There must be something about him that makes him worthy of being a global star. Hollywood sees it. The public at large sees it. Even the incomparable Zendaya, who TRULY has star quality, sees it. But I don't see it. What I see is a plain, pasty, short white guy, albeit one with nice lips. But mostly, I see a short dude who no one would not be given a second look if one were to pass him on the street.

So what is the appeal?

In my opinion, he is an excellent actor, very charismatic and charming, with a cute/handsome face and a great body -- if you like that kind of lean, ripped body, which I definitely do (and apparently, so do a lot of other people).

He gave a truly excellent kid performance in The Impossible, and he's a charming enough Peter Parker. I think he's pretty good in The Lost City of Z as well, which is an underappreciated picture. He's clearly very hard-working and professional and personable which, once he had that respect from The Impossible, made the slide into big-budget studio shit easy enough and he's been coasting on that ever since. I'm not convinced he can translate to truly adult stuff -- Cherry was real bad -- but there are far more offensive and egregious stars

He had three high profile projects within about a year that were all supposed to redefine him as an actor and he was prominently featured, basically carrying the films. They all three crashed and burned, though none were really a result of his performance, yet his presence didn’t carry them to a larger audience. Either way that could be perceived as box office poison outside the Marvel Universe and it will be interesting to see if he’s given high profile projects or slides more into supporting roles. In the meantime who’s up for a revival of Equus?

I remember seeing him in The Impossible back in 2012 and thinking he totally stole them movie from Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. The talent was pretty apparent IMO.

That new GQ profile is a bit of a tough read. Being Spider-man sounds fairly miserable; all he does is work.

Also, the clock is ticking for him to find a decent non-Marvel project after The Devil All the Time, Cherry, and Chaos Walking bombed.

Tom Holland is not a star and has not carried a movie successfully outside of Spider-Man. He gets attention and publicity because he is a Willing Whore™️ and that is a valued commodity in the PR game.
