Arena is Spanish for sand, stadiums have grass, I thought that's the difference, but I'm not sure

An arena is enclosed while a stadium is open-air.

I was going to say I'm amazed by DLers who don't know the difference but then I looked at the title of the article.

You don't have to follow sports to know that football & baseball are played in stadiums and basketball & hockey are played in arenas.

Arenas are for hockey and basketball since they are enclosed. Stadiums are for most other sports, and can be either open or enclosed.
