The Stag Shop

Writer John Thompson

Does anyone here remember The Stag Shop on 8th Street? The go-to men's store for Gays in the late '50s and throughout the 60s? Their catalog was a scream! The way they had to camouflage the description of their clothes so as to let every homo know this was their destination for the Battle of the Bulge. Hilarious couching queer depiction.

I think it closed by 1970

I found this odd page from Jeremiah's Vanishing New York with several comments about The Stag Shop. What's odd about it is that that while the comments all talk about someone filming a walk across 8th Street from Broadway to Sixth in the early 70s, there is nothing about that in the actual post. It's as if the comments are about a different post. Jeremiah's Vanishing New York used to be one of my very favorite blogs but the owner stopped updating it except for rare occasions several years ago. I think he just got too depressed to keep commenting about the destruction of this once wonderful city.

I moved to New York in '74 and remember older friends mentioning The Stag Shop but I never saw it. As mentioned above, it must have had a largely gay clientele but you wouldn't advertise a commercial business that way, I remember 8th Street as having store after store of discount shoe shops were you could find really good quality and stylish shoes at fantastic prices if you were willing to put a little time into it.
