Thoughts on pitbulls?
John Thompson
I've heard so many strong opinions for and against pitbulls that I'm not sure what to think. Now my brother wants to rescue one, and my mom is convinced it will maul him.
What are your thoughts, DL?
| by Anonymous | reply 140 | August 12, 2023 2:35 PM |
Depends on how you feel about your brother
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 13, 2023 3:22 AM |
The loud opinions FOR pitbulls come from two categories: those who own them in order to look like a badass and the others have a lion-tamer complex where they think that they're just sweet and misunderstood and that only the ones who are mistreated act up violently.
Both are awful people and are ignoring the stats. Both groups have found their pitbulls to 'suddenly' attack and act differently for no reason. Both groups are selfish in their thinking - one wanting to show how badass they are, the other thinking only they know how to raise this breed and that they have some special love and skill to override the genetics and dispositions of this breed.
A rescue pit bull is like playing Russian roulette - they were rescued because they were probably abused and mistreated by group A. Also, a lot of pits that are sent to rescue are the ones who 'suddenly change' - they may not have even been abused.
Of all the dogs that need homes, I have to ask why specifically you would choose a pit bull and what you get out of it. I'm betting your brother falls into one of the two groups I described.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 13, 2023 3:24 AM |
There are groups who "rescue" pitbulls. Let them have em, OP.
What's your brother trying to prove? There's many breeds and mutts that make more reliable family dogs. I know people who have pitties and love them and swear they're sweet and I've never had any problems visiting - but sweet doesn't mean even-tempered. They are terriers, giant terriers at that, after all.

R3 My brother does have hobbies like Crossfit and watching UFC. He's otherwise easygoing and not in your face about it, but I've also suspected it's about the toughness image. He swears he doesn't want a guard dog, though.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 13, 2023 3:41 AM |
R4. That's to do with improper owners, not just the breed itself.
Pit bulls are great. You have to know what you're doing though.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 13, 2023 3:41 AM |
One doesn't have to think about this subject deeply to realize that news stories of pitbull attacks are too common, and the details of the maulings are always horrific. They involve innocent people going about their lives, e.g., a UPS driver, a woman taking a walk, a neighbor working in their yard...everyday situations where a person's life suddenly ends tragically or suddenly turns into a long-term ICU nightmare with an unknown future.
I said this on another thread, but another harrowing part of these attacks is that the victim's loved ones don't at least have the peace of knowing their loved one didn't suffer before they died. They have to live with the knowledge that their loved one suffered horrifically, and I don't want to even imagine what that feels like.
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 13, 2023 3:54 AM |
If you value your life, OP, and don’t wish to play Russian Roulette, no to Pitbulls.
I worked for a vet before going on to med school and into surgery.
Saw both sides of the coin, and I would never allow myself or loved ones to go near them. Despite what many owners will vehemently say, they are too UNPREDICTABLE.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 13, 2023 4:04 AM |
R4's only list deaths - which is a horrific, unimaginable way to die. The amount of attacks on people and other dogs are another stat and it is much higher.
Obviously not everyone who is attacked by a pit bull dies - that's a small number in R4's stats, even though it's a shockingly high amount.
You have to ask your brother the reasons why he wants to adopt one. It's fashionable for young people to do this and it's all for the wrong reasons.
I had a neighbor across the hall rescue a pit bull. He thought I was crazy when I was hesitant to approach him and the dog. Flash forward six weeks and he said - in a shocked voice - that the dog tried to bite him and was all of a sudden aggressive. He returned the dog - BUT he would NOT admit that it was the breed.
That's the worst part of ALL pit bull owners - they REFUSE to believe it was the breed. Something must have happened - YOU must have done something. It's NEVER the dog's fault and that's the most disgusting and slap-worthy defensive behavior.
Pit bull owners NEVER think they're wrong. It's a fucking cult like thinking. It really is.

Pitbulls kill. I always cross the street when I see someone walking a large dog with a strong jaw. I avoid the people who own them and the ethnic communities where you're more likely to find them.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 13, 2023 4:15 AM |
I am sure some of them are fine pets, but the reality is they are exceptionally strong animals, and if they are set off, they can easily cause significant bodily damage and/or kill you. The people who are obsessed with them are mostly insecure men and emotionally retarded young women.

