"Valentine" (2001)
William Jenkins
It's that time of year—this gaudy slasher from the early aughts starred Denise Richards, David Boreanaz, and Marley Shelton, and follows a group of female professionals in San Francisco who are stalked by a killer in a cupid mask. It was unsurprisingly ripped to shreds by critics, but I have always thought it was an unabashedly fun movie with some great visuals, over-the-top murder scenes, and gorgeous cinematography. Most of the characters are raging cunts, aside from Shelton's and the goofy Jessica Cauffiel's, but they're all still somehow likable. Boreanaz is at peak sexiness here. Katherine Heigl, who gets butchered early on, infamously claimed after appearing in it that she'd "never done a horror movie before". I've always thought the opening credits sequence was exceptionally done.

It's fun, but not groundbreaking. I was very excited when Shout Factory put out a Blu-ray.
Great musical score.
And it's Boreanaz's only wide release film

It's on Tubi. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

R2 It's a lot of fun. It's not groundbreaking like Halloween or Black Christmas, but it's fun. One of the better Scream knockoffs.

Saw it in the theater when it first came out. It's campy fun

Denise Richards's death scene is great. I agree R1, the musical score is fantastic and haunting.

I always get a kick out of the scene where Marley Shelton loses water in her apartment while showering and has to rinse the shampoo out of her hair in the toilet bowl.

What happened to Jessica Cauffiel? She seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. She hasn't acted in almost 15 years. I always thought she had a bubbly, frenetic energy onscreen that was fun to watch. I'm surprised she didn't have a bigger career.

Wasn't she in one of the Chucky movies? Or maybe that was later on? 🤔

I remember it being described as a typical slasher movie meets Melrose Place, which seems pretty accurate
Denise Richards even appeared on a few episodes of Melrose Place

R9 Bride was before Valentine. And she had a much bigger part in Bride.
