Gay men don't like gay singers/celebrities in general, seeing how pretty much all gay icons are straight women, even ones who are openly homophobic like Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks, and how the community drops pretty much all interest in a man once he finally comes out (Colton Haynes being the most recent example and probably Shawn Mendes in the future). And places like DL, atrl, gay twitter, and the gayer parts of reddit are quick to shred a gay celeb to pieces if they say dumb shit but ignore or giggle along when one of their preferred pop divas say dumb shit. And like R25 said, most gay male singers' fanbases are overwhelmingly straight women, whether they ever presented themselves as a heartthrob or not. At best gay guys will say how hot George and Ricky were but even gay guys from their respective regions would rather stan Kylie Minogue/Dua Lipa and Gloria Trevi/Anitta.
I'm curious about the phenomenon in the present day setting. The older gay icons I get since they were largely supportive of gay men when the general population wasn't, but these days every other celeb and their mother speaks how they just love gays and Troye Sivan has songs explicitly about gay relationships and gay sex but his fanbase sure as hell isn't gay men. Jealousy of a gay celebrity being successful and rich and fucking hotter men? Projecting their self loathing onto gay celebrities? Painful reminders of their own closeting (if the celebrity was ever closeted)? Wishing they could strut and flounce around like a woman? Identifying with women in general?

R40 perhaps my heart is half-dead and cold, but I’ve never liked ‘Your Song’. To my ears, it’s just congealing treacle.
Also, my closeted cousin serenaded his beard with it acoustically at their wedding, so I think the cringe of that has sunk the song further down in my estimations.
Do enjoy some of Elton/Bernie’s work, though. ‘Bennie & The Jets’ is an undeniable banger, full of creative verve and confidence, probably my favourite of the big hits. ‘Grey Seal’ and ‘Madman Across The Water’ are his best of the less popular cuts, imo.

His soundtrack for the animated Dreamworks film THE ROAD TO EL DORADO gets my respect. A very sensitive, wry, heartfelt and fun set of songs. Way better than that overcooked dreck for THE LION KING (which he didn’t actually do as much for as people assume).
‘Friends Never Say Goodbye’ makes me well up a bit, even during its scene in the movie. A really sad, sweet song about what it’s like to go seperate ways with someone who you still love but know you have to release if you’re ever to have a life you need.
Interestingly, THE ROAD TO EL DORADO was originally planned and pitched as a movie about two bisexual guys, rather than the straight buddy movie we got...

In his defense, the oppressive British conservatism of his youth combined with his awful abusive mother and homophobic father has indeed left Elton a broken and possibly self loathing person. The adulation of fame and wealth on a person with low self esteem turned him into a spoilt petulant child. He turned to drugs, booze, sex, shopping etc. to cope with low self esteem. As he has said, 'behind every creative person is a monster' and I'd have to agree, but that's no excuse.
He's very talented and very conflicted. He can be giving and cruel. He's open about all this which suggests he has some self awareness. Yes, he's a star fucker, but coming from the working class background he has, it would be impossible not to be. Sometimes I think he might possibly be on the bipolar spectrum; depression, outbursts of severe anger, heightened creativity, addiction, reckless spending. His mother had the same anger issues.

A few years ago I saw a picture of him on his yacht in the Mediterranean, he was there with Lady Furnish, their new baby ( apparently there was a surrogate in london waiting to drop no 2) and the Neil Patrick Harris his husband and two kids. I thought, “ we’ll there you go, two families on vacation. It s like I always say, the only difference between gay parents and straight parents is… there is no difference. What could be more wholesome. Flash forward a few weeks, the Harris Burrka family is gone, the baby is back in london and Elton and Furnish have populated the boat with gay porn stars. I lost all respect for Elton. No, no and no. Im sorry. You are fathers now. You are fathers now. You belong at home with your child not partying with call boys in the south of France. If you are going to be parents then those days are over. I’ve had nothing but disgust for him since then.
