What bed and mattress do you have?

Writer Daniel Martin

What do you recommend? I need a new bed, and also a new mattress.

Tempurpedic and it has changed my life. Expensive but worth it.

I'm assuming you can write it off as a business expense, OP.

Awara. It's organic, non-toxic, and state of the art with hundreds of latex coils supporting every pressure point on my body. Not cheap, but I'm in love with my bed.

Simmons Beauty rest. It’s a model used in hotels, very comfortable and durable. The same mattress is called different names and sold through different vendors to complicate comparison shopping. I learned that you need to go by the mattress specifications when buying. My Brother and our Mom have the same mattress, but it’s called different names by different stores (Macy’s called it one name like “Berkshire”, though I can’t recall the name under which I purchased mine in upstate NY).

My place in NYC has a mattress called King’s Down (?), said to be a good quality mattress that was very reasonable because the manufacturer spends no money on advertising (at least that’s what was told to me when I purchased the mattress on 23rd street).

I’m told that some earlier foam mattresses trap body heat and can feel very warm in summer, and they can feel very stiff in winter. We have one in our cottage and it freezes into a hard block when the temperature drops. I think newer foam mattresses have better heat conductivity through the foam cells.

Some of the mattresses that come through the mail packed into a small, heavy box and expand when opened, are actually very comfortable. One of my employees bought one through the mail and loves it.

You can’t sleep outside on the ground for all I care, OP.

Thanks, R7. I looked at their site, along with many, many others and I'm seriously considering giving the Awara a try.

I bought a DreamCloud Deluxe last year

I was prescribed a tempurpedic bed, but forgot the prescription and kept requesting a turpitude mattress.

What does a latex mattress feel like? I envision it being like wet cement.

I've had a McRoskey mattress for years. Spendy, so I take good care of it (rotate or flip it every quarter). It still feels new and sleeps like a, um, dream. (I have McRoskey pillows as well.)
