On my third attempt, I had 4 of 5 letters in their correct positions. Easy-peasy, I thought as the all green letters dropped.
But, the order in which I guessed them left me with at least 7 words to pick from, any one of them having the possibility of being correct. I hate when that happens.

r20 so far the NYT has not changed answers from the original. I tracked along with some of the words from that NYPost leak posted in the previous thread.
And given today's answer, it's clear the NYT didn't adjust the words, at least not yet.

WTF? I had to delete my cookies to finally get it right at Wordle (fourth try after I deleted my cookies on the fifth try, because I don't associate the word with the American English language. On the other hand, I got Queerdle on my second try (first try I had the last letter right).

I was lucky to get it on the 4th row because the two possibilities I had lined up after row 2 were wrong but at least row 3 steered me in the right direction. The creator is British and now I’m wondering if there will be “British” spelling of words vs US. Bad example but you get the idea: tyres vs tires.

I did it in two but it was 90% lucky guess, 10% reason. I have settled on a strategy that eliminates the most common vowel in my first two guesses and a I just printed a cheat sheet of consonant blends. I am determined never to land it in less than three going forward.

People are constantly insisting that it’s easy when they guess correctly in two or three tries, but I’ve found that most of it has to do with what you choose for your first two words. Much of the game is simply luck.

Absolutely, R99. I got it in two today just by using one of my list of starter words. I've gone to 5 or 6 inputting words that used green or yellow letters and fit, but were too much like the winning word. Luck is a component of it, unless you're temperamentally suited to treating it like cryptography. I lack the patience (and then moan about how long it takes or broken streaks.)

I suppose it would look like luck if one’s strategy is just to type in random words until you accidentally got one right. Kind of like randomly moving chess pieces around the board and hoping for the best.
I use the same starting word every day. It has three vowels and two frequently used consonants. My strategy for the second word is always the same. If I get one or no correct vowels on word one, I use one or both of the remaining two vowels in word two. I reuse all green and yellow letters from word one, and I try to form a word that adds in S, N, and/or H, which happen to be the next most frequent consonants after the two I used in word one, and sometimes I throw in a less frequent consonant. Applying that, see below.

The yellow letter in word two couldn’t be in position three and five, since there are green letters there, and it couldn’t be in position four, because there are no common words ending in those three letters. Therefor the yellow letter is definitely in position one. So after two words, I know three letters in the correct position for sure, one, three and five. Thinking of common English words, there are only two words it could be for the third word. Both of them use a low frequency letter. However, the word I chose, which was the correct word, seemed more common than the alternative. So yes, I could have chosen the alternative word, but that still would given me the answer in four attempts instead of three.

So I figured gotta be Ndy - so came up with handy. Didn’t work but the a was in the right place.

Got it in four tries today. Finally switched to Difficult Mode…was basically doing it anyway…and discovered that if you plug in a word but forget to include all the “discovered” letters, it rejects the word. So that was helpful because I got three hits in the first row but I was entering words that didn’t have all of them.

For fun you should try Worldle. It shows you the shape of a country and you have to get it in six guesses or less. It tells you how close you are by km distance between your guess’ capital and the answer’s capital. It’s not for the geographically challenged. Yesterday, the answer was Diego Garcia, a tiny boot shaped atoll in the Indian Ocean with a population of 4,000.

I’ve correctly placed 4 out of 5 letters on the second attempt. I then completely waste my 3rd attempt by guessing the wrong 5th letter, but solve the puzzle on the 4th try.

I'm usually four, three if the stars align, which doesn't happen a lot. But I'm impatient. I think others think it through with more tenacity. I just tend to pound in words but am getting a bit better at sequencing in letters I capture. My original strategy was these three words, process of elimination, group for the fourth.

When the NYTimes took over the game, they did NOT change the list of solutions being used in current and future games. It is no more or less challenging than it was before. Save for a few objectionable words that were already discussed, all are the same.
I know this because I periodically check the leaked list from that NYPost article from a month ago (always careful not to read beyond the most recent game, because I don't like spoilers).

The game would be easier to work with (not easier to solve) if the keyboard were in alphabetical order. Also, if individual letters could be inserted where you want to try them instead of having to type a whole word just to see how a letter looks in a place, and then back out the whole thing to try again.

On Dordle (double Wordle) I am now going to go with three different starter words for row 1,2, and 3 so finishing on row 4 is pretty much guaranteed. This website helped me form words with the most common letters.

No. Knowing which letters are wrong is just as important as knowing which ones are right. I recently had no letters right on the first word and got the right word in three.The combination of knowing the excluded and included letters are what narrow down the choices to just a remaining few.

I’ve solved Wordle in as little as 5-8 minutes, and have spent over a half hour when I can’t get myself out of a boxed thinking pattern. Generally, I believe I usually solve the puzzle in 10-20 minutes, although I’ve never kept track of the exact time.
The vast majority of my guesses are completed in 4 attempts (27 out of 47), followed by 3 attempts (9 of 47), and one in two attempts, with the rest in 5 and 6 guesses. I don’t make the claim of being uber smart.

I’d say 10 minutes, max. I always use the same first word. Finding the second word probably takes me the longest. I try to find a word that uses the correct letters from word one, plus as many remaining high frequency letters as I can get into it. That usually sets me up to get the right word on the third try and certainly by the fourth.

It takes me up to five minutes to solve Wordle. I am not "uber smart" by any means. Some things are just easier for me to solve than others.

I don’t think you necessarily need a good vocabulary. Most of the words are in common use and well-known. As mentioned just now and earlier, logical, analytical and deductive skills are the most important. And, of course, determination.

And, sometimes, just plain luck. Personally - and I've never been terribly competitive - I just play the game to solve the puzzle. I don't overly care if it's in two or five, but that's just my nature, so I tend to plow through quite quickly... lack the patience to reason it through though I understand the satisfaction of that. Overall, I find I solve it in four most of the time, followed by five.

R364... later will you share your first word? Sounds like a powerhouse! I never know whether to start with as many vowels as possible or blend most common vowels and most common consonants.
Was doing OK today but came to a fork in the road and naturally took what turned out to be the long route.

Some people here have explicitly stated that they don’t want to do any thinking, analysis or strategy when playing the game. They say they just type in various words and hope for good luck. That approach is more likely to keep someone from successfully completing the game than one that has some thought put into it.

My stat distribution seems so weird. I’ve solved 50% of the Wordles I’ve attempted in 4 tries, 26% in 5 tries, 14% in 3, 6% in 2, and 4% in 6. Since I always choose a random starter word, it seems like there shouldn’t be a clear pattern.