Thirty years ago..we had a. pitbull and it played with the adult deer in our area. Our Amazon parrot rode around on his back.
Since the we moved to a different state and live in a quiet neighbrohood. The Amazon plays with another pitbull that lives next door. They are friends. The pitbull licks our parrot.

99% of those doggies probably go through their lives with no incidents. But of all the breeds that you hear about attacking people and dogs...it's always pitbulls. Or Staffordshires, in areas where pitbulls are banned.
But OP, Crossfit and UFC? Ofc he's using the dog as a penis stand-in.

I am a personal injury attorney currently litigating a case over a three year-old who was mauled by a pitbull.
If you continue to keep a pitbull after it mauled your neighbor’s child, you are no better than a woman who stays with her boyfriend after watching him molest a child. You’re even worse when you continue to sneak the pitbull over after the landlord has role you to not bring it around anymore or you’ll be evicted.

Even though all of the many pit bulls I've met over the years have been sweet, lovable jelly belly goofballs, I still would never own one. For one, I have a strict rule never to own an animal that I'm not strong enough to control if worse came to worse. Also, most of the attack stories say the dogs were perfect angels their entire life and just went ape on their family for no apparent reason. You can't train that out of a dog.
There are so many good dogs in all shapes, sizes, and temperaments waiting to be adopted. Why obsess over this one breed?
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 13, 2023 8:44 AM |
Pitbulls raised and socialized to be good dogs are exactly that, good dogs. Pitbulls raised to be mean are exactly that, mean. And unfortunately an inordinately large percentage of people who get pitbulls want their dog to be mean.

R25 - bullshit. What about all the pitbulls who were 'raised right' who suddenly attack? The presumption is that every pit bull who has attacked was somehow abused and that's just not the case.
This is the lion-tamer complex type of thinking. Oh - if only they were raised by the right people (like ME) then nothing will happen.
And then time after time, these people have Pikachu faces when they attack another dog or get suddenly aggressive.
People like R25 are the problem.

R23, you don’t regard child molesters as animals?
Child molesters have natural instincts too. Why don’t they deserve love? You don’t know what kind of experience they had as children, whether they were sexually abused, etc.
You wouldn’t say a scorpion or venomous snake deserves love.
Neither does a pit bull that has attacked an innocent person.

OP, there are lots of people here who loathe them.
My experience with them has been largely positive, but you/your brother need to consider a few things.
One, they are dogs that need an experienced and/or knowledgable owner, as with any other similar dog with the capacity to attack (e.g. Doberman). Many aggressive pit bulls were raised to be that way or were never properly socialized.
It's also good to know as much as possible, when possible, about their parents - if the dog being adopted is a puppy.
Some pits are a bit inbred - these are the "blue nose" grayish pits and they can have lots of issues and be very high strung.
My sister had a beautiful, sweet pit mix for years. That dog was about 75 percent pit and 25 percent Lab and she was a sweetheart. But she was trained and socialized and even with that, my sister was very careful about where she was walked and kept her separated from other big dogs.
If your brother is getting a shelter dog he needs to be ready to dedicate most of the next year to that dog's training and socialization, and he may also have to register the dog with the city/county.
I love the look of pits and know they can be good dogs, but there's a lot that goes into that, and if your brother just wants a big beefy dog and isn't responsible, he should really not own one.

The roots of Miami-Dade’s pit bull ban was growing anxiety and social tension about Cuban immigration.
When Denver, CO placed its ban on Pit Bulls after whites moved out and Latinos moved in, a move that “dramatically changed the population of the city”.
When Aurora, CO, enacted a ban on Pit Bulls, one of the commissioners stated that she did not want “those sorts of people” (the perceived owners of Pit Bulls) moving into her community.
New York City — then-Mayor Ed Koch sought similar measures in New York City and he did not do so because of evidence that the dogs were dangerous but because “of who was thought to own them” — see above parenthetical.
Sterling Heights, MI — once a sundown town (a form of segregation by excluding non-whites via some combination of discriminatory local laws, intimidation, and violence) — a supporter of the Pit Bull ban called it necessary because: “We have inner-city people who bought homes here.”
Ellenville, NY — these officials didn’t even bother using coded language. They wanted BSL to address the growing number “of Mexicans moving into the community.”

