Go Nathan! Straight up, Evan Lysacek was the last US male to win Olympics gold in 2010
| by Anonymous | reply 591 | February 20, 2022 9:48 PM |
Yay! Chloe Kim won the gold
| by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 10, 2022 4:07 AM |
So it’s possible Nathan Chen could be the first figure skater to win two Olympic gold medals on the same day?
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 10, 2022 4:08 AM |
I know it's only the second Olympics to allow music with vocals, but some of these song choices are making me long for a return to the days of instrumentals only. Muse & Daft Punk were nice choices though.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 10, 2022 4:13 AM |
Hanyu is SHITTING THE BED.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 10, 2022 4:17 AM |
That Hanyu program just died on the vine
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 10, 2022 4:22 AM |
Do the men HAVE to all wear black pants? Maybe some nice slate grey or navy?
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 10, 2022 4:22 AM |
R2, Were the Russians DQed?
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 10, 2022 4:23 AM |
Poor Hanyu, he won’t repeat. 🥺
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 10, 2022 4:24 AM |
All these long programs so far suck—mainly because no one has any sense of fluidity and artistry. And lots of falling
Hanyu does have artistry but he gave up early
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 10, 2022 4:24 AM |
Don’t skaters usually choose music of the hosting country? I’m not hearing any Chinese tunes
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 10, 2022 4:25 AM |
Semenenko is SHITTING THE BED.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 10, 2022 4:25 AM |
I miss Elvis Stojko and Phillippe Candeloro.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 10, 2022 4:26 AM |
Nathan Chen talks way too fast—like he’s a little autistic
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 10, 2022 4:29 AM |
Haha, r15. No. Poster said Nathan could win Gold #2 today. Not possible if the Russian team isn't disqualified.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 10, 2022 4:30 AM |
Vocals should never have been allowed. If you can't emote without them then you should lose.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 10, 2022 4:31 AM |
R17, and they won't be disqualified. They get away with it time and time again.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 10, 2022 4:32 AM |
Will Nathan fix his teeth after the Olympics?
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 10, 2022 4:37 AM |
Is Nathan Chen skating to Star Trek? That's what his costume looks like.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 10, 2022 4:38 AM |
There's only one non-Asian skater in the finals?
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 10, 2022 4:39 AM |
R21 He's skating to an Elton John medley. Free Skating: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocket Man, Bennie and the Jets (all from "Rocket Man") by Elton John, Bernie Taupin
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 10, 2022 4:39 AM |
Okay. The costume is still ugly.
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 10, 2022 4:42 AM |
Yeah, I'm sure astronauts in space can see Nathan in that shirt.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 10, 2022 4:44 AM |
OMG, what is Johnny Weir wearing?!
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 10, 2022 4:45 AM |
The black collar sticking out makes it worse.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 10, 2022 4:45 AM |
The Georgian skater is handsome.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 10, 2022 4:47 AM |
I surmised it was a Chanel jacket.
It’s beautiful.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 10, 2022 4:48 AM |
Is anyone watching with commentary? Or is the live feed commentary free?
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 10, 2022 4:48 AM |
[Quote] No. Poster said Nathan could win Gold #2 today. Not possible if the Russian team isn't disqualified.
Thanks, Mr Obvious
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 10, 2022 4:52 AM |
Wow, all the men skaters so far SUCK
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 10, 2022 4:52 AM |
R30, I’m watching on NBC and it has commenting as usual
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 10, 2022 4:52 AM |
R23, Nathan gets the spectators energized when he segues into "Bennie and the Jets." I think this medley is his most dynamic.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 10, 2022 4:54 AM |
Then why did that poster say it? That's why I asked, Jerk.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 10, 2022 4:55 AM |
Another one bites the dust
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 10, 2022 4:55 AM |

| by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 10, 2022 4:56 AM |
[Quote] Then why did that poster say it? That's why I asked, Jerk.
The poster said that it could be a possibility (if the Russians are disqualified—was understood by anyone following the Olympics)
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 10, 2022 4:56 AM |
The Korean’s butt is too filled with Brian Orser’s cum. It’s off balance
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 10, 2022 4:57 AM |
Once someone falls, the rest of the routine is usually lifeless
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 10, 2022 4:58 AM |
Pavorotti singing Nessum Dorma. Love. It was actually his last public performance at the opening ceremony of th 2006 Winter Olympics

Brian Orser has gotten fat.

Saw him in "Turandot" at the Met just for that song. Love it and his version.
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 10, 2022 5:01 AM |
R41, kind of pathetic to play fake Chinese music during a routine in China
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 10, 2022 5:02 AM |
What time will Chen skate?
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 10, 2022 5:02 AM |

