what he did to get on death row.
A woman in his trailer park sold him some bad meth, so he and his crackhead sister broke into the woman's trailer looking for murderous revenge. She wasn't home at the time - gone to the casino - so Beau and his sister took their revenge on the woman's sleeping daughters using a screwdriver. They stabbed a 3 year-old girl to death, and stabbed her 10 year-old sister so many times that they severed her spinal cord and destroyed a few internal organs.
Why would this guy have any reason to smile?
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 20, 2021 12:47 AM |
Beau does look like a Grindr queen, though.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 20, 2021 12:49 AM |
Thanks for the backstory on Beau but really do have any useful info - size meat? STIs?
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 20, 2021 12:50 AM |
R13 Beau is on death row in Nevada, so he's not allowed conjugal visits. He spends his days in solitary, and only ever talks to his lawyer and his guards. You'll never see his cock, and it will never know the feel of another man's mouth or silky shitter around it.

Beware of Kentucky inmates, I read. They’re not gay. Kentucky inmates is apparently known for duping gay men. I read this on the writeaprisoner forum many years ago.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 20, 2021 12:53 AM |
Oh, make no mistake. They're still men, so they'll talk about sex and their dicks for page after page if you let them. I'm writing to two Texas boys - both sweet and nerdy, and both willing to talk about their round asses and eager cocks - plus one guy in federal who's bashful but has a rockin' body from the prison gym.
A guy can be fun to talk to if you're sure he's not a scammer and you can find things in common. Just keep in mind you're in different worlds, and all it can ever be is letters and heartfelt (or cheap) words.

Wait… What are you saying??
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 20, 2021 1:02 AM |
R19 These profiles are usually set up on behalf of the inmate by a friend or relative on the outside. Inmates in most states aren't allowed to access the internet while incarcerated. Since they can't take a current photo of the inmate for the profile, and a mugshot is usually too creepy, they have to find the best picture they can get. Sometimes, it's a good pic from right before he went in. Other times, it's something lame or really out of date.

| by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 20, 2021 1:29 AM |
I could spend a lot of time thumbing through profiles on that site. I like to read their profile, and try to correctly guess what their crimes are before clicking on that link (as if there's any way to know, based solely on their appearances...but whatever). But writing to them? No.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 20, 2021 1:32 AM |
R29 is full of shit. I've been doing this for a few years now, as have several friends of mine. No one has ever been approached by "guys on the outside," nor had their fingerprints or DNA stolen off a letter. The nonprofits who oversee letter-writing programs make no such warnings to people, because there is scant evidence that inmates will do anything to harm someone who writes them a letter.
Does he think inmates have a little crime lab set up inside the pokey, where they can pull prints and saliva off an envelope and use it to fuck up your life?
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 20, 2021 1:32 AM |
I've worked with prisoners as well. R29's post does look kind of alarmist, but there's a lot of truth in it. These guys have nothing to do all day but write letters. Also, the family members can be threatening or at least a pain in the ass. Frankly, I'd pass on it completely.
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 20, 2021 1:38 AM |
R32 You've worked with prisoners, yet you're this afraid of something that virtually never happens outside of "Orange is the New Black?"
Inmates in many states have a lot to do with their day. They work long hours at a job (often seven days a week), work out, stand in line for chow, stand in line for commissary, stand in line for the library, shower, work out some more, and watch TBS in the rec room. Every single inmate I've ever written to has expressed gratitude for getting a letter. A lot of them go weeks and weeks without any outside contact, and many aren't speaking to family. Given how much they write, and the tone of the letters, it's doubtful these guys are pulling a scam - especially since none has ever asked me for money or help with their outside relations. It's on you to be cautious and selective, but you should base your choices on facts and not assumptions or stories you've heard.
Human beings deserve more than standoffish stereotypes, but you do you.

| by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 20, 2021 1:45 AM |
I’ve written an inmate but never heard back.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 20, 2021 1:46 AM |
R34 Yes, four of them over the years. No one ever raped me in the visitor's room, either. As with meeting a guy from online, there's always a weird little adjustment to talking to them in person. Sometimes you can keep going normally, and sometimes it just gets too weird afterward. If you've ever met a guy off the apps, it's a very similar transition. Except you're not there to fuck, but to talk.
These guys have personalities, just like any other man you'll meet - some are awkward, some are cheesy, some are smokin' hot and cocky, and some are obvious liars - but there's also the layer of institutionalization hanging over them. You have to understand the person, as well as the person as altered by his surroundings. I've met icy sociopaths, and I've met amazing guys with heart and color I'll never forget.