It’s a little of each of these stories, OP. Disregard both extremes. I’ve had several (20? I’m over 60) dogs over the years, almost all mixed breed, all rescues. Currently have two senior dogs, one pit bull, one a pit/Vizsla mix. They are both very strong, and given to aggression. That said, I’ve had (only early on) to break up their fights with other dogs in my household over the years, and eventually separate the cats from them as well. I can handle them, and they know I’m the top dog (important concept). They have never fought with each other. I would agree with those here who say they’re not for everyone, and they need strong training from an experienced hand. I would not recommend many people attempt to raise one if they don’t know the dog’s history, or are not experienced in training dogs. Before I took these two in, I would frequently get attacked by stray/unrestrained pits in the neighborhood while walking my other dogs. Their owners were completely irresponsible and/or not present. My two seniors currently don’t need the exercise or socialization because they have each other, my family, and a huge yard. I’d advise your brother to think long and hard about it. Talk to others, a pit rescue perhaps, and get an evaluation of his yard. The old show “Pits and Parolees” also taught me a few things. Good luck!

A few facts, even though people prefer to argue for and against these dogs based on their feelings:
Pit bulls were originally bred for bear and bull baiting and later bred to fight other dogs. They’re prone to dog aggression and have a high prey drive. Of course, there’s always the odd dog that doesn’t fit the breed standard, but people need to understand the dog’s origin. Too many idiots get Huskies because of their pretty blue eyes and are surprised when they dig up the yard and escape because they’re bored out of their minds.
They require a lot of physical and mental stimulation, as well as an experienced and firm owner who knows how to train them. Pit bulls also need a lot of socialization from an early age.
There are way too many bad backyard and accidental breeders and very few good breeders who breed pit bulls for temperament. Back in the days, American pit bulls were known to be great family dogs and good with children. Breeding for dog fights, strength, appearance and “viciousness” changed the breed.
Pit bulls and other dangerous dog breeds are very often owned by people who shouldn’t even own a goldfish, because they know nothing about training and socializing a dog.
I’ve had German Shepherds all my life, I’m a very experienced dog owner and I have trained a few difficult dogs for other people, but I would NEVER get a pit bull. And I’ve never met a responsible and experienced dog owner who owns a pit bull. Not saying they don’t exist, I’ve just never met one.
OP, TL;dr, the answer is no.

We’re happily dog racist (as one friend called me). Pitbulls have insane energy levels and l just wait for the day they lash out and their (often white female) owners have no way of controlling them.
I know a couple in the neighborhood that are now way too big, strong, and energetic for their owners. If they’re off leash at a dog park you hear the wailing of “Daaaaaiiiissyyyy” - or whatever grotesque baby name they give them - in a futile attempt to calm them down.
We don’t let our Corgi near them and we have no qualms being very upfront about it. One time we took our dog to a dog birthday party (yes yes MARY!) and my friend’s bf - a Pitbull rescue advocate - had his out there on leash who reacted so strongly to our dog, barking and lunging.
“Oh my gosh! He wasn’t like that with ANY other dog until yours showed up!” - my friend, trying to peace keep between us and her man
That’s all it takes. It’s unpredictable.

Despite others blaming poor training, bad owners, abusive backgrounds, etc….etc…. the one commonality of pitbulls is their unpredictability.
Many will have good experiences with pitbulls, just as many who have exotic pets like lions and tigers can have good experiences.
Yet pitties - like lions, tigers, crocs, etc. - can turn on a dime to anyone.
Know this and be prepared accordingly if you (crazily?) chose to cohabitate with one.

I think anyone who owns one is a complete moron. They are dangerous, unpredictable animals. There are countless stories of people, including small children, being mauled to death. Most of the owners are narcissists who think they're just so special that they can train their dog not to attack. It's in their genes. They're all sweet and loving and gentle...until they're not.

