Worst Songs
Harper Scott
What is your vote for worst song ever? Not just bad, but the kind that gets stuck in your head and won't die off even years after anyone wanted to hear it.
My vote - Your Kiss by Hall and Oates

True Blue by Madonna. Forever ruined for me because of the dopey video contest she ran for it back in the ‘80s.
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 4, 2018 3:35 AM |
Thanks a lot, OP. I had that damn song stuck in my head all week and it had finally stopped tormenting me... until I read your post.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 4, 2018 3:35 AM |
Let's get this one out of the way, right now.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING could possibly be worse than this. It's probably played on repeat in the ninth circle of hell:

Any rock song with "rock" in its lyrics, e.g. "We Built this City". I heard it at the grocery store last week and am still traumatized.

Mathew Wilder. The video is a stupid and annoying as the song.

“Sugar Walls”......and just about everything else she did...
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 4, 2018 3:49 AM |
Shake Your Love - Debbie Gibson. A friend of mine used to turn to me periodically and sing "I just can't shake...your love." Just so that the damn piece of drivel would be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Madonna’s “Holiday”

Mmm MMM MMM
The one that starts with "Once there was a girl who."
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 4, 2018 2:25 PM |
Hotel California - the Eagles. Thankfully never stuck in my head but it gets played all the time in coffee shops and pubs. It goes on forever, to the extent that it feels as if time is starting to go backwards. It also exemplifies the music I hate the most. West Coast rock.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 4, 2018 2:27 PM |
Another vote for We Built This City by Jefferson Airplane. Absolutely HATE that song!
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 4, 2018 2:29 PM |

Dan Fogelberg is a frequent contributor to "Worst Songs." Here's the worst of the worst.

Heart Attack - Olivia Newton-Lez
How that piece of garbage managed to leap up to #3 Billboard / #2 Cashbox, while the far superior "Tied Up," stalled out just entering the top 40 is beyond me.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 4, 2018 2:58 PM |
Tom Sawyer by Rush gives me the sicks.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 4, 2018 2:59 PM |
That hideous Train song - actually either Hey Soul Sister or Drops of Jupiter. God awful.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 4, 2018 3:02 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 4, 2018 3:02 PM |
Every song by the Chainsmokers, but especially Closer:
So baby pull me closer
in the backseat of your Rover
That I know you can't afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of the mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain't ever getting older

Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 4, 2018 3:37 PM |
I hated the original version, R46 (I hated all the one-word-name bands). I actually only listened to it when Glee came around and those kids gave it an enjoyable context.

The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Vicki Lawrence's one hit.
Even Cher passed on that.

Most pop post 2000 is absolute garbage. But My Humps is really the turd at the bottom of the bowl (or bowel). This shit was number 1 in Australia and number 3 in the US and UK.
How anyone can hate on Hall and Oates is beyond me. They farted out better tunes in their sleep than the entire top 40 today.

James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go
| by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 4, 2018 4:05 PM |
"Sharin' the night together" by Dr Hook and the Medicine Show. This band did some of the smarmiest, sleaziest songs ever and I am surprised that pop culture vultures have not reused and satirized their repulsive oeuvre the way they have everything else.
| by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 4, 2018 4:10 PM |
There's a current "deep cuts" type thread making the rounds. Someone posted an artist who is one of the main practitioners of the kind of shit music r53 is talking about. I don't remember her name, but it was one of those "alternate spelling" names.

Agree. I can appreciate something like Kokomo by The Beach Boys that I hated at the time. But Eye of the Tiger and Don't Worry Be Happy still have me reaching to change the radio station.

Toni Tennille tells a hilarious story about performing Muskrat Love in the Gerald Ford White House. The Queen was present and Henry Kissinger was visibly scandalized by the song while Toni was singing it, feeling it was "inappropriate for royalty."

Toni, not Kissinger, is the one who comes off as the moron in this story. He was absolutely right. What a stupid shitty song to sing in front of the Queen.
| by Anonymous | reply 81 | March 4, 2018 6:01 PM |
It just goes to show how subjective music is. I love Dan Fogelberg. One man’s trash, another man’s treasure. I know “Longer” is garbage but I can telp but love it.
| by Anonymous | reply 82 | March 4, 2018 9:21 PM |
Do you love Karen Carpenter, Bread, ONJ, and "Afternoon Delight" as well, R82?
| by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 4, 2018 9:23 PM |
I like ONJ because not all of her music was as dull as her mid 70s phase.
| by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 4, 2018 9:50 PM |
God, there are some horrendous songs listed here. Don’t forget “You Light Up My Life”. Actually, keep doing your best to forget it.

