| by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 6, 2023 5:10 AM |
The mother’s FB post seems oddly detached or casual (or maybe I’m just reading it that way).
I’m 53, when I was young we had a toy chest with a very heavy lid. It wasn’t cedar and I think it had slats, so not airtight, but I definitely think it could have been dangerous.

| by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 6, 2023 5:24 AM |
The story says that they were using an old cedar chest to store their stuffed animals. It’s probably something the mom “up-cycled” with a coat of milk paint.
Those Lane cedar chests are notorious death traps. Scores of children over the years, generally playing hide-and-seek, have died this way, so much so that the company will send anyone who has one of any age a new closure mechanism which doesn’t latch.

I realize the family is Floridian trash, but it’s disingenuous to refer to it as a “cedar toy chest.” It was a real chest, made from heavy wood, which was used to store their Dollar General toys.

The weird details like about exactly when they went in the box and the supposition that they kicked the lid shut. It just seems like weird additional details you wouldn't even think to recount unless you were making up a story. Like someone mentioned it's such a clinically detached cadence in the post. On the other hand I imagine you might be a bit numb and detached just to survive losing to kids so idk.

R11 I have the largest one featured on that ad. Was 10.00 and I stripped and refinished it, has lovely teak veneer under the yellowed varnish. It makes for a good bench for the dogs, and stores my off season wardrobe nicely. They were all over FB marketplace at the end of 2020, but their prices skyrocketed after a few months of getting steals. I love cedar and the original lock is still in tact. There are never children in my bedroom so it hasn't posed any problems.
It's quite possible it was accidental, the lid is heavy as hell. But, you'd have to be a complete idiot to let kids play with one with an intact lock or use for their toys, Fisher Price plastic has a time and a place. If you start researching these chests the dangers of suffocating are always mentioned. Multiple times.

I have my mother's old Lane cedar chest. Right now it's filled with Costco toilet paper. I will say there is no way anyone should ever let little kids near one of t hese. The lids are very heavy. Now, if I were the medical examiner, I'd definitely try to determine the cause of death. Because they could have gone into the chest unconscious. No way they "fell asleep. " they suffocated.
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 6, 2023 4:22 PM |
That mother's explanation of what happened was riddled with guilty knowledge. Even if the kids were playing in the cedar chest and fell asleep, how the fuck would you not hear the cedar chest lid slamming shut. My theory is that the twins were already dead and they put them in the cedar chest to create an alibi. That makes the most sense.

R41 we need more idiot control. The damned things have hanging tag warnings, cardboard insert warnings, and services for lock removal.
Also those kids would've had a good bit of upper body strength just to open a Lane. Unless it's one of the most recently made, with a lighter lid, but they also require you to press the lock and lift to open most. Very dexterous children of the damned, or IDIOT breeder parents. 🙄
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 6, 2023 5:05 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 6, 2023 5:07 PM |
Well, they've learned from the mistakes of other people.
Keep the story simple. Don't go for the big splashy news conference begging for the kids to come home or be returned.
Plausible deniability is the phrase of the day.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 6, 2023 5:30 PM |
This is ridiculous. Like someone above said, the lid closing would be loud enough to warrant a parent checking in on the kids.
I'm sorry, but any adult who isn't a meth head knows children shouldn't play in chests. Just like kids shouldn't hide in old refrigerators. All toy boxes now are built with air holes and slow closing lids.
Best case scenario is the parents are absolute morons and they did die in the chest. If so, those children suffered a terrible death.
It's either neglect or murder, but it's not a freak accident.
Florida is just one constant stream of human awfulness.

By their own reports, the boys played outside while the parents slept. The twins played at night and early morning while the parents slept. What could possibly go wrong?
| by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 6, 2023 5:50 PM |
"Something I did not know and I’m sure many others don’t know is that most wooden toy chests once closed are AIR TIGHT and also sound proof," she continued. "So as they slept, all snuggled up together, they slowly ran out of oxygen."
No, most everyone does know that about cedar chests. If they wanted to put it in their room, all they needed to do was add an opening and remove the lock. This is asinine. Knowing that your children get up in the middle of the night and play unattended is even more reason to not put dangerous furniture in their room.
It sounded like she was annoyed with them "waking each other up." Most parents of recently deceased children don't speak of the child critically at all. Well, I got that info from a documentary, but still. It seems odd.
Those children did not simply slip away whilst in a peaceful slumber. I'm glad the sheriff said an investigation is pending, and they aren't ready to call it an accident yet.
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 6, 2023 5:56 PM |

