tracking for mere $20-23 million opening

Writer James Williams

This is shockingly bad for a Warner Bros. tentpole

Mary Poppins Returns, Disney’s attempt at artificial respiration of a 60s musical, also opened at $23 million but that was a couple years ago.

by Anonymousreply 90November 29, 2023 12:26 PM

The parents will bring their kiddies to it during the holidays. It might have legs.

Mary Poppins Returns had legs, but needed to make much more to break even. It ended up on par with live action Dumbo, another Disney flop. Plus, Emily Blunt doesn’t bring butts to the cinema seats.

by Anonymousreply 1November 3, 2023 8:10 PM

Doesn’t it open in December? I don’t understand how people take these predictions seriously. You don’t know what it will make until it opens. They predicted Barbie would open to $80 million and it surpassed that greatly. They predicted The Flash would open with $120 million and that wasn’t the case. They’re wrong all the time.

by Anonymousreply 2November 3, 2023 8:17 PM

STUPID STATISTIC. DUMB THREAD.

by Anonymousreply 3November 3, 2023 8:22 PM

Men under 35 are the most interested? WTF?

by Anonymousreply 4November 3, 2023 8:34 PM

“A family movie such as Wonka has the potential to play to the heartland.”

HARD PASS!!!

by Anonymousreply 5November 3, 2023 8:36 PM
A family movie such as Wonka has the potential to play to the heartland

Its a musical starring an actor best known for fucking a peach, playing a character no ones cared about since Gene Wilder where the plot is seemingly him recruiting dwarf slaves (all played by Hugh Grant) to wok in his chocolate factory. Nothing about it really screams Kansas will love this to me.

by Anonymousreply 6November 3, 2023 8:43 PM

No wonder he's scabbing and doing SNL

by Anonymousreply 7November 3, 2023 9:03 PM

The inevitable failure of this film brings me great joy. I love it when flops flop.

by Anonymousreply 8November 3, 2023 9:28 PM

It won’t even make that.

by Anonymousreply 10November 3, 2023 9:36 PM

That’s what happens when you date a Kartrashian, Timothèe.

by Anonymousreply 11November 3, 2023 9:41 PM

The Gene Wilder version was/is so beloved. Hollywood and Broadway keep trying to get something from it and fail. There were a ton of critics who said the Tim Burton remake was better than the original. The public disagreed.

by Anonymousreply 12November 3, 2023 9:53 PM

There are a handful of movies that are almost sacred to the public, and they don't WANT them remade, ever. WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is one of those movies.

by Anonymousreply 13November 3, 2023 10:24 PM

There were a lot of people looking forward to the remake but when they saw it, they understood that the things that made the original so special was not special effects but the heart and soul of the story and performances. I think the kid who played Mike TeeVee in the remake was good but I seriously can't remember any of the others, even Freddie Highmore. And don't get me started on Johnny Depp.

by Anonymousreply 14November 3, 2023 10:34 PM

Face it Warner Brothers and GQ: he ain’t a star and nobody wants to see him in anything.

by Anonymousreply 15November 3, 2023 10:36 PM

He has great possibilities. Just ask my spawn.

by Anonymousreply 16November 3, 2023 10:44 PM

So, is this a sequel to the Depp wonka movie?

Or is this ANOTHER remake of Gene Wilder wonka?

by Anonymousreply 17November 3, 2023 11:55 PM

Fat ass Hugh Grant is playing Oompa Loompa? A 4ft midget?

Poor 47 year old Sally Hawkins playa the PFLAG mom to Chalamet’s Wonka. She went from an Oscar nomination to this crap?

by Anonymousreply 18November 4, 2023 12:01 AM

I can't believe they made this again. Everything else will be Subaru to the original Gene Wilder

by Anonymousreply 19November 4, 2023 12:13 AM

I take offense to that, R19.

by Anonymousreply 20November 4, 2023 1:03 AM

r17, I think it's a prequel, not a sequel.

I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong, but I think this Wonka presents the story before WW & TCF.

by Anonymousreply 21November 4, 2023 1:38 AM

Yah it's the Wonka origin story which absolutely everyone was clamouring for...

by Anonymousreply 22November 4, 2023 2:04 AM

Does TIMOTHEE'S Wonka show his SCRAWNY ass?

by Anonymousreply 23November 4, 2023 2:05 AM

I must be the only person here who actually [italic]liked[/italic] the Tim Burton version, I guess.

