I only ever lurked, and now that's not longer possible. They shut off # search weeks ago, so no more topical search, and then @ search about a week ago so you could only navigate from a link to that poster and then one of the three related ones.
With Baconreader also shut down so no more mobile Reddit, I've got so much fucking time to spare!

I feel like half the guys I see on the apps have a Twitter account and have no hesitation about posting footage of their latest hookup there like everyone cares. Or they're actively "looking for content."

600 posts are viewed very quickly, r5 . Ha ha!
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 1, 2023 7:00 PM |
In addition to being a “pay to play” tactic at Twitter itself, there are Twitter scraping sites like nitter.net and many other sites that use the nitter method to permit access to Twitter without a login. Also, tweets used to be accessible from Twitter by RSS feed, but that was stopped about 6 months ago. The nitter sites were still working with RSS, but now they are not. It appears that anything that allows access to Twitter without seeing ads is being prevented.

Is there a decent replacement for Twitter yet?
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 1, 2023 7:04 PM |
I use three different ad and tracker blockers on Twitter and I don't see ads on it. I'm shocked every time I open it that I'm allowed to use Twitter with them.
Of course since I've probably reached my limit of reading 600 posts I won't be able to read Twitter anyway.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 1, 2023 7:17 PM |
If all that's true Elon finally killed Twitter, because no sane person is paying for that shit
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 1, 2023 7:19 PM |

Dude would cut off his own dick to make a point
| by Anonymous | reply 62 | July 1, 2023 7:58 PM |
Call me a tinhat or whatever, but I think the whole point is to bring down Twitter. If I remember correctly, this Elon guy was 'forced ' into buying the platform, which is the arguably the #1 source for immediately spreading news /information around the globe. TPTB want to destroy that, making it harder to manipulate the news if thousands of people are tweeting about it in real time . The amount he supposedly paid for it is no real loss for the richest person in the world, especially if he's a right leaning demigod who thinks his shit don't stink 🦨😭The elites will reimburse him ten fold of they can destroy/manipulate the leading source of news for their sick 🤢 agenda .
| by Anonymous | reply 63 | July 1, 2023 7:59 PM |
600 posts is genuinly nothing. Any reasonably popular viral post had about 300 quote responses. You could exceed that limit in under 2 minutes if you flick through a popular account or big news reports response tweets

Even if only 5 percent of the readership believes what is posted there, that's a win for the right. They keep sowing seeds of doubt and misinformation so Dee Plorable can say, "Hillary molested kids in a pizza shop! I seen it on the Internet!"
| by Anonymous | reply 71 | July 1, 2023 8:08 PM |
No one smart or cool pays for Twitter. Elon can gtfo with that one.

These seems to be a push to get people to pay.
| by Anonymous | reply 73 | July 1, 2023 8:15 PM |
I used to browse Twitter without an account, but that all stopped on Friday. Now when someone posts a twitter link, I'm sent to to a Twitter login screen and can go no further.
Elon said that eventually users with no accounts will be able to browse again at some future date. He claims they are currently trying to deal with no account bots that are mining the site for information, and he specifically mentioned ChatGPT.
One problem with permanently banning users with no accounts:
[quote] There are some big drawbacks to Twitter's decision to block access to the platform unless a user is signed into an account. A major issue Twitter will face is the fact that search engines, like Google, will have difficulty crawling the platform and ranking its content. This means when a user searches on Google, user profiles and tweets may not appear. This will probably end up losing a lot of traffic for Twitter.

