Vanessa Redgrave Finally Becomes A Dame
John Thompson
She had to wait 85 years
Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith even Elizabeth Taylor all became a Dame before Vanessa
I guess Vanessa had to wait until the Queen died until she got her "Dame" designation

Some things one cannot forgive.

Whoever heard of a Communist Dame?

Indeed, my good dowager at R2. She used to be known unofficially (ie, behind her back) as 'Red Vanessagrave'.

They’re still doing this ridiculous thing? lol

I'm kind of surprised the old commie would accept it. As an artist, she's certainly deserving, but as a person, she's a nutter

Have we evah seen her knockers like the other lah dee dah dames whom got their kits off?

It's just a way of honoring somebody's accomplishments, r4. What's ridiculous about it?

I think she has aged naturally and well--she isn't stooped over (yet) and still stands pretty tall. I believe Christopher Plummer said they used to call her "Big Van" -- now that's Dame Big Van.

How did she get so short?

Not like she's the first to kick their principles aside for a gong - see Sir Sean Connery, republican, Scottish independence supporting Knight of the British Empire.

It's just an honorific, r10. It's not like you get to pick out a piece of the Crown jewels.

She reportedly turned one down in 1999 - there's a list of those who had refused (up to 2003) at the link.

Makes sense, r12; I figured the only reason she (or any Redgrave sibling, really) hadn't gotten one was because she turned it down.

I don't think she waited per se. She turned it down many times in the past. Lots of working class actors who despised the royals when they were young ended up accepting it in their later years. People tend to lose their edge as they age I guess.

What did Vanessa do so wrong that it took this long for her to receive her damehood?
(Other than of course, wearing trousers to receive her damehood)

Vanessa Redgrave, working class actor - err.

She will be 86 in January so she certainly waited a long time before accepting one.

Vanessa is a big royal fan and she herself has turned down a damehood in the past, because it was offered by Tony Blair:
[quote]“I’m not against the royal family; they do many good things and the royal family in England is one of the red lines that can save England at certain moments,” she said. “(But) it isn’t the royal family or the queen who offers the honor, it’s the government of the day. So I would never say I refused an honor from the queen. But I could not and would not accept any honor form Mr. Blair, when he has taken our country, and so many people, to war on the basis of a lie.”

An honourable position on her part, R18. Interesting, though, that she wouldn't accept the DBE from Blair but takes it from the clapped-out Conservatives? To be fair, at 86, it may just be that she wants to ensure that she dies a Dame.
Isn't she the one who found her husband and her father in flagrante?

Long overdue, in my opinion, Vanessa Redgrave is a very fine actress.
She also bagged Franco Nero when he was young and hot and then bagged him again now. She married him this time. Good for her.

Got to meet her at the Broadway Cars Equity Fights AIDS Annual Flea Market, with her brother and her fabulous sister Lynnn. She was lovely and I have her Oscar winning "Julia" DVD signed by her.

I don't get why guys who are balding excessively don't just shave it all off. It looks so tacky and ghetto with a bit missing patch right in the center of your head.

Prince William clearly has a mighty fine ass in that photo.
Other photos have indicated that as well.

Nothing like wearing your car coat as you receive your damehood. Guess she was heading to the corner shop immediately afterward.
