Will Austin Butler Get The Oscar?

Writer Andrew Hansen

There seems to be a lot of hype over Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. It got a 12 minute standing ovation at Cannes, reducing Austin Butler to tears. I smell Oscar gold for him. What do you think?

Umm, no, Austin's PR shill, he will not.

by Anonymousreply 1May 29, 2022 3:14 AM

From what I've seen the movie is so overdone, but then it's Baz Lurmann.

by Anonymousreply 2May 29, 2022 3:16 AM

It's been rated 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Good reviews so far.

by Anonymousreply 3May 29, 2022 3:30 AM

Why would anyone bother shilling an Elvis film on Datalounge, R1? It's hardly the right demographic.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2022 3:33 AM

I hope he gets nominated, op.

by Anonymousreply 5May 30, 2022 1:07 AM

Please post the Austin crying video.

Or at least an article.

by Anonymousreply 6May 30, 2022 1:40 AM

[quote] Why would anyone bother shilling an Elvis film on Datalounge, [R1]? It's hardly the right demographic.

Sure, dear. Austin Butler and his dick sucking lips... the wrong demographic for Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 7May 30, 2022 1:44 AM

Hardly. They threw Rami Malek a bone and now people think every actor playing a music industry legend is automatically going to win an Oscar. It didn’t work for Taron Egerton, nor Jennifer Hudson, and it won’t work for Austin Butler. Plus, the Academy tends to dislike Baz and his self-serving extravagance.

[quote]Why would anyone bother shilling an Elvis film on Datalounge, [R1]? It's hardly the right demographic.

Because it's a major upcoming film? Anyway Luhrmann has directed some pretty gay films, even if he's married to a woman, and chaired the Met Gala and made documentary films about fashion designers and Chanel No. 5. He's not exactly Clint Eastwood.

by Anonymousreply 9May 30, 2022 2:07 AM

R8, aren't you forgetting Reese and Jamie Foxx?- just off the top of my head.

by Anonymousreply 10May 30, 2022 2:18 AM

R10 those weren’t today’s breed of big flashy music biopic meant to sell records and cement an artist’s legacy. Maybe “Ray” was closer to that, but it still had some artistic merit, and it was a different time. Reese was supporting, can’t compare. Movies like Elvis, Rocket Man and Bohemian Rhapsody are basically jukebox musicals with convincing mimicry designed for maximum GP entertainment, not arthouse films telling nuanced stories.

by Anonymousreply 11May 30, 2022 2:23 AM

R11 What's GP entertainment?

by Anonymousreply 12May 30, 2022 2:24 AM

[quote] Reese was supporting, can’t compare.

Reese won for Best Actress in 2005, not Best Supporting Actress.

This movie should've been a Christmas Release - better for box office and Oscar chances

by Anonymousreply 14May 30, 2022 2:27 AM

R11, Have you seen the Elvis movie yet?

by Anonymousreply 15May 30, 2022 2:29 AM

R12 general public.

R13 yes, but she was essentially supporting Joaquin Phoenix, it wasn’t the June Carter Cash story.

by Anonymousreply 17May 30, 2022 2:32 AM

An Oscar?

I suspect he is already on his way to the obscure location where that guy who played Young Hans Solo and the other guy who played John Carter now reside.

by Anonymousreply 18May 30, 2022 2:33 AM

Han Solo, I know that and I haven't seen a Star Wars movie since the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 19May 30, 2022 2:40 AM

Me too, R5.

Screw the miserable bitches in this thread. This film looks phenomenal and I think, from what I've seen so far, AB did a sublime job of playing Elvis.

by Anonymousreply 20May 30, 2022 3:24 AM

He looks like Napoleon Dynamite. Anyone else see it?

by Anonymousreply 21May 30, 2022 3:27 AM

R21, I, myself, do not but you could be right.

by Anonymousreply 22May 30, 2022 4:43 AM

He is going to win the Golden Globe for sure, and be nominated for an Oscar, but will probably lose to an older ugly person.

by Anonymousreply 23May 30, 2022 4:55 AM

Was very surprised to read how Denzel Washington, unsolicited, reached out to Baz Luhrmann to sing Butler's praises. If Washington thinks he's good there has to be something to him.

by Anonymousreply 24May 30, 2022 5:10 AM

Meanwhile Tom Hanks will pick up Oscar #3 for his supporting role as Colonel Parker.

I saw the trailer in a theater last week; for some reason Elvis bios really have staying power.

by Anonymousreply 25May 30, 2022 5:40 AM

Man this is going to be so freaking good. I’m not watching any more previews I’m just going to go watch it on the day it comes out.

by Anonymousreply 26May 30, 2022 5:48 AM

There's about 9 months until the Academy Awards. Let's see if anyone's talking about him in November

by Anonymousreply 28May 30, 2022 7:08 AM

" I smell Oscar gold for him."

And I smell Oscar Goldman on Steve Austin!

Thank god for my bionic vibrator.

by Anonymousreply 29May 30, 2022 11:30 AM

Since no one else has said it (or maybe they have), I don't think AB looks anything like Elvis.

