Why does Oklahoma have so many lesbian bars?

Writer Christopher Lucas

In one of America’s reddest states lies a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. Despite passing several anti-LGBTQ+ laws, Oklahoma has become a hot spot for one of the community’s rarest spaces: lesbian bars.

Out of a little more than 30 lesbian bars in the United States, Oklahoma is home to four. In this week’s Stay Tuned, we go inside some of these bars and talk to the people who have made Oklahoma City home.

Because who has the balls to say anything to those bull dykes? Good for them.

So if lesbian bars are closing in major cities, why are they thriving in Oklahoma?

This is indeed a strange phenomenon.

Very strange. Almost bizarre…

I saw Amy Sedaris in the Lickety Split bar there once.

If gay men have the most gay bars in too cool for school NY and California, of course lesbians do the inverse of that and choose the uncoolest state.

Cuz it's probably inexpensive retail space in OK and there's not much else to do there?

The one with the all grey tile bar and pink neon ‘I’m a Vagitarian’ sign is a design disaster. Obviously no gay man helped with the design.

Queer Eye for the Lesbian Bar: "Even for Oklahoma, this is catastrophic! Did you never think of surrey tables with cute fringes on top? Or rustic Grapes of Wrath chic? Let's get creative, girls, and give this dump a facelift!"

OKC used to have a thriving gay compound/district/area whatever you want to call it, where you could go from the gay bars and dance clubs to the sex places (boothstores back then) to the gay hotel all in walking distance. That's over 20 years ago when I visited though. Does that area still exist? Are our lesbian sistern part of that?