I watched the original version throughout my early childhood whenever it came on TV (or was sort of made to watch it, because it was an “event”), and was mildly traumatised by its sinister undercurrent. I know that’s [italic]absolutely[/italic] what Roald Dahl intended when he wrote the books, but I could never shake off that childhood bias, I guess, and so it still creeps me out.

by Anonymousreply 24November 4, 2023 2:06 AM

Why do they keep remaking this?

by Anonymousreply 25November 4, 2023 2:06 AM
That’s what happens when you date a Kartrashian, Timothèe.

No, that’s what happens when you can’t act and look like you haven’t hit puberty.

by Anonymousreply 26November 4, 2023 2:08 AM

Show me chocolate starfish!

by Anonymousreply 29November 4, 2023 2:25 AM

I'll buy a ticket to Wonka.

Not because I'm a Chalamet fan, but because, through Christmas and New Years, I'm usually in the mood to see a big-budget Holiday movie, no matter its reviews.

I go back to the Pleistocene Epoch.

I'm old enough to have, as a child, seen "Scrooge" (Albert Finney) at its first run in the theatre.

by Anonymousreply 30November 4, 2023 2:38 AM

The Burton remake was worthless trash, and it has to be one of Elfman's most boring, predictable scores (there's a duo that got tired a long time ago...but the whole Burton thing did as well).

The one thing I liked about that film, is the boat sequence. Sure, the original is iconic, with Wilder's monologue, and all its projections. BUT the remake went a long way to imply how massive the factory is, with the depiction of the boat ride.

It also covered The Nut Room pretty well, but everyone in the film is so fucking annoying (even when they're not meant to be), I didn't even want to watch the rest of the film by that point.

by Anonymousreply 31November 4, 2023 2:40 AM

Because, because...what we increasingly and continually need is the multiple remaking of fewer and fewer films and film types by Hollywood over and over and over again. And the Hollywood Industry dwellers wonder why non-Industry human beings back here on planet Earth don't always have much patience or sympathy for the striking actors' "plights" and demands.

by Anonymousreply 32November 4, 2023 3:50 AM

Who would be a good 20 something Wonka?

Sly, smart, ambitious, subtle, outrageous ? ...

by Anonymousreply 33November 4, 2023 3:58 AM

R18 Have you seen how ugly she is? She has a disease.

by Anonymousreply 34November 4, 2023 4:04 AM

R23: If he didn't show it in that cannibal flop movie, do you honestly think he's going to bare his bony butt in this family-friendly fare?

by Anonymousreply 35November 4, 2023 4:17 AM

This looks horrific. Just like the Depp one. No originality. Just quirkiness for the sake of it?

Ummmm. No.

This looks like it will suck.

by Anonymousreply 36November 4, 2023 6:43 AM

It’s hard to tell if any of the Christmas releases will be hits.

Ferrari, The Color Purple, Wonka….

by Anonymousreply 37November 4, 2023 7:13 AM
No wonder he's scabbing and doing SNL

I wonder if they booked him thinking that the strike might be settled by then? And if it turns out not to be, would he have to cancel?

by Anonymousreply 38November 4, 2023 7:17 AM

r38 The timing fits well with the original release date for Dune 2, so this could be a very long-term booking. And he's clearly not going to cancel, he wants attention too much

by Anonymousreply 39November 4, 2023 8:15 AM

Oh, and he's been scabbing already

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 40November 4, 2023 8:16 AM

Apparently actors can appear on SNL during the strike as long as they don’t promote their upcoming films. Still, he will be acting out some scripted content so this loophole is bullshit. I hope he gets a Drew Barrymore backlash for doing this shit. This really shouldn’t surprise anyone since he never misses an opportunity to get in front of a camera, microphone, or photo lens.

by Anonymousreply 41November 4, 2023 11:27 AM

He's hosting on a major tv show 2 weeks before he has a film out. Its promotional scabbing for all intents and purposes even if its technically not against the rules. The fact no one in SAG has yet raised an objection is amazing to me.

by Anonymousreply 42November 4, 2023 12:05 PM

I think the same logic can be applied to the GQ puff piece, which talks extensively about the Wonka movie. How can any of this shit be allowed? As others have expressed, I think if anything the scabbing indicates that they know they have a flop on their hands.

by Anonymousreply 43November 4, 2023 12:38 PM
I must be the only person here who actually liked the Tim Burton version, I guess.