"As they slept, all snuggled up together, they slowly ran out of oxygen within a couple of hours and passed away. They never even knew it was happening. There was no sudden gasp for air, it was a very slow transition from sleep to passing on…." she says.
I found this in a different article. Describing what the death was like when you supposedly did not witness it is very suspicious to me.
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 6, 2023 5:59 PM |
911 responded around noon. Does that sound like a reasonable time to be getting out of bed to get ready for work? A time of day where a parent would assume their 4 year old twins would still be sleeping?
It sounds as though the father was still in bed, too.
Scumbags.

The parents lullaby description of their death seems way off. How they seem know their transition was so loving and peaceful? Most parents would react by saying, "I hope they didn't suffer, my dear angels", not: "It was so peaceful, they never knew a thing, no gasping or thrashing". Yikes.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 6, 2023 6:24 PM |
The following is from the mother's Facebook post. The overelaboration of certain details and the complete fantasy of much of it raise a number of red flags.
"Last Friday night while I was at work, don put the boys and the twins to bed, then soon after went to bed himself… When I got home from work a couple hours later I looked in at all the kids like usual to make sure they were sleeping, then ate my dinner and went to sleep… At some point early that morning the twins woke each other up and decided they wanted to play in their room rather than sleep, they do this a lot, it’s just a twin thing I guess, and then they usually fall asleep in some weird place in their room with toys left everywhere so mom and dad can see proof of their late night playing when we get up in the morning… Friday night the weird place they decided to snuggle up and go back to sleep was in their cedar toy chest that we use to store all their stuffed animals.. They pulled out all but a couple stuffed animals, I guess they left some to keep it comfy in there, then they laid inside head to toe with one arm each over their twin and I’m assuming said “good night kell kell” and “night night sissy”… Sometime during their sleep one of them must have moved or kicked during a dream and it caused the lid of this old wooden cedar chest to close… Something I did not know and I’m sure many others don’t know is that most wooden toy chests once closed are AIR TIGHT and also sound proof. So as they slept, all snuggled up together, they slowly ran out of oxygen within a couple of hours and passed away. They never even knew it was happening. There was no sudden gasp for air, it was a very slow transition from sleep to passing on…. "

When you have toddlers play with a Lane Cedar Chest, even if they didn't get in it, that lid could slam down and smash tiny fingers or break an arm. it's dangerous. She killed those kids or the husband did it. Something is definitely off. My mother got one for a pre wedding gift back in the '50's. It was in her bedroom and she stored linens and stuff. We were never allowed near it.I remember being curious to see what was in it but it was too hard for me to open. You had to push the button in and lift it and I was 7-8 and just couldn't do it.
| by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 6, 2023 6:33 PM |
Yeah this was no accident. Her facebook post is bonkers. Most parents lay low after a tragedy like this and communicate through a family spokesperson.
The poster saying a normal response is to pray they didn't suffer, not spin a yarn where they died "peacefully." They suffocated while you slept, lady. Nothing peaceful about it.
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 6, 2023 6:38 PM |
She calls it a "wooden toy chest." It's a heavy wooden chest she got at a flea market somewhere, not a "toy chest."
Even if it happened like she said, she and her husband are at fault. They brought a heavy wooden death trap into their house for no good reason and let their kids have unsupervised access 24/7. Morons.

Yes, the elaborate fairytale Mommy posted on FB is what rouses my suspicion. How many times has the guilty party concocted a story of plausibility worthy of a Lifetime or Hallmark movie, only to be hauled off in cuffs? Social media and things like GFM have made it worse. The family wants their fifteen minutes and money, lots and lots of money.
"Has Orcah called yet? Meagain? Drew? Kelly? Maybe Shania will want to write a song about me! How's the GoFundMe doing? Is that all? Fuck! Cheap assholes!"
I recall when I was a kid, they began producing plastic toy chests which could easily snap apart in situations like this.