I never want to give him clicks again, but I don't want to have to check multiple sites with 10% of the traffic either.
| by Anonymous | reply 77 | July 1, 2023 9:18 PM |
R39 It's been functionally dead for a long time, unless you're a fan of far right grifters. Try searching any news topic, and you get greeted with nothing but blue checkmarks.
| by Anonymous | reply 78 | July 1, 2023 9:22 PM |
Despite all the blue check marks popping up as the topmost responses, so many of these bozos don't seem to have > 200 followers. They're not talking to others, save for a few who insult them for paying for a diminished service.
| by Anonymous | reply 79 | July 1, 2023 9:27 PM |
So let me get this straight. Unless you're "verified," you're severely limited in the number of posts you can view on Twitter each day. Which means the verified subscribers, most of them insane, far right MAGA cultists, are virtually free to tweet their BS, and those who aren't in the cult can't see those tweets or respond to them to correct the bullshit.
This is essentially Musk's attempt to make Twitter the equivalent of Truth Social. Fuck that ugly prick.
| by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 1, 2023 10:19 PM |
So his business plan is to sell advertising by limiting active users? Huh.
| by Anonymous | reply 81 | July 1, 2023 10:53 PM |
[quote] What is data scraping?
R53 Nitter copies ("scrapes") all the non-private tweets on Twitter and makes them available at alternate web addresses in the Nitter interface, which is similar to Twitter's. There is no login requirement to access Nitter sites. Nitter sites scrape Twitter every few minutes, so I presume it puts a lot of load on Twitter.
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used by certain websites to make their available information in a format that can be read/viewed on apps that read RSS feeds. Podcasts are distributed using RSS, so "Apple Podcasts" and whatever podcast app one uses are RSS "readers" for audio and video files. Twitter used to make RSS feeds available for each non-private poster, but they stopped that about 6 months ago. Nitter sites still produced RSS feeds from Twitter posts until a few days ago.
| by Anonymous | reply 82 | July 1, 2023 11:15 PM |
What's the reset period? The article says 24 hours but the popup on twitter says "wait a few moments" which would be in keeping with every other website that has a limit on how many pages you can view in a set period of time.

| by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 1, 2023 11:39 PM |
People are reporting that what's going on is that Elon fucked up, surprise surprise, and didn't pay for a bunch of servers that it needed. In effect, Twitter is doing a DDOS attack on itself, the server that it does have is trying to reach the servers it no longer pays for, and the more that the requests dont go through, the more it sends out. He supposedly barely has enough staff to try to fix the problem, therefore the solution was to termporarily limit the number of Tweets users could access, in hopes that it would slow the traffic on the servers.
| by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 1, 2023 11:41 PM |

Twitter did not renew their cloud contract with Google and they did not migrate all their apparatus before the deadline. The deadline was June 30th, yesterday.
You can’t make this shit up.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 99 | July 2, 2023 12:38 AM |
June 10 (Reuters) - Twitter has refused to pay its Google Cloud bills (GOOGL.O) as its contract comes up for renewal this month, which could result in the social media company's trust and safety teams being crippled, Platformer reported on Saturday.
Before Elon Musk's takeover of the social media platform last year, Twitter signed a multi-year contract with Google related to fighting spam and protecting accounts, among other things, the report said.
The Platformer report did not give details on how the conflict between the companies could hinder Twitter's trust and safety teams. The Information said Twitter has been trying to renegotiate its contract with Google since at least March.
Twitter hosts some services on its server and houses others on the cloud platforms of Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google, Platformer said.
In March, Amazon warned Twitter that it would withhold advertising payments because of the company's outstanding bills to Amazon Web Services for cloud computing services, according to the Information.
Since Musk's acquisition, Twitter has cut costs dramatically and laid off thousands of employees. Musk ordered the company to cut infrastructure costs, such as spending on cloud services, by $1 billion, a source had told Reuters in November.

[quote]Twitter is facing a lawsuit from Columbia Property that accused the company of failing to make payments on its lease and alleged that it owed more than $136,000 as of December. The lawsuit also alleged that Musk said he would only pay Twitter's rent "over his dead body."

| by Anonymous | reply 128 | July 2, 2023 7:10 AM |
Oh the rate limit is actually still there it just takes longer to reach it. So yeah I guess its at the level now where you actually do have to interact with the post in some way rather than just constantly ticking up every time you go down the trending page. I think I reached it after about an hour or so of just general browsing amongst other stuff.
Which leads me to the conclusion this probably isn't going to be temporary, or is at the very least a trial of if he can get away with it. Since he's spent his entire time as CEO trying to promote buying twitter blue and now that's the only way to have the old mindless twitter browsing experience because 10.000 posts would be more than the majority of people would need. DON'T BUY TWITTER BLUE!

| by Anonymous | reply 137 | July 2, 2023 6:33 PM |
It’s frustrating. There were two mass shootings at block parties last night .
| by Anonymous | reply 138 | July 2, 2023 6:34 PM |
This is going to kill twitter if allowed to go on because people need their fix and will just go elsewhere which reminds me of what is happening on DL now with the extended prime time.