You're not. I don't think it's a great movie, but it's not some abomination.

I really don't have a lot of affection for the Gene Wilder version for whatever reason. It gave us a few good memes, Julie Dawn Cole's iconic Veruca, and the boat scene, which left a huge scar on the collective psyche of Gen X.

by Anonymousreply 44November 4, 2023 2:35 PM

r42 Exactly, though it may be within the technical rules of the strike, it clearly isn't within the spirit of the strike. Gonna take a wild guess that he hasn't been seen on any picket lines.

by Anonymousreply 45November 4, 2023 9:44 PM

Has Timmy ever starred in a hit that wasn't Dune?

by Anonymousreply 46November 4, 2023 10:03 PM

R45: He hasn’t picketed at all. It can’t be a timing issue considering he hasn’t worked (aside from the 2 commercials) since wrapping Dune 2. A combination of his own ego and pressures from the studio no doubt factored into the decision to do SNL. R46: No and the scabbing just proves how in denial he and studio are about the fact that he doesn’t bring butts to seats.

by Anonymousreply 47November 4, 2023 10:09 PM

Deadline is trying so hard to cheerlead this inevitable flop.

Try harder, bitches.

by Anonymousreply 48November 4, 2023 11:15 PM

No one watches SNL. What a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 49November 4, 2023 11:19 PM

OP, did you even bother reading the article? Or are you just intent on bashing TC knowing others wouldn't read the article either?

"Warner Bros‘ anticipated Paul King-directed feature musical Wonka has hit early tracking six weeks before its release on December 5, with box office analytics film The Quorum predicting a $20 million-$23 million opening. Note it’s still early in the campaign, so there’s potential for upside. Unlike other tracking services that project three weeks before a movie’s release, Quorum is six weeks ahead.

Note, holiday moviegoing always explodes post-Christmas after the masses are worry-free of holiday activities and a movie such as Wonka has the potential to leg out much like other holiday musicals, i.e., The Greatest Showman, which had a six-day holiday launch of $19M and went on to make $174.3M. Family films and other tentpoles historically have had great multiples off their openings over the holiday season. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish last year opened to $12.4M and did a near 15x multiple, with a final domestic of $185.5M."

by Anonymousreply 50November 4, 2023 11:51 PM

R49: Agreed. Maybe he’s just bored smoking pot all day.

by Anonymousreply 51November 4, 2023 11:52 PM

Of course it FLOPPED

The star has an acorn sized cock and a SCRAWNY ass.

by Anonymousreply 53November 8, 2023 7:03 PM

His success in films is mystifying…

by Anonymousreply 54November 8, 2023 7:06 PM

You know it’s just killing him that he didn’t get Sexiest Man Alive.

by Anonymousreply 55November 8, 2023 7:16 PM

Although I really can’t stand Jeremy Alan White and his ferret face he would have made a better Young Wonka than Chalamet.

by Anonymousreply 56November 8, 2023 8:35 PM

R53: You're in trouble Mouseboy!

by Anonymousreply 57November 8, 2023 9:36 PM

His 'thing' worked when he played confused adolescents, but it's not translating to adulthood.

by Anonymousreply 58November 8, 2023 10:24 PM

How is this flopping?!?! It has the world's sexiest actor!!!!

by Anonymousreply 59November 8, 2023 10:25 PM

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they end up making Austin Butler do all the promo for Dune 2 in the event Wonka ends up flopping? He does have a Golden Globe after all.

by Anonymousreply 60November 8, 2023 11:04 PM

Teenage girls love Timothy Chalamet.

by Anonymousreply 61November 8, 2023 11:06 PM

They should have gone for a darker / alternative route with adult themes.

Like Barbie.

Kids don’t watch movies anymore! Especially little iPad kids who have no attention span.

by Anonymousreply 62November 8, 2023 11:15 PM

R54 here.

