Tony Bennett is DEAD TO ME

Writer Robert Guerrero

Looks like Gaga caught him just in time.

RIP

by Anonymousreply 1July 21, 2023 1:34 PM

Great crooner. But notoriously cheap.

by Anonymousreply 2July 21, 2023 1:34 PM

About time - quite frankly. Lots of the very old ones all seem to be going in one batch.

He was NINETY-SIX, Mary. How long did you and your mother expect him to hang around for?

Dammit- he was one of the true greats.

Even on his most maligned album, he’s superb.

by Anonymousreply 20July 21, 2023 1:49 PM

Attended his appearance with The Boston Pops years ago.

It was being taped for PBS and after Tony exquisitely sang “Fly Me To the Moon”, the director stopped the taping and asked Tony to sing it again, which upset Tony tremendously.

“Gladys, you yutz. These aren't for Tony Bennett. They're for Tony Martin!”

“Of course they're for Tony Martin. You think I'd camp overnight for tickets to Tony Bennett?”

by Anonymousreply 22July 21, 2023 1:54 PM

He has some sort of revival, didn't he? Like Tom Jones.

by Anonymousreply 34July 21, 2023 2:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 35July 21, 2023 2:23 PM

by Anonymousreply 42July 21, 2023 2:29 PM

R39, apparently you can’t read either. Please read my post again and double-check the post reference. It wasn’t referring to you.

Normally I don’t correct grammar, having made a ton of typos on DL over the years, but I can’t help correct the grammar of someone who corrected someone’s grammar. Now, back to Tony Bennett.

I don’t know, I wasn’t aware of him as a crooner as much as I was aware of Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Perry Como, etc. I think it was his longevity that helped him become a legend.

by Anonymousreply 47July 21, 2023 2:40 PM

Last crooner standing status really worked well for Tony in later life. And now, cue to Lady Gaga making Tony's demise ALL about HERSELF!

by Anonymousreply 48July 21, 2023 2:43 PM

Rest In Peace, Tony. 😢

by Anonymousreply 49July 21, 2023 2:43 PM

You referenced R33. That was me. I "oh, dear"ed myself in R34.

Nice try.

by Anonymousreply 50July 21, 2023 2:44 PM

My mother's favorite, and so I always listened to him. She liked his eyes and his manner. No small feat to have the longevity he enjoyed. His last years were invigorated by his relationship with Gaga. The respect and love she showed him in private and public were admirable. Watching the last special they made together, one can't doubt her emotions. His wife and son ushered him through these last years, nice that he was cared for till the end.

Besides his singing career, he was an accomplished painter. He donated much and worked to support music education.

by Anonymousreply 51July 21, 2023 2:46 PM

The Tony Bennett Memorial Foundation has three primary initiatives. First, we provide financial assistance to families who survive the death of a loved one by suicide. Resources include financial assistance for things such as funeral expenses, grief counseling, and other needs specific to each family. Second, we support suicide prevention and awareness activities in our community and schools. Our third initiative is awarding scholarships to graduating seniors at area high schools. We focus our awards on students who have overcome all types of adversities such as the loss of a loved one to suicide, significant injuries or disabilities, or other life-altering events. This work is made possible through our various fundraisers throughout the year and the support of our community.

He fostered a style of singing that was in danger of dying out. Harry Connick, Michel Buble et al owe a lot to Tony Bennett. Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, too. He's their forebear and he deserves all the props.

by Anonymousreply 75July 21, 2023 4:09 PM

I'll always remember Tony in one of my all-time favorite BAD movies: The Oscar (1966). He plays Hymie Kelly, an Irish-Jewish flunky for a ruthless aspiring actor. It's a non-singing role and he was so stiff and awful in it. One of those bad movies you love to watch.

by Anonymousreply 78July 21, 2023 4:35 PM

Tony was awkward even when singing, R76. His stage movement could get comical. That being said, the ONLY reason Sinatra is more revered and well known imho is because of his movie career. Tony was impossible as an actor.

by Anonymousreply 80July 21, 2023 4:37 PM

Thank you, r72. I am amazed by the artists of that era who would risk their careers, and their personal safety, to be part of a movement that was NOT popular in its time. Bennett was a brave soul.

RIP Tony. I love him dearly, being a jazz/standards aficionado for years now. One of my favorites by him has lyrics that could have been written by a DLer:

I want to be around to pick up the pieces

When somebody breaks your heart

Some somebody twice as smart as I

A somebody who will swear to be true

As you used to do with me

Who'll leave you to learn

That misery loves company, wait and see

I mean, I want to be around to see how he does it

When he breaks your heart to bits

Let's see if the puzzle fits so fine

And that's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet

As I sit there applauding from a front-row seat

When somebody breaks your heart

Like you, like you broke mine

Some people find his their default version of "The Way You Look Tonight." It's my favorite song of all time, and I don't like his version very much. In fact, I've never heard a recorded version that's as good as the song. Still, it's hard not to listen to his version today.

I heard a punk group do a really razzle-dazzle, pulsating version in the 1980s, but they never recorded it.

r82 & r84: Both are sublime in their own ways. Great song that I'm sung in my head several times over the years.