I HATE "Ring My Bell" ! by Anita Ward
| by Anonymous | reply 88 | March 4, 2018 10:16 PM |
Well, R87, no surprise there, a Dan Fogelberg fan liking ONJ and Bread.
| by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 4, 2018 10:23 PM |
r89 - does it all need to be so high brow and precious? No room for guilty pleasures? Just all Velvet Underground, Tribe Called Quest, Kendrick Lamar, Rolling Stones and Aretha all the time? Get over yourself, you judgmental prig.

"I like ONJ because not all of her music was as dull as her mid 70s phase."
I must be really dull, then because her mid-1970s material contains my four fave ONJ songs:
1974 - "If You Love Me Let Me Know"
1974 - "I Honestly Love You"
1975 - "Have You Never Been Mellow"
1975 - "Please Mr. Please"

There are three songs from the 1980s I hate so much yet they were three of the most popular songs of the decade:
"Karma Chameleon" - Culture Club - It's ironic because I love CC and all their songs, except this one.
"Every Breath You Take" - The Police - I can listen to almost any Police song except this one.
"Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor

Any dance song where they shout out the names of cities, whether it be Lionel Ritchie or Huey Lewis, or you name it. Far worse than "we built this city," which at least has a catchy tune.

#1 = Taylor Dayne's, "I'll Always Love You" ... the most clawing song EVER written. Every. Single. Lyric is trite, overused, cliched and unoriginal.
I'll Always Love You Taylor Dayne I'll always love you For the rest of my days You have won my heart and my soul With your sweet, sexy ways You gave me hope When I needed someone near You bring me happiness Everyday of every year And I'll always love you For all that you are You have made my life complete You're my lucky star Your are the one That I'd been searching for You are my everything Tell me who could ask for more And I'll always love you Honey, this will never end I need you by my side, baby You're my lover my friend Oh, my friend You gave my world A thrill I've never known And filled my eager heart With a love to call my own And I'll always love you You must know how much I do You can count on me forever And I will take good care Of you I'll always love you I'm so happy that your mine I always love you Till the end of time

R168, those insipid lyrics sold for 1.2M at auction a few years ago. I'm sure you'll say there's no accounting for taste but I thought McClean was a master at thinly veiled references throughout the song and that's why it has stood the test of time. It's a time capsule of sorts and encompasses a time of innocence before "the music died..."

[quote]As I get older bad songs from the past seem like fun nostalgia, but eye of the tiger is still a dreadful song.
My son was in high school band a few years after "Eye of the Tiger" was popular, and when the band was rehearsing the song for an upcoming halftime performance, the teacher (accidentally?) referred to it not once, but TWICE, as "Eye of the N****r." No one ever said anything about it, so he never got in any trouble. It really is a terrible song, but ever since I heard about the "new" name, that's all I can think of every time I hear it.

There were a lot of bad songs in the '70s, true. These days, everything bad sounds so much like everything else that's bad, it is impossible to distinguish one song from another. Hence, few mentions.

I don't listen to Sondheim, r284, but I did stop listening to most popular music sometime in the 1980s. I picked up classical. But starting in 1999 or so, popular music started becoming a whole new kind of horrible. | by Anonymous | reply 300 | March 11, 2019 6:25 PM |
R300, the seventies was a super decade for classic rock: Stones, Who, Led Zep, etc.
The cool thing was that pop radio stations played rock, soul, and pop itself. You always had hits by Al Green, but John Denver and Neil Diamond too.
Mixed in with all that was always a bunch of stupid songs like "Playground in My Mind."

Also, let's face it, MTV (1980?) has ruined pop music.
Pop music became a visual medium i.e. performers needed to be attractive more than they needed to be talented.
I mean, would Britney Spears have a career is she only relied on the radio?
On the other hand, lots of folks LOVE 80s pop, so .....I have just utterly contradicted myself!

'The Windmills of Your Mind' is deeply stupid without any of the charm of 'Macarthur Park'.

I remember a line from some old TV variety show (Carol Burnett? Sonny & Cher?) One of the characters says something, and the reply is, "You've got cobwebs in the windmills of your mind."

I stopped listening to radio sometime in the late ‘60s, after FM became so formulaic. I listened to WNEW and WABC FM in 1967, having listened to WABC AM for a number of years.
FM radio was originally positioned to save us from AM. Instead, it became AM.

R311 Aren't those lyrics by that old couple who wrote a lot of songs for Streisand? They over-rhyme the shit out of everything.

Yes, but I definitely heard "cobwebs" somewhere—Sonny & Cher? Laugh-In? The song was immediately mocked right after its release.

R317, speaking of Carol Burnett Show song parodies, there was a really funny one where Harvey Korman spoofed "Having My Baby."
I am unable to find it, but I remember it had a line something like, "A whole lot of lovin', cause there's something in the oven..."
It was hysterical.