Well I just wasted an evening going down this rabbit hole. Thoughts: -My first thought was, "that's a nice idea". Probably some latent savior complex. -The phrase "made some mistakes" is virtually ubiquitous. -As others have pointed out, the photos here are absolutely dated and in the best light. Google the name and include the word "prison" and the mugshots and pre-arrest photos start appearing. "He looks kind of wholesome" is replaced with "Wow, that's a lot of meth scars." -Probably half of the ones labeled "gay", if you google them mention female fiances, wives, children. Don't know if the gay thing is a mistake or a bid to invite interest. Curious that many of them tout their physical stats. -The "See Crime" is only the beginning. Even some of the more "white collar" ones, you dig a little deeper and find a list as long as your arm of other offenses. He seems like a nice Jewish boy. Credit card fraud isn't so scary. Oh wait... 4 counts of domestic abuse and armed robbery that this site doesn't mention. Generally speaking, these are not nice people. -I realized how naive and and trusting I tend to be. Best stick with my current hobbies.

A friend of a friend wrote to a prisoner. She was a single mom, and she wanted romance. So of course, she looked to the prison system. She found a good looking prisoner nd they entered into a romance via letter writing and later, via phone. (He had a contraband phone in his cell.) After awhile things cooled off, and she got closer to a new man. The prisoner didn't appreciate being dumped. He used his contraband phone to call his buddies on the outside to intimidate his ex-girlfriend and her new man.

And, they always tell homicide “they didn’t mean kill him” they just ended up chopping him up into little bits. Just like to clarify a few procedural issues: do these prison friends have your contact information, i.e., real name, home or work address, real email address, etc?
Or does the correspondence go through some clearing house so that anonymity and safety can be preserved.
I'd be wary of anyone who wants to be a "friend". Seems a healthier aspiration would just be to find someone to correspond with who isn't mired down in prison life.
| by Anonymous | reply 96 | August 26, 2021 11:29 PM |
Ask yourself why you are asking these questions, r96
| by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 6, 2021 4:02 AM |
R96
They have whatever information you give them. Letters go through the regular mail, and are not rerouted through any third-party clearinghouse. They presumably have at least part of your name, as well as whatever mailing address you want to give them. They can't very well write back to you without that, can they?
I've never had an inmate ask me for money, nor has anyone ever sent an outside party to my home to intimidate me or rape me. Nothing negative has come of it, and I've been able to give human contact to several guys who otherwise don't have much of that.
You're more likely to get stalked, raped, or murdered by some BPD twink from Grindr than any guy who's locked behind bars and walls several states away. Seems an even healthier aspiration would be to avoid judgments and stereotypes, and not treat prison inmates like animals.
| by Anonymous | reply 98 | September 6, 2021 5:06 AM |
[quote] Ask yourself why you are asking these questions, [R96]
Because I know these people. Being careful does not mean you are treating anyone like an animal. When you abandon your good judgment and instincts then you are asking for trouble. You sound incredibly foolish and naive, OP.
[quote] They can't very well write back to you without that, can they?
Yes, of course they can. You can do it through a clearinghouse or an organization's address. I find it very troubling that you have given your personal information to someone you don't even know. Would you do that to someone you only "met" in some forum - even not in prison?
Even if you "trust" your pen pal, you cannot know if others less trustworthy will get their hands on that correspondence and that information.
Please do not be stupid.
| by Anonymous | reply 99 | September 6, 2021 5:28 AM |
R99 Do you use the sex apps to get meat? It's the same principle there. Sooner or later, you're going to be alone with a guy who's basically a complete stranger. Except unlike a prison pen-pal, there won't be bars and walls separating you. Letters are as close to a zero-risk contact as you can get. The inmate can't touch you, can't get to you, can't get you fired or hurt your loved ones, and has zero reason to do so. Any hint of harassment or trouble on the outside would extend an inmate's sentence, and almost no one on the inside wants extra months/years added to their sentence because they wrote a nasty letter to someone. It just doesn't happen.
If you want to go to the trouble of using a re-mailing service just to write a letter to your hand-selected inmate, go right ahead. The guards who process the mail might flag it as suspicious or possible contraband, and shred it. You can also use a PO box and a fake name, but then what's the point of writing at all? If you're not willing to take even a minuscule risk in getting to know someone, then you're better off staying at home alone with your battery-powered friends.
And what is someone else going to do with a letter that has my name and address on it? Write me their own letter? They're stuck in a prison, and they don't have access to the internet, and most of their interactions with the outside world are monitored. You think some random inmate is going to see the letter I wrote about books and GED classes and say "I'm going to send my gang of supervillain buddies to this person's house to rape his cat," and it's going to happen? What delusional world do you inhabit?
I've been doing this for a few years, with zero incident. I know what I'm doing, and I know what I'm talking about. You're the one making ludicrous assumptions straight out of a bad Lifetime movie. If anyone's being stupid here, it's you.