As soon as you losers who already pony up 8 bucks a month open multiple new accounts and pay me accordingly, I’ll get a new Google server contract and we’ll be back in business! -with love, Elon

If I click on a trending topic, I get a “tweets won’t load” message. First had this problem eight hour ago and it persists.
Meanwhile, Linda Yaccarino can continue her advertiser listening tour and the message will be a stronger “no” than a couple days ago, and they hated the platform then.
| by Anonymous | reply 141 | July 2, 2023 6:36 PM |
6000-8000 tweets for “news”? Right. If you wanted news, you’d read the fucking Associated Press, or Reuters.

Anyone who would take a ride on his spaceX or one of his Telsa death vehicles must be suicidal. I wouldn't trust this idiot to properly assemble an office chair.

r138 - as of last evening emergency services, NWS, government offices' twitter accounts were also subject to rate restrictions.
| by Anonymous | reply 144 | July 2, 2023 6:46 PM |
I haven't been kicked off yet or hit my limit, and I've scrolled a lot last night and today
| by Anonymous | reply 145 | July 2, 2023 6:56 PM |
I deactivated my account. Fuck that fascist pos.
| by Anonymous | reply 146 | July 2, 2023 6:57 PM |
It's worth it for just the porn
| by Anonymous | reply 147 | July 2, 2023 6:59 PM |
It's been working okay for me for the past few hours when I've checked - I wonder if they realized it was a disaster? Or maybe I just haven't passed the limit
| by Anonymous | reply 148 | July 3, 2023 2:12 AM |
It’s worth it to stay on Twitter just for the porn and the political commentary. But I wouldn’t give that POS Musk a dime. He took something that was working well and destroyed it. He’s an insane reich-winger

I learned that Jack Dorsey is only on the board of Bluesky so I am on the waiting list for an invitation code. The reviews, comments from users are very positive and it doesn't appear to be RW swamp.
| by Anonymous | reply 150 | July 3, 2023 1:54 PM |
R150, I just got my invitation code and registered. Who’s on it so I can follow?
| by Anonymous | reply 151 | July 3, 2023 2:24 PM |
R151- Could you send me a code?
| by Anonymous | reply 152 | July 3, 2023 2:26 PM |
r152, I don’t think it works that way. Register at Bluesky and they’ll send you an invitation code. That’s how I got one. Since I’ve used mine, I don’t know that it will work again.
| by Anonymous | reply 153 | July 3, 2023 3:13 PM |
R158- Ok, thanks anyway. I am on the waiting list but so many people are leaving Twitter I think BlueSky is overwhelmed at the moment. Let us know what you think of it!
| by Anonymous | reply 154 | July 3, 2023 3:36 PM |
I will, r154. I even looked on my profile to see if I can generate an invitation, but I can’t, so it’s obvious Bluesky is trying to assert some control over the participants.
| by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 3, 2023 4:02 PM |
Thanks for the heads-up. I just signed up for Bluesky and am now waiting for the invitation code.