Unlike Tony, Eydie never got the respect she deserved.

r90: Thank you for that. Mathis sounds wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 97July 21, 2023 5:33 PM

Tony had some great hits in the 1950s. I miss the orchestration behind these artists as much as the artists themselves. He was terrible in The Oscar, but that’s one of the bomb’s charms. Most of the antagonistic opinions in these posts are ignorance, which is a sad reflection on today’s culture. I’m glad the prevailing sentiment is that he is to be honored. He’s a ‘relic’ whose charms are well worth revisiting. Like Sophia’s friend, I prefer Tony Martin’s voice as well, but he was a republican so, he had his day.

by Anonymousreply 98July 21, 2023 5:36 PM

I had no idea he ever acted. It's a weird thing to focus on now because I don't think most people alive ever knew that he acted in one movie 55 years ago. It's a footnote to his career at best.

by Anonymousreply 99July 21, 2023 5:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 114July 21, 2023 9:14 PM

Lady Gaga once said she was going to quit music, but Tony Bennett "saved" her life

[quote]"I was so sad. I couldn't sleep. I felt dead," she said. "And then I spent a lot of time with Tony. He wanted nothing but my friendship and my voice."

by Anonymousreply 115July 21, 2023 9:16 PM

I'll mention this once and then move on...

When I was in college in the 70s, I had a close gay friend who told me that his older ex-lover had a years-long affair with Tony Bennett. He said they had met at a summer concert venue in Framingham, MA where the ex-lover worked, and the relationship had been super-discreet since Bennett was married. There were other specific details that I can't remember. At the time, I was shocked to hear this news. While my friend had never exaggerated or told me untrue information, I had never heard anyone else with a similar rumor, so I just assumed that the ex-lover had lied. But I've always remembered the story, more than 50 years later.

by Anonymousreply 116July 21, 2023 9:31 PM

IIRC Frank Sinatra rated him as the best "saloon singer", high praise from Ol' Blue Eyes.

I liked TB's style & voice, sincere, mellow, no theatrics, just get on stage, sing it and get off.

Seemed to be a genuine, nice guy, to my knowledge never a whiff of scandal or being a 'diva.' RIP, Mr. Bennett

You know, except for some of the trolls, I'd rather be here talking about TOny BEnnett than watching the tributes on CNN and other networks. They "reporters" are mostly young and stupid. Uninformed. As if they didn't bother to talk to anyone who could explain to them who he really was or what he meant. And God help them when they get into a discussion about his dementia and they're trying to explain how his Alzheimer's affected him. it. So far the only one who does him credit, and I hate admitting this, is Anderson.

by Anonymousreply 122July 22, 2023 1:55 AM

In one of the Streisand bios a Columbia record executive described the differences between how Barbra and Tony recorded. Barbra wanted every note and phrase polished to perfection, while Tony was a much looser and alive: When asked after recording one number, Bennett was asked if he wanted to do another. "No. That take felt good, baby. Print it."

Only on the DL do people brag about being ignorant (R146).

You're forgetting about all the MAGAts who brag about being ignorant.

I loved the unchanged silver-blue tone to his voice and its power. He had an almost feminine way of putting a song across. I live in the neighborhood he grew up in-- the restaurant where he worked as a singing waiter as a young man closed during the pandemic, and is still sitting with boarded up windows and (if not original, decades old) signage. There's also a charming depiction of him in street art near the train station. I was lucky enough to see his last performance ever, with Lady Gaga at the Radio City Music Hall two years ago. I was on edge knowing of his Alzheimer's but I needn't have worried. Having had the pleasure of hearing the last of the great crooners in person is something I'll always be grateful for.

R137 Lady Gaga released a statement saying it was long and thick.

by Anonymousreply 157July 31, 2023 4:47 PM

R80 Crosby didn't think so.

Bing said "Sinatra has a voice that comes along once in a lifetime. Why did it have to be mine?"

by Anonymousreply 158July 31, 2023 5:39 PM

Even in his Tommy Dorsey crooner days, I never thought Crosby and Sinatra sounded remotely alike.

Perry Como is another matter. He had Crosby's voice and style down cold.

by Anonymousreply 159July 31, 2023 5:42 PM

R137, some time co-star Lena Horne wasn't interested in the slightest.

R159, it's like Garland and Streisand. They didn't sound alike, but Streisand was the next big thing and that brought the talk of similarities to Garland. Perry Como couldn't help that the sound of his voice was like Crosby's, instead of fighting it he embraced it. Como's style wasn't like Crosby's, just his sound.

Perry Como. Now there's a blast from the past. My Granny LOVED Perry Como. At large family gatherings the highest compliment was "He sings like Perry Como." So I went to You tube to find Perry Como. Talk about Bland! He was "a nice Italian boy."

by Anonymousreply 161July 31, 2023 6:13 PM

We had to watch him. His was one of the first (and only) shows on TV in "Living Color" and my grandmother bought us a color TV when they first came out.

My brother called him "Perry Homo."

by Anonymousreply 163July 31, 2023 6:25 PM

Perry Como was bland, that's what made him a good radio and TV host. Crosby too (on stage). Sinatra was a terrible host - too irritating.

by Anonymousreply 164July 31, 2023 6:40 PM

The timbre of Como's voice was considerably lighter than Crosby's. If I heard a recording by one of them that I didn't know, I would never mistake one for the other.

by Anonymousreply 165July 31, 2023 7:32 PM

R166, I mostly agree, although Como's voice could be almost as rich as Crosby's on certain numbers.

To me the biggest different is tempo. Como wasn't always "sleepy", but when he was sleepy, he was comatose. Here's his 1949 recording of "Blue Room" - a lovely song and a pretty recording, but holy shit it's positively funereal in pace. I don't think Crosby ever slowed down quite this much, even on gentle ballads.

R166, we'd like to know who you're talking to, unless your post is meant to be to yourself.

by Anonymousreply 167August 1, 2023 8:02 PM

Well, I often do talk to myself, but in fact it was meant for R165.
