Is the 1996 version really that bad?

I haven't seen the 1996 series, but the 2012 is pretty awful in spite of some good actors like Linus Roache and Toby Jones. Julian Fellowes' script is even worse than the ones for his recent Downton Abbey movies.

I thought the romance in the 1996 one was more convincing than the one in the 1996 movie.

And Eva Marie Saint was fun as a gossipy busybody

But the '96 series has Mike Doyle, who especially back then was quite the beauty.

Marilu Henner was terrible as Maggie Brown…so cartoonish. But her husband was the director and producer, wasn’t he?