If I, a childless homosexual of a similar age who has never childproofed a home, knew that these cedar chests were death traps then it is expected that a father and mother should have as well.
If it was not just a stupid accident, all signs point to Father. He was the one who put them to bed. Mother, who is giving the family’s version of events, didn’t visually check that they were in their beds when she got home from work.
The fact that 911 wasn’t called until noon, if that’s true from upthread, is a huge read flag. Why was there a pause between breakfast, when a parent would surely miss their twin 2 year-olds, and the call to 911? Even if the children had simply wandered into the woods behind the house, that amount of time would raise questions with CPS.

I've laughed a few times at this thread but really, I think too many of you are being brutally and unnecessarily unfair to the parents. The link below is to a People.com article where the mom goes into more detail.
I have an antique cedar chest too but honestly, if it were being used as a toy box, I don't think I'd ever consider it as an immediate thread if the lock were disabled. People make mistakes. Contrary to all the hate the mother is getting, she does state that she had something on the box to prevent it from locking and she thought it also prevented it from closing all the way. So it seems like she did try to take precautions.
It's also 2023, so no doubt the parents realize people are going to suspect them because we're all so cynical these days, which is maybe why the mom gave a detailed posting of what happened. Maybe wait to see if the police come up with anything suspicious and if not, have some sympathy for these folks. Their kids seemed to be taken care of, the mom and dad clearly encouraged them to play. Judging from the couple of pics on People, they weren't well off or even upper middle class types. The default heat some of you give off in these situations surprises even me, and I'm a pretty cynical asshole most of the time. No reason why the parents can't be sympathized with unless and until we learn something isn't right.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 7, 2023 2:24 PM |
The whole point b of a toy box is to teach kids to put things away, but also so that the toys are accessible. What's the point of having all these favorite stuffed toys if the kids can't get to them. So the cedar chest was a magnet for the kids and it was a real unsafe way to store toys. I still say foul play. Maybe her older boys did it as a joke. Lock them in the toy box so they could go outside. Maybe the husband did it. Who knows. But they didn't do it on their own. This was no accident
| by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 7, 2023 2:34 PM |
R89 - Interesting that you keep promoting suspicion to be put on the males of the family but not the mother. And your "But they didn't do it on their own" comment. What do you know the rest of us don't? How do you happen to know this so confidently, other than hoping, with wringing hands, that one of the male children or the father killed them, because you're one of those women who get off on such things, aren't you? The MEN always do it, right R89?

I have a 1930s-early 1940s (or earlier) cedar chest that is blonde wood with extensive lighter colored woodcarving for the trim, as if it was meant to be a wedding cake, with a waterfall front edge and interior tray that lifts with the lid. I don't know if it's a Lane - I always felt it was carved in Germany because of the exquisite detailing. I should look for a mark. It is tremendously heavy. 20 years ago I paid $500 to have it shipped across country.
Anyway, I don't think a 4 year old would be able to lift it, maybe 2 four year olds they could manage it, but even so the lifted tray is an obstacle. Poor tykes.

My mother's Lane Cedar Chest was a gift from her parents to keep her linens in. My Gran even crocheted lace trim on pillow cases and sheets, etc. When she died I decided to keep it because it held memories for me of family. It also has that tray that comes out with the lid. Very very heavy. My mother got married to my father in 1940. So I assume the chest was made then or a year or two earlier. It is super heavy and yes, you had to push the button to get it to open. There is no way in hell two little girls aged four did it by themselves. I just cannot believe/accept that.