How could this grow up to be Elvis? Maybe he could grow up to be Jonathan Taylor Thomas, but not Elvis. Elvis was much handsomer and had an 'old' face even as a kid.

I don't think they could do a biography of a young Judy Garland these days, though, because there wouldn't be minorities in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and it wouldn't be able to qualify for Academy Awrds.

by Anonymousreply 31May 30, 2022 6:04 PM

The only chance he has at an Oscar is if he turns black.

by Anonymousreply 32May 30, 2022 7:01 PM

R24 “If Washington thinks he's good there has to be something to him.”

Why?

by Anonymousreply 33May 31, 2022 4:24 AM

Meh - I feel like we've had enough Elvis tributes. I've seen the preview of this film many times - if it weren't for Tom Hanks, I doubt it would have been made.

Austin Butler didn't seem very compelling in the previews - but of course that's a short period to make any assessment.

I dunno - Elvis is special for a certain generation, but they're getting old. He was just OK - he's one of those people where I never understood his massive appeal.

by Anonymousreply 34May 31, 2022 4:30 AM

Baz is hit or miss with me; I loathed Moulin Rouge! but loved The Great Gatsby. This certainly looks spectacular, but I'm not expecting a deep dive in the person that was Elvis Presley.

by Anonymousreply 35May 31, 2022 4:49 AM

It just doesn’t seem interesting. I like some Elvis songs a lot of the people who found him so amazing are mostly dead.

by Anonymousreply 36May 31, 2022 5:14 AM

[quote] "From what I've seen the movie is so overdone, but then it's Baz Lurmann."

It's definitely a style that worked well for "Moulin Rouge!", but not as well for others. As a costumer, I should be driven to see these films. But this one doesn't interest me. I haven't been interested in a Luhrmann film since "Moulin Rouge!".

by Anonymousreply 37May 31, 2022 5:22 AM

He doesn’t look like elvis.

by Anonymousreply 39May 31, 2022 6:12 AM

No I doubt this will even be nominated. It’s releasing too early the Oscar’s were 2 months ago. This will be forgotten about come next Oscar season

by Anonymousreply 40May 31, 2022 6:42 AM

This looks like some campy shit. The trailer is so bad.

by Anonymousreply 41May 31, 2022 6:44 AM

Were Elvis's lips ugly or sexy?

by Anonymousreply 42May 31, 2022 6:50 AM

For some odd reason, the elevator's news screen in my office building features critical blurbs -- from the Hollywood Reporter or Variety, I think -- for movies and TV shows, and this morning it was Elvis: it went something like "Butler is good but his performance is smothered under the worst Bohemian Rhapsody tropes."

by Anonymousreply 43May 31, 2022 2:05 PM

Apparently, he is still using his Elvis voice, and people are mocking him for it.

r44 We're in for a Lady Gaga type Oscar campaign from him, you can just tell. He's already claimed he had to be hospitalised after filming ended.

If Butler wins, Chalamet will implode.

by Anonymousreply 47May 31, 2022 7:09 PM

Perhaps if Napoleon Dynamite's kid sister was an Elvis drag king, yes.

by Anonymousreply 48May 31, 2022 7:10 PM

Baz is Oscar poison. Goddamn weirdo!

He never could play the game, and it shows.

by Anonymousreply 49May 31, 2022 7:18 PM

He's no Kurt Russell, but I wish him well.

I'm so over this thirsty horse-faced Elvis-impersonator.

by Anonymousreply 52June 1, 2022 1:00 AM

looks like a bad made-4-tv movie

by Anonymousreply 53June 1, 2022 1:23 AM

R44 that was the laugh of the day! Why is he doing that it’s so odd. I assume he won’t be in many more films after this. He can’t even get out of character

by Anonymousreply 54June 1, 2022 4:38 AM

[quote] Was very surprised to read how Denzel Washington, unsolicited, reached out to Baz Luhrmann to sing Butler's praises. If Washington thinks he's good there has to be something to him.

Interesting. Washington is certainly not known to be generous with his praise.

by Anonymousreply 55June 1, 2022 5:52 AM

Maybe Denzel wanted that tight, pink hole.

by Anonymousreply 56June 1, 2022 6:15 AM

This guy is not attractive. And was only good getting his ass kicked by pitt in once upon a time in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 58June 1, 2022 6:41 AM

[quote] Maybe Denzel wanted that tight, pink hole.

If he did I don't doubt he got it.

by Anonymousreply 59June 17, 2022 5:23 PM

R56 it ain't tight anymore son

by Anonymousreply 60June 17, 2022 6:37 PM

Apparently, Austin contacted Rami Malek before shooting ELVIS:

I don't think he looks like Elvis and I don't think he would have been a sensation in the 50s with that face. But good luck to him.

by Anonymousreply 62July 8, 2022 7:50 PM

It was a really good performance. He should at least get nominated.

by Anonymousreply 63July 14, 2022 4:03 PM

Butler looks more like Elvis than Rami looked liked Mercury, which was hardly at all.

by Anonymousreply 65July 14, 2022 7:17 PM

I had a crown once.

It was my baby's head. Comin' outta my pussy. Durin' my abortion!