And it's not even success, is it? He's had a couple of bombs on his CV...but they keep putting him in stuff...why?

by Anonymousreply 64November 8, 2023 11:33 PM

Did Lorne know the strike would be over by Saturday?……

I saw Scrooge as a boy at Radio City. A deluxe presentation in 70mm and 6 track stereo. Quite an experience. I haven't bothered to see it again.

by Anonymousreply 68November 9, 2023 7:26 AM

Please cancel this creature.

by Anonymousreply 69November 9, 2023 1:48 PM

r68, this is r30. Wow. that must've been something to see.

When I saw "Scrooge" as a kid, it was just on a standard, theatre big-screen and audio and that was overwhelming.

I haven't watched it again, either, except to sit for a few moments with it when I'm channel surfing during the holidays and it's on.

It's probably the best representation those UK 60s and 70s, over-produced, big-budget, too-long musicals ("Oliver Twist") that all had the same mood and aura to them.

At my first watching of the "Wonka" trailer, it took me back to those movies and I think that could be deliberate on the part of the director.

I said in the other thread that I think "Wonka" won't be a blockbuster, but will do solid, holidays time business.

Still, although I'm going to see it, I think I'm more intrigued by whatever Wonka's box-office returns will be, over the actual movie.

by Anonymousreply 70November 9, 2023 2:13 PM

I liked the Depp version because he hated the kids.

by Anonymousreply 71November 9, 2023 2:21 PM

I actuality think this will do well. It’s uplifting for the holidays and counter programming available for kids in December amongst stodgy adult fare like Ferrari and Napoleon (both of those look so dull).

by Anonymousreply 72November 9, 2023 2:31 PM

I don’t believe for a second that he and Kylie are in a genuine relationship. I’m curious though as to how he satisfies his physical needs, if any? Do you think it’s celebrity dating apps, VIP escort services, or maybe he just prefers to masturbate?

by Anonymousreply 73November 9, 2023 11:02 PM
I don’t believe for a second that he and Kylie are in a genuine relationship.

Why not?

by Anonymousreply 74November 9, 2023 11:22 PM

The stupidity of some posters in this thread is truly frightening.

by Anonymousreply 75November 10, 2023 12:21 AM

It's gonna be one long month of promo now that the strike is over.

by Anonymousreply 76November 10, 2023 2:40 AM

People are so sick of this pasty, girly little queer. His mumbled acting. His utterly manufactured sex appeal. His awful fucking name.

And now he's stepping on the grave of the great Gene Wilder.

Where's a Buffalo Bill kidnapping when you need one? At least TC would have the skin tone to match someone living at the bottom of a well.

by Anonymousreply 77November 10, 2023 5:28 AM

His singing is nowhere in the trailer. That should tell you everything you need to know.

by Anonymousreply 78November 10, 2023 8:53 PM

Why not give a cute little black twink a shot instead of forcing this box office poison down our throats.

by Anonymousreply 79November 10, 2023 9:03 PM

Oh that hat ! The film should be boycotted just for that ghastly hat.

by Anonymousreply 80November 10, 2023 9:28 PM

Now they’re projecting an opening weekend of $35-45 million. It will be lucky if it gets Captain Marvel numbers. I guess it needs to make at least $300 million worldwide to break even. Whether or not it has legs is going to depend on reviews and word of mouth and whether the kids are that desperate and whiny enough to want to see it again.

Put a thick one up Timmy's Hershey highway - that'll bring them into the theater.

by Anonymousreply 82November 24, 2023 8:22 PM

Huge red flag in that they haven’t promoted it as a musical and haven’t shown any clips of him singing.

by Anonymousreply 83November 24, 2023 8:25 PM

That photo is the visual definition of insufferable

by Anonymousreply 84November 24, 2023 8:39 PM

If this becomes a hit it’ll because people still love nostalgia. It brings them back to when their lives had happiness. And they’ll then bring their kids to see it thus cementing their wrongful belief they yes, they indeed, are still happy.

It looks ghastly.

by Anonymousreply 85November 29, 2023 5:53 AM

Too dark looking to be a kids movie. It has David Fincher vibes.

Timmy simply ain’t popular. Audiences want to see men who look like men, not like little girls.
