When did Chadwick Boseman become James Dean?

Writer Robert Guerrero

I'm sorry the guy died and all, but seriously? The reverence seems a little over the top.

by Anonymousreply 24March 21, 2021 11:57 PM

Actually the reverence is far more justified than it was after Dean died.

by Anonymousreply 1March 21, 2021 1:57 AM

It’s not over the top. Dead celebrities always become super special.

Chadwick died young and attractive. And technically, he had a more fulfilled career than James Dean. Boseman had 42, Marshall, Get On Up, Black Panther and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. So he certainly earned his iconic status imho.

He was Black Panther, which made him a household name all over the world.

James Dean would have faded if he didn’t die.

He was also a nice person that knew he was going through cancer while filming Black Panther and the Avengers but never complained or burdens the crew or cast with his issues. As far as actor’s go he is a testament to professionalism. He also inspired so many people of color with his BP character. So no, it’s not over the top. He was kind and gave of his time. He also peaked close to his 40, though I thought he wa in his early 30s. So idk, I give him a lot of credit for the positive mark he left.

Black Panther was one of the biggest films of the last 10 years, it was a cultural moment and made Boseman a huge star. It's shocking that only a few years later he would be dead.

by Anonymousreply 7March 21, 2021 2:06 AM

James Dean only made 3 movies

by Anonymousreply 8March 21, 2021 2:14 AM

Boseman was at the height of his success when he died. I was surprised to hear he was 43, I assumed he was about 35.

by Anonymousreply 9March 21, 2021 2:28 AM

This wouldn't bother you if he'd been white, OP.

by Anonymousreply 10March 21, 2021 2:28 AM

This is a tough one. I can figure out how to spin it that I've suffered more than Chadwick and deserve the Ma Rainey vote more than he does.

by Anonymousreply 11March 21, 2021 3:24 AM

He seemed well liked by casts and crews that worked with him and he was obviously talented. It's still rare to see a man of color get the opportunities that he got. He was an inspiration to black actors.

by Anonymousreply 12March 21, 2021 3:41 AM

Was he the dude that died in the helicopter crash?

by Anonymousreply 13March 21, 2021 3:47 AM

I died of cancer in my 40s, too.

by Anonymousreply 14March 21, 2021 3:48 AM

[quote] going through cancer while filming Black Panther and the Avengers but never complained

I’ve never understood the line of thinking that suggests that ‘complaining’ (talking?) about a terminal illness would make you a bad person.

by Anonymousreply 15March 21, 2021 3:55 AM

As others have said Chadwick Boseman was much bigger movie star than Dean was.

by Anonymousreply 16March 21, 2021 4:01 AM

nah r16.

They were about equal.

Dean was worshipped back in the day. There are plays and movies written about him and his death (Come Back to the 5 and Dime Jimmy Dean etc; also a movie with Richard Thomas.)

Bosman really was just a star because of how big Black Panther was. Prior to that he was just a working actor and not that well known.

by Anonymousreply 17March 21, 2021 4:04 AM

I though Paul Walker was James Dean?

by Anonymousreply 19March 21, 2021 3:47 PM

R15 it doesn’t make you a bad person but in a way it’s commendable, as his choice, because it would have districted from everything else. Instead he did what Marvel and the studio wanted in a hero actor, just be a hero. We know how whinny actors can be, I’m commending him for not being stuck up and being a professional.

by Anonymousreply 20March 21, 2021 6:33 PM

R20. Someone mention “whinny actors”?

by Anonymousreply 21March 21, 2021 6:35 PM

[quote] As far as actor’s go

Oh, fucking dear!

Who told you to add an apostrophe to make a plural?

by Anonymousreply 22March 21, 2021 6:39 PM

I think Boseman had a better filmography before his death than James Dean. If Boseman lived, he would have had the career of Jeffrey Wright, Laurence Fishburne or Denzel Washington with all the acclaimed roles he racked up before and after Black Panther. James Dean mostly did TV work and didn't get his big break until East of Eden. But his death by a car accident and his role in Rebel Without A Cause is what made him an iconic figure. Not only for his good looks, red jacket and rebellious image but also being part of the "method acting" movement along with Brando. Still, It's very hard to say how Dean's film career could have played out had he lived.

People worship celebrities op, they are the pagan gods of our times as sad as that is. So when one dies the heretics kick in. Plus he was in a huge cultural movie like black panther too...