Let’s be frank and honest. Pit bulls are horrible dogs, very capable of maiming and killing people. They can turn in an instant and have the sheer muscle force to take you down, even as the owner. How many more examples of horrific maulings do you need to be convinced?
Second, most pit bull owners are small-dicked beta males, usually low income trash who have no other way to show dominance than to own a mongrel. If they had money, they’d buy a Ferrari, but since they’re poor/trash, they get that type of dog. If you live in a rundown house that has a chain link fence and a toilet or old tire in the yard, then you’re the type to own a pit bull.

Instead, this frail cunt gingerly holds the leash much in the way that she holds a poop bag in the other hand: ready to drop it. It's scary because her dog is massive and lurches a lot. OH BUT IT'S A RESCUE! Yeah, so is my dog, and so we cross the street and avoid her in the park. What could be the reason she doesn't hold the leash in any responsible way other than if he bolts, it would be tragic if he dragged her. But shouldn't he? Shouldn't she take the precaution that at least, if he does bolt and attack, her dead weight might mitigate disaster for others?

Only two dogs ever attempted to attack my dog. Yes, they were both pit bulls. One seemed to fly up off the sidewalk as my dog and I were sitting on my front porch. Fortunately, the dog's owner had such fine control of his dog, the animal stopped in mid-air and backed off.
The other, we crossed each other on the sidewalk, and the dog gets in my dog's face. My dog, a collie/husky mix let that dog know quickly he would kick its ass, and the dog retreated.
No other breed of dog made attack gestures towards my dog in ten years.

Lately I get a lot of IG short videos with cute kitties and dogs. Mixed with the lot are videos from a pitbull IG. They are always making a play on how "scary and violent" they are but showing them being gentle and cute. Often times they will compare the violent tendencies of another dog breed vs. pitbull. I usually scroll past fast ( many of them have a "before you scroll past" note pleading that you stop and look). To be honest when I see a pitbull , think about the usual headlines of how they attacked; other dogs, kids, people etc. When I see them, the owner is usually the tattooed tough guy and bimbo girl type and I immediately think they are dealers. I know as a homo that I shouldn't stereotype people but that's how I feel about them. If a pitbull owner moved in next door I would be extra careful and try to avoid both the dog and the owner. I love animals, I grew up with lots of pet dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and more. I've never had a so called dangerous breed but I have a feeling that pitbulls are always capable of violence and the owners should have to do something extra to make sure that the animal doesn't suddenly go mad and attack.

A woman in my area walks her pit bull....but with a muzzle on the dog. At least she's responsible and careful. Not many people are. I wouldn't want a dog that needed to be muzzled.

How long do they live? A friend of mine adopted one that's part pitbull and part something else (unknown) that's 9 years old and 72 pounds. I walked the dog a few times and it doesn't even bark. it doesn't react to other dogs either.
How long do these breed live? 19 years?

Make pittbulls go extinct.

They're such SWEET animals. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners.

[quote] How long do these breed live? 19 years?
No, 19 years is a very long life for a dog. The smaller the dog, the longer the life expectancy. Pitbulls have a life span of about eight to fifteen years.

The Chicken Littles of the board, our shriekingly nellie prisspots, will tell you that all pitbulls are killers, OP.
The fact is they are, like Dobermans and German Shepherds, dogs that are not for everyone. They can be good pets, but the issue is that the most ideal time to get a pit bull is when it's a puppy, so it can properly bond with its owners and be trained. But so many pit bulls are abandoned and/or given to shelters and THEN adopted, and many of them are never trained properly.
If your brother is an experienced pit bull owner or is willing to spend significant time and money on training, it may work. But if he's unfamiliar with them as a breed or just wants a pit bull because of the way it looks, he should really think twice.
I like them and have known several sweet ones, but I also make no pretense that there's some poorly trained shelter dogs out there, ones that have triggers to attack that may come out at the most random moments.

Thinking of the nightmare I witnessed one Halloween when some little kids knocked on the front door of the house across the street from me, and the owner answered with a bowl of candy and his pit bull standing next to him, the answer is, "No."