Aww, I think they're typically cute four year olds. Poor little fellas. The one on the left is a boy with long hair. They aren't clear enough on that in the articles.
I'm guessing they'll find the time of death was something like 8:00 PM, therefore the twins were unattended for nearly 16 hours. That would go against the mother's statement. Or they'll find benadryl in their system. Maybe the mother was overwhelmed since the twins' arrival. They had time in a NICU, which can greatly increase the risk of post partum depression. They got into everything, even making messes in the middle of the night. The mom snapped, drugged them, placed them in the chest and closed the lid. She sat by it, numb. That's how she knows it's soundproof (her word) and that the twins went quietly, not even a gasp at the end. She just wanted things to be back to what they were like before the babies were born. She didn't want them to suffer, but she also didn't want them anymore.
Or they are addicts and were out of it. The older boys locked the twins in the chest as a joke, not realizing they wouldn't be able to breathe.
There's no way to accidentally close the lid when you're a sleeping toddler. That makes no sense. It's not normal for parents of four year olds to sleep until nearly noon. It's not normal for those parents to wait until almost noon to check on their supposedly sleeping four year olds. It's not normal for a mother to speak this way after a shocking loss. The father just explained to the kids that "death is a part of life"? And that was that. Her description of events sounds as though her and her husband had a panicked conversation and created the narrative they're following. It just doesn't ring true.
She said the kids are staying with relatives while they are dealing with the loss. Maybe the kids are staying elsewhere at the insistence of CPS.
Right. Apparently I over write when stoned. For some reason this situation struck a chord with me. I'm surprised more people aren't bringing up the red flags in online comments. Hopefully the medical examiner and detectives find all the evidence they need if there was neglect or homicide.

Sounds like foul play to me.
The mother's account of how it happened reads like someone who's trying to make the facts bend to a particular narrative, rather than an account of what actually happened. There's also too much explanation with phrases like "they do this a lot", which sounds like she's trying to convince people who might be doubtful.
Maybe I'm overly suspicious, but something feels off.

R117 it seems like the mom of the twins (I swear I thought the one in the frog costume was a boy) took lessons from our very own tot mom Miss Casey Anthony on how to put children to sleep safely and forever……
R111 after living in Floriduh for twenty yrs, yes, they did go after the parents and bus drivers who left the babies to fry in hot vehicles
As of yesterday a report said they were still investigating the twins death (murder) contrary to those on Facebook who claimed the autopsy showed it was just a silly accident and let’s just move on…….
As snarky as I am, I’m furious over this……as a poster said above, I take more precautions with my beloved cats, least anything might happen to them and good god, if something did, my grief would be so deep I wouldnt take right to Facebook begging for money

What kind of parent lets their kids sleep until noon?
What kind of parent wouldn't at least peek in on them first thing? Okay, I get it's summer, they're 2, what's the big rush to get them up and out of bed, but kids usually wake up early and hungry. Not buying that sleeping past noon was "normal" for these two two year olds who were apparently unsupervised a lot at home.
I'm thinking one or both parents have a substance abuse problem and were "sleeping it off" habitually. The mom works night shift so I understand she has an excuse for "sleeping in" since she works late, but the dad? Does he even work? Even if heks the stay at home parent, he's going to bed before the mom gets home so surely he's up earlier too? I mean, "stay at home" means watch the kids, right? Unless...

139, they are highly collectible and sell for about $25-50 a piece, depending on a few variables such as date and location. They all have the name of the presenting furniture store and its location stamped on the underside of the top and the avid collectors tend to focus on a region or state or try to get all of the states. I have a small collection. They were made by the company from the cedar scraps from the production of the large ones and were given to graduating girls because it was assumed they would shortly be setting up their first homes and decide to buy a cedar chest.

| by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 9, 2023 3:20 PM |
R149. I’m stating the think you could be right…..how about a rousing game of hide and see? There were two older kids. Maybe one put the toddlers in the chest as a good hiding place and forgot about them…just because mom says they got up at night to “play” doesn’t mean her story is true.
She probably got home from work and was grateful it was quite and assumed everyone was asleep…I’m betting she checked on none of the kids
| by Anonymous | reply 158 | September 9, 2023 4:08 PM |
I don't think other people were involved. And the way the mom describes the lid falling shut makes me think the default was to leave the lid open. They wouldn't need an older person to put them in it, they just climbed in themselves.
Whether she checked on them at night is irrelevant. What's alarming is not checking on them until the afternoon of the following day. What the fuck goes on in that house in the morning? Parents sleeping til noon and 2 year-olds totally unsupervised for 12+ hours.

You decided DL was a place where dead 4 year-olds were never mocked, and everyone listened to reason and responded to appeals to common decency with enthusiastic conformity. You were wrong, and wildly so. Anyone who has been here for more than 5 years could tell you that, but DL has been so aggressively inundated with the likes of you lately that it needs to be stated quite emphatically: DL IS NOT FOR YOU.