If you exceeded your limit find something else to do. You’re allowed a lot of threads. If you exceed it you’re spending too much time on the app
| by Anonymous | reply 157 | July 3, 2023 6:21 PM |
I am too pissed off and disgusted by EM to be on Twitter at all now.
| by Anonymous | reply 158 | July 3, 2023 6:24 PM |
R167, I believe it’s not threads it just posts. Can anyone confirm? It’s easy to blow through 600 posts on any board.
| by Anonymous | reply 159 | July 3, 2023 8:15 PM |
R159- It has to be posts because I reached my limit in a matter of minutes.
| by Anonymous | reply 160 | July 3, 2023 8:18 PM |
@r156, Do you think it will be any better than Twitter? I mean Jack Dorsey is running it and well his track record with Twitter isn't all that great. Not to mention he's kind of turning into a Fascist himself
| by Anonymous | reply 161 | July 3, 2023 10:55 PM |
R161- He is only a board member, I have read. People are of course questioning his power and involvement after what happened to Twitter and it is said that he holds no power over how this platform is run. Idk. 🤷♀️
| by Anonymous | reply 162 | July 3, 2023 11:33 PM |
I don’t understand the excitement about joining Bluesky. There are already good alternatives out there that aren’t run by fascist supporters.
| by Anonymous | reply 163 | July 4, 2023 12:30 PM |
Meta's Threads app will launch on Thursday. You can pre-order it now on the app store.

I agree about not wanting to join Bluesky but I think people want something the same or similar to what Twitter was. None of the alternatives have been good so far.
| by Anonymous | reply 165 | July 4, 2023 2:06 PM |
r164 unless you can post dick and bussy on that new app it's a fail
| by Anonymous | reply 166 | July 4, 2023 2:08 PM |
So far, Bluesky looks a lot like Twitter tbh. I’m sure there are differences but it feels like I’m looking right at Twitter. The big thing is of course the users. Everyone is on Twitter, whereas Bluesky is much, much smaller.
| by Anonymous | reply 167 | July 4, 2023 2:30 PM |
Which one has the most users so far?
| by Anonymous | reply 168 | July 4, 2023 2:36 PM |
BlueSky has the smallest number of users and is invite-only. Instagram has 2.35 billion monthly active users, which means Meta can win this if they can entice even a fraction of them to start using Threads regularly. This is a historic opportunity for Meta and I'm pretty sure they won't fuck it up.

r169 yeah but if their is no adult content they can forget about it
| by Anonymous | reply 170 | July 4, 2023 2:51 PM |
R167- Thank you! My problem with Meta is what Zuckerberg did to influence the 2016 election. Never forget how he allowed Cambridge Analytical to gaslight people.
| by Anonymous | reply 172 | July 4, 2023 3:00 PM |
r170 We'll see, we have to wait at least a year for these three to slug it out now. We might end up in a situation where most people do migrate over but go to Twitter for porn only, and that becomes a workable arrangement for the majority.
| by Anonymous | reply 173 | July 4, 2023 3:01 PM |

You'd think but they've pretty much failed with regard to that creepy virtual reality thing they've been trying to push (Oculus?)

I tried to warn people this was an issue - as it relates to using Twatter links here at the DL - the other day...
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 175 | July 4, 2023 3:02 PM |
r172 I find Dorsey slightly worse than Zuckerberg. Remember his "splinter the CIA, NSA, and FBI into a thousand pieces and scatter them into the winds" tweet from May? He's also endorsed RFK Jr. for president. He's horrifically right-wing, he just hides it better than Musk.
| by Anonymous | reply 176 | July 4, 2023 3:04 PM |
r174 VR is a wholly new ecosystem though, while it shouldn't be THAT hard to convince Insta users to maybe share some of their thoughts on Threads as well. Plus, they have the whole advertising machine oiled up and ready to go.
| by Anonymous | reply 177 | July 4, 2023 3:06 PM |
R176- Good point. I suppose he has been quieter about being a Nazi than EM has so he slipps under my radar sometimes.
| by Anonymous | reply 178 | July 4, 2023 3:11 PM |
I have been on Threads all morning and I really like it. It is so nice to not see blue checks, Nazis , and RW assholes on my feed.
| by Anonymous | reply 179 | July 6, 2023 3:29 PM |
r179 is there adult content there or not yet
| by Anonymous | reply 180 | July 7, 2023 1:18 AM |
Instragram doesn't allow porn, so no - their guidelines say: “We don’t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse and genitals.”