Possession of a pit bull should be illegal.

My dog is a black lab pitbull mix. He's exceedingly handsome. Capable of mayhem but super gentle with everybody. He occasionally nips me (no broken skin) when we play, and he immediately shows me his belly and gives me walrus eyes, and licks my hand in apology.
He gets a little worked up because we play games like Social Worker. I tell hiim "I'm a social worker with protective services. You're a bad dog. I'm here with the state and I've come to take your babies." Then I grab a stuffed animal or two, and he leaps at me and chases me around, barking. Then we play tug-o-war with a baby.
Any toy that reminds him of a baby animal, he carries very gingerly in his mouth back and forth to his bed, then licks and grooms it. Then he tears it apart and pulls out all the stuffing, usually starting from the back of the head. OTOH he can catch birds while on a 7 ft leash. He swallows those whole, without chewing.
With children he is very gentle and affectionate, with small licks and gentle moves. But he loves it if they pet him and maul his face and body. He gets very excited and rolls around on the floor, then jumps up and licks them, all very carefully to not bump into anybody.
He loves meat, potatoes, pizza, tacos, chicken nuggets, cake, and pie. He won't eat vegetables or fruit.

I associate pit bulls with angry, toxic people who have something to prove. Toxic masculinity. Overcompensation.
That’s just the first image I have, OP—not saying your brother is like this. It’s just my honest perception.

My friend's pitbull mix dog (72 pounds, 9 years old) jumped over a park bench and he acts like the dog did something miraculous!

With his sleeve tattoo and baseball cap on backward even though he appears to be about 40 years old, I would never have guessed this guy to be a pitbull owner.

I love dogs, but I would never own a pit bull. They can be very docile, but they can also turn on you in an instant for something as simple as a quick move or gesture. You're playing Russian Roulette with this breed.

Years ago, I was dogsitting for a co-worker who had a pitbull. The dog was very friendly and affectionate with me, not at all vicious or scary. One morning, I was taking him for a walk, and he spotted another dog coming the other way. The pitbull took off so fast and so strong and I fell onto the ground when he started running. I held onto his leash, but that dog dragged me a good 30 feet before I could get control of him.
Thankfully, the owner of the other dog saw the pitbull coming and picked up her dog and ran in the other direction. That was an extremely scary moment.

OP, just ignore the people who say pit bulls are just like any other breed, that pit bulls who attack have been mistreated and haven't been trained properly. These people are brainwashed members of a cult. It's pointless to argue with them. It's like trying to convince an antivaxxer that they're wrong.

| by Anonymous | reply 127 | August 11, 2023 3:46 PM |
When pit bulls or pit mixes make up 90% of what's available for adoption, it says a lot. I hate those mean, ugly motherfuckers. I know a guy who posts daily videos of his pit bulls frolicking in the river at a metropark, unleashed. He does indeed match the description of what people think of when it comes to pitty owners.

I think it's hilarious that that chihuahua sized "pit bull" was ID'd as a pit bull by various people. It's a friggin' chihuahua mix.

Do you realise that pit bulls cause six times more deaths than the next breed, Rottweilers? People who choose these dogs are either really ignorant or seriously misinformed or have psychological problems.

R103 Not true. When I was a kid, we got a Belgian Shepherd. She was a beautiful dog, and so affectionate with our family, but whenever strangers would come to the house, she would go nuts and try to attack. The final straw came when the neighbor's dog crawled under a shared fence we had and came into our yard and our Belgian Shepherd killed it.
We had to put her down, and it wasn't until after the fact that we learned this breed is very territorial and will kill to protect its territory.

There is a reason my city's animal shelter is inundated with pitbullls. They are way too wild. If your sibling wants to own this monstrosity there's not much you could do. Just give him information and be on your way. Dalila from the radio had a concerned mom and what she should do because her daughter was in an abusive relationship. Delila said there's not much you could do because the daughter would choose the abuser 100% of the time and that would push her away. All you could do is circle the wagon. Circle the wagon with love and be there for them. We're all adults here after all.
