the song "Gloria"

I don't get it. Why is a woman singing about Gloria?

You really don't remember?

We've done this already....
Song "Gloria" was by Italian singer Umberto Tozzi. Laura Branigan did a cover in English, but as wont to happen lyrics don't translate easily, and of course it was now a woman singing a song about another woman.

Lyrics in original Italian, and translated into English. As you can see cover by LB is not anything like original except for word "Gloria".

she did the same in self control. im convinced its about a gay man who goes to the wrong side of town to go clubbing and fuck but then she did the cover.

I miss Laura Branigan. Class act. She stepped away from music to take care of her sick husband. Sadly, she died too young.

I always thought she was calling out a slutty friend of hers. Like, Gloria is just a booty call.
Do I need to listen to this song now?

Gloria was a huge hit in Italy and few other parts of Europe at the time, no wonder LB wanted to do a cover for US market. Picked up a 78 single at some record shop in Manhattan NYC's Little Italy back in 1980's that recently found stashed among LPs.
Few Americans outside those of Italian background knew then nor know now that Umberto Tozzi did the original, and LB's was only a cover version.
Gloria joins a not small list of European songs covered by Americans or British singers where translations are rather fast and lose with original words.
Heir Encore (French) became Yesterday When I Was Young.
Uno dei Tanti (Italian) became I Who Have Nothing

The best cover of Gloria is the Frangela jingle as performed by Rocky Mountain Mike's epic singers on the Stephanie Miller Show. It's ptetty funny.

Laura had a big problem with cocaine.

Really?? Can you share more? She was the first concert I ever attended. At the Cape Cod Melody Tent when Self Control was huge.

Forget Gloria, what about Maria? Who was that bitch? And why was Debbie singing about her?

Tom Jones milked 'I Who Have Nothing" for every bit of schmaltzy feeling he could get.

Umberto Tozzi getting down with yet another live performance of "Gloria".
Again it cannot be said too often how huge a hit this song was in Italy.

Royal Albert Hall! Who knew there were so many Italians in England?

I always thought Laura Branigan’s version was Gloria talking to herself, ie self-reflection. She’s realized she’s out of control and needs to change course. It’s the antithesis of 1980s women, where everything was in extreme with big shoulders and big hair.
Gloria, you're always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you've got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you're headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it

Loved Patti Smith's "Gloria" (which is a completely different song). I can handle any abuse thrown my way for that. Count me in the minority who loathed the Branigan song, which just conjures up leg warmers, metallic leotards, and jam-packed aerobics classes for me.

R22, yes. The song brought them good luck as they won the Stanley Cup that year. Brannigan's former manager showed up for Branigan.

I agree, r21. I always thought the song was about a woman named Gloria who was singing to herself.

Umberto Tozzi has so many beautiful, catchy hit songs, and this is one of my favorite.
