What's your supplement stack?

Writer James Williams

As you get older, certain chemicals released by the body, such as testosterone, dopamine and choline reduce production and need to be supplemented. This is what I am most interested in, to be able to keep the body running without breakdowns. To keep my brain clean and firing on all pistons. I’m 77, 5’9”, 168 lbs, have had my 4 Moderna shots and don’t take any prescribed drugs. I don’t get sick. I do take supplements, but concentrate on the brain. Both my folks had Alzheimer’s and lived to 95. I’d like to live that long, but only with a healthy brain.

The brain is plastic to the point where it can grow or shrink. If it starts shrinking and neurons die off, your memory dies off as well. Can’t complete a thought? Your Rolodex is moving slow? Check the level of your choline. The liver can’t produce as much. I take Alpha-GPC, 300 mg per day (Swanson). If you’ve never heard of Nootropics, let’s begin. They are non-addictive, non-corrosive, and perfect for speeding up the Rolodex. I started taking Noopept, 30 mg per day (Nootropics Depot, Tempe, Arizona) and within a few days didn’t have to wait for the word I was looking for. This drug speeds up the connection of the neuronal pathways from one neuron to another.

Testosterone, for my needs is handled quite nicely by eating rib eye steaks. Don’t need a supplement.

Dopamine is the chemical made and released in the brain. You need it to bring the happy out, but as you get older… I take Mucuna Pruriens, full of Dopa, the precursor to dopamine, which is also good for sexual health. Mucuna Pruriens, 400 mg x 2 per day (Swanson)

Vitamin D3, 5,000IU per day. Also walking my dog every day for the sun to help “digest” it. BTW, Dr. Fauci takes 6,000IU per day.

CoQ10, or Ubiquitol, 200 mg per day (Swanson) for cardiovascular health. My 87 yr old next door neighbor swears by it. So do I.

Magnesium. The adult male daily value is 440 mg. Look up foods that contain magnesium, see if there are enough mgs each day. There aren’t enough I like to matter.

Bilberry, 550 mg per day (Swanson). Flavonoids are great. This one helps protect my eyes from tablet stress. Also check out Grape Seed.

L-Lysine, 500 mg per day (Swanson). This is an essential amino acid that supports collagen synthesis. Take this and you won’t get as embarrassed telling people you are 20 years younger than you are. I tell people my real age and they say, “Oh! You don’t look that old.” You might also look into Pycnogenol, my favorite supplement.

I had high blood pressure, was prescribed medication, didn’t like what it did to my body. I replaced it with L-Arginine with L-Citrulline 540/180 mg, twice per day (Swanson) which are amino acids, both work on producing Nitric Oxide, which when released expands the blood vessels and reduces pressure of blood flow.

Just remember, it’s all about the brain. If it doesn’t work, neither does your body. Keep your body in shape to keep the brain working. No fast food, no carbonated beverages, no processed meats, less salt!