R100, um no. You are an idiot.
You also know nothing about prisoners and prison life, no matter what your pen pal has told you. It would be a waste of time to tell you what could and what has happened to those whose personal information got in the wrong hands.
Enjoy your risks, Mr. Know it all.

I love this website which publishes prisoners' writings. This piece is about the rise of public masturbation in prisons

R102 - your opinion would quickly change of him in you watched him on the show. Weird and creepy . And he wasn’t even the inmate!
| by Anonymous | reply 106 | September 6, 2021 6:25 AM |
I tried to write to prisoners but it was just got too depressing. I feel bad for them. However, if you are going yo do it, set clear boundaries at the beginning. Make it clear you don’t have the ability to send them gifts or money. If you so send them something, make sure it’s inexpensive via Amazon like a paperback book and unexpected on a holiday. Prisoners on the grift will lose interest, but never forget you are dealing with a convict, and even the nicest are manipulative at best, cunning at worst.

"Research shared on our Why WriteAPrisoner page and the Federal Bureau of Prisons shows that both male and female prison pen-pals who establish and maintain positive contacts outside of prison walls, pursue educational opportunities, and seek normalization through friendship, etc. are less likely to re-offend."

I want to finally write to Ryan Idol and find out how he is doing. Where is he located?
| by Anonymous | reply 109 | September 6, 2021 7:52 AM |
I'm surprised more of DL isn't writing to whichever of the Menendez Brothers still has all his hair.
You queens would give a suck job to Andy Cunanan if he hadn't blown his brains out before capture.

I wonder if there is a UK equivalent of this?
| by Anonymous | reply 111 | September 6, 2021 7:56 AM |
I think the UK has a better system for allowing inmates contact with the outside world. They make use of furlough programs before release and at one time - maybe still - they allowed home visits for some prisoners like for holidays. We sort of have that in the US but only for people at the very end of their sentences via a re-entry program in halfway houses. I am talking about the federal system and, of course, each state has its own system.

Why are so many gay incels stupid enough to pick up random drifters and ex-cons?? I would rather jerk off all day to Onlyfans than do something this utterly foolish.
| by Anonymous | reply 115 | September 6, 2021 9:44 AM |
I can't believe this is a thing but I'm also living for it - I would totally do this if it was email only.
How do you search for the gay ones then?
| by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 6, 2021 10:41 AM |
Oh I've found the gay filter now, and I've also found this absolute specimen

How do you find the gay filter?
| by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 6, 2021 9:19 PM |
^^^ Thanks, R118. You just gave me the title for my autobiography.
| by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 6, 2021 9:25 PM |
If you are looking for a gay filter then you aren't really interested in helping an inmate - you just want a sexual or romantic fantasy.
These are the ones that will get in trouble.

Be careful of Kentucky inmates on writeaprisoner.

Especially the “gay” inmates.

It’s just more common in Kentucky for these inmates to claim gay and manipulate lonely gay men. Kentucky has more of an occurrence of this than other states. You’ll find a large percentage of “gay” inmates in Kentucky.

It’s like how scams proliferate online via certain forums. Somehow it got around in the KY prison system as a way of hustling lonely eldergays for money.

Seems like a good idea to send a strange criminal in jail a kind word and my home address. Can't wait for the day when he shows up on my doorstep. Come on people. Write to a soldier with an amazing card or school in an impoverished town with some stickers or school supplies.

Yes, exactly R131. That’s exactly it.

Very depressing, op. One guy is exceptionally attractive, speaks three languages and has been imprisoned for two decades during his prime years. Drug trafficking charges.

R134, only drug charges? Did he maybe leave something out?

The penpal site allows you to snoop and look up what the convict is serving time for. One nerdy, placid guy is serving time for manslaughter.

What about the rest of their criminal record.
Manslaughter how? He had a car accident while drinking or he strangled someone with his bare hands in a fight? See the difference?

I'm so lonely I just might do this. Isn't there some way to do this with someone not in prison. Like in the old timey days when I wrote a letter to my pen pal in Senegal?
