Why did Dwayne Johnson become mega-famous, but John Cena didn't?

They both have amazing bodies, both are former pro wrestlers, and they both have big personalites. However, Cena is way better looking than The Rock.

Being a movie star in the US is not a matter of who is the hottest. It's a matter of many, many other things, including personality, charisma, and talent.

John Cena has all these things, but not quite at the level of The Rock.

I would argue that Cena is just as famous (perhaps through ridiculous memes) but just hasn't had the same acting career. The Rock can seem to act passably well. Cena can play Cena, which is fine, but it isn't on the level of the Rock.

I'm a big fan of action films and enjoy both as performers. Johnson is better at elevating his material and seems to have a broader (and more specific) vision for his career in general. The Condemned (starring Steve Austin) remains the best WWE film. The Run Down is a close second.

Cena is going to be the Suicide Squad sequel and those crappy superhero movies really bank, and Fast & Furious 9 , which also does very well at the box office for some reason, so his acting career has taken an upturn. He was more devoted to wrestling and being the company man for WWE than The Rock was before to put his full attention on acting.

I think the question should be: Is there room for more than one former wrestler superstar? Jason Momoa and John Cena are at the same level of "celebrity" while the Rock is at the top.

I would argue The Rock is way better at his social/digital footprint than the other two. That definitely helps a little bit when it comes to success of films in the first weekend.

John & Dwayne both reached a point that their biceps look weird. Perhaps the steroids did them in, but they look lumpy and bloated instead of tight and peaked.

The Rock is a better performer and his diversity has actually helped his appeal to audiences.

Cena also has appeal but he’s bland as a leading man and too generic to be much otherwise beyond generic hunk.

Both guys are hot but without a doubt The Rock is MUCH hotter. He's more handsome and sexy. He's also a jack of all trades. He has charisma to burn. He can act, wrestle, bodybuild and sing. Cena is the lesser white version.

I also hate Cena's buzz cut that looks fucked up. He looks better with longer hair.

The Rock was really hot 20 years ago when he first became famous. He was always funny onstage in WWF but when he did SNL, that's when people took notice, he was really funny in the skits, smart and could actually act. Cena had his chance with that Amy Schumer movie but he was portrayed as a dumb jock.

The Rock is more of a "personality", which is what made him bigger than John. John is arguably more real, he doesn't waste time doing schtick for his fanbase or for audiences. He's always himself. The Rock is a barbie doll. He is a character. He can say the right thing, play up the right stories and appeal to the right people. He's the kind of plastic that Hollywood loves because its emptiness makes it lucrative. John Cena doesn't put on the act, and thus he isn't as marketable. He hasn't made himself into a brand in the way that The Rock has.

I have to say the Rock is a hard working guy and also very smart, with the little acting gigs he was offered in the beginning, he actually learned from the experiences and developed his skill as an actor. I have no doubt he hired acting coaches and studied the acting. For entertainers who already made a name for themselves, it's not easy to forgo their massive ego, be humble in hollywood and reach out for movie roles and get used to rejections from directors and studios.

The Rock had a major following like no one else since Hulk Hogan and Macho Man. Everyone loved him and he was able to crossover easily because of his super large fan base all over the world.

Cena is cool but The Rock is many straight boys fav wrestler. And he appeals to all, white, black etc. they like him.

John Cena mostly appeals to gays and women.

The Rock is indisputably hot as hell. He is only a superstar because everyone wants to fuck him. He is charming, charismatic and can be funny onscreen. But mostly he's just super-hot.

You can always count on the f@gs of Datalounge to exalt the most mediocre of white dudes. Cena looks like Matt Damon on steroids, attractive but ordinary. Not even in the same universe as The Rock.

The Rock is a better actor than Cena. Cena is good, but the Rock handles comedy or anything else thrown at him with ease. If Cena got more experience in film, especially comedies, I think he would get to the Rock's level, but he started out with those idiotic Marine themed movies.

Cena by far. The "off the set" bits I've seen of The Rock lead me to believe he's not that nice in private. Cena is a sweetheart. He just pledged a half million dollars to help the firefighters out in California. He seems like a good and decent guy.
