Does "Polari" roughly translate to "exhausting"?

by Anonymousreply 2December 9, 2022 5:39 PM

I think Dodge used to make 'em.

by Anonymousreply 4December 9, 2022 5:48 PM

Polari is part of gay history and most gay people I know in real life are familiar with it. Of course supposed "gays" on DL have never heard of it and instantly mock it out of ignorance.

by Anonymousreply 5December 9, 2022 6:11 PM

Not sure why they are using s picture of a Black man when talking about Polari, a slang invented by gay white Englishmen.

Actually, I DO know why, but still…

by Anonymousreply 6December 9, 2022 6:15 PM

Gay history. But of course they have to show a man wearing women's clothing and make-up.

That's how we're represented today. Just as swishy "fairies" represented gay men decades ago.

Ah progress!

Ugh I despise when they use the term “queer” to describe gay and lesbian history. It just makes the purple hairs feel like it was something they were a part of or had a hand in.

by Anonymousreply 8December 9, 2022 6:25 PM

I always thought trade meant for sale not “attractive”.

I remember those commercials in the early 70s, didn’t it have something to do with fine Corinthian leather?

by Anonymousreply 10December 9, 2022 6:42 PM

How do you say, “stop using queer” in Polari?

by Anonymousreply 11December 9, 2022 6:50 PM

Every time we vardas a dolly basket, we go meshigener for cottaging!

More Polari. A better link.

The examples shown above are all white cis gay men, but OP's article picture would have us believe a very different group were responsible for this cultural trend.

No! It's VOLARE!

Stop appropriating! MINE!

Fascinating - I learned about this in the 90s, I think, after Boy George talked about it in his book.

British fag slang from 50+ years ago. No one in that country speaks it anymore, and no one on this side of the Atlantic ever did.

But the boys at the Gayish Podcast used to have a Polari word of the week.

by Anonymousreply 22December 9, 2022 8:46 PM

Read the article.

"Commonly used words like ‘troll’ (meaning someone unpleasant or unattractive) were popularised by Polari, meanwhile ‘trade’ a word used on the reality show ‘Rupaul's Drag Race’ denotes someone attractive. ‘Drag’ itself and the yiddish word ‘zhooshed’ also strike the chime of recognition for most people."

Because they mention RuPaul's drag race, they put a black queen in the centre photo.

Pathetic.

Why is cultural appropriation always so one-sided now?

by Anonymousreply 24December 9, 2022 9:21 PM

It follows the gender appropriation that we are all forced to like and champion!