| by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 10, 2022 5:02 AM |
R33, just switched over. I don't like Tara and Johnny, but watching without commentary feels off to me.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 10, 2022 5:02 AM |
R42, that’s hunky, not fat
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 10, 2022 5:02 AM |
R42, Orser has BEEN fat. Where have you been?
| by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 10, 2022 5:03 AM |
Jason Brown now in 3rd. Enjoy your moment, Jason. You are special.
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 10, 2022 5:04 AM |
I went to a US Figure Skating champion a few years ago. It was boring as fuck. Can you imagine having to sit through 20 of these routines??
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 10, 2022 5:04 AM |
Uggh, I hated Elvis Stojko. Ferret face.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 10, 2022 5:04 AM |
Is the general guidance for men’s routines “just fling arms around”?
| by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 10, 2022 5:06 AM |
This is shades of the Women's event in 1992... splat fest in finals.
| by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 10, 2022 5:07 AM |
R55, LOL, I remember that well
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 10, 2022 5:08 AM |
R51, I have relatives who live in Salt Lake and they said they same thing about the figure skating in 2002. Really boring. They loved short track speed skating though.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 10, 2022 5:09 AM |
First Olympics with no figures r55 and it was supposed to be a jump fest with ito, Harding and yamaguchi. It’s been awhile but didn’t lu Chen have the best program of the night.
| by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 10, 2022 5:11 AM |
Here's the little cutie Kagiyama.
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 10, 2022 5:11 AM |
I generally hate all the commentary, so much so that I didn't watch any of the 2020 Summer or 2018 Winter Olympics. But working from home and not having much to do these days, I tuned in. I'm surprised at the coverage. While the snowboarding (and all its variations) commentary is awful, the figure skating commentary has been very restrained, especially while they are skating. As, I haven't seen many of those "personal stories" segments that made past Olympics unwatchable (for me).
| by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 10, 2022 5:12 AM |
I actually miss the personal stories!
| by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 10, 2022 5:13 AM |
R62, I agree. Weir and Lipinski are pretty good.
| by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 10, 2022 5:13 AM |
All being tripled and doubled
| by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 10, 2022 5:14 AM |
I want to see a long spread eagle like Kwan used to do at emotional high points.
| by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 10, 2022 5:15 AM |
I think all of this quad shit has killed the beauty of figure skating. There's barely any artistry anymore. They're all too concerned and nervous about staying on their feet and not crashing to the ice like a sack of potatoes.
| by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 10, 2022 5:16 AM |
Kagiyama is terrific! Not perfect, but terrific!
| by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 10, 2022 5:16 AM |
R58, yup. Lu Chen was in the second to last group and was the surprise of the night. She had the cleanest skate and landed 6 or 7 triples.
Kristi's was the least flawed in the final by not falling, but putting her hand down.
| by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 10, 2022 5:17 AM |
Sadly, artistry has compelled been pushed aside for more jumps, especially quads.
| by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 10, 2022 5:17 AM |
Agreed, r67. And the quad is poised to invade Women's FS.
| by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 10, 2022 5:17 AM |
Dammit, Jim, I’m an ice skater not a space engineer!!
| by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 10, 2022 5:18 AM |
Nathan, this is your moment. Don’t crash and the gold is yours!
| by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 10, 2022 5:18 AM |
If/when Chen wins, he'll be the first Asian American Male to win Gold for the US... 30 years after Kristi Yamaguchi was the first male or female to do it.
| by Anonymous | reply 74 | February 10, 2022 5:18 AM |
That Yagi is just too adorable for words.
| by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 10, 2022 5:19 AM |
I hope Nathan isn’t on steroids!!
| by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 10, 2022 5:20 AM |
R74, and sadly, Kristi didn’t get many deals afterwards specifically because she was Asian Americans. She had to tour around wearing an American flag outfit to remind us she was indeed American
| by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 10, 2022 5:22 AM |
Nathan is obviously a phenomenal jumper, but I find him and his program boring.
| by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 10, 2022 5:23 AM |
The program is put together well—he just build it emotionally like Michelle Kwan used to
| by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 10, 2022 5:24 AM |

Go, Nathan! I’ll buy a Wheaties box with your face on it
| by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 10, 2022 5:25 AM |
R78 it was the height of American/Japanese tensions. Kerrigan ended up getting more endorsements after 1992, as the Bronze medalist.
Things didn't get any better for Michelle Kwan in 1998. American press routinely referred to her in ways that made her seem like she was not American, but an "other."
| by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 10, 2022 5:25 AM |
After Kwan won the World Championship, a newspaper headline said something like “Kwan wins; American takes silver!”
| by Anonymous | reply 89 | February 10, 2022 5:29 AM |
Speaking of Yamaguchi, she really didn't get enough credit as a skater. All the buzz was around Ito and Harding as the technical stars, but Kristi wasn't a slouch. Her jump list in 1992 held up for over 20 years... and even still, 20 year after her, not many women were doing Triple Lutz/Triple Toe.
| by Anonymous | reply 90 | February 10, 2022 5:30 AM |

I don't think he deserved it because of how he behaves in a steam room!

Chen should have been deducted points for the knock off star trek shirt from Walmart. Did he pay a designer to come up with that?
In any case, very happy for him. After NBC hyping him so much, I was worried the jinx was on.
| by Anonymous | reply 119 | February 10, 2022 6:04 AM |
I was so worried Chen would come down with a case of the twisties! I didn't need to worry though since I wasn't putting an effort into it.
| by Anonymous | reply 120 | February 10, 2022 6:08 AM |
Thrilled for Chen. He worked so hard (so did every other olympic skater, of course--but he had the ability and the talent to build to a gold.
| by Anonymous | reply 121 | February 10, 2022 6:34 AM |
I have to say it's very nice to see these young guys being supoortive of gays. Birk Ruud who got gold in freestyle skiing had painted nails. I don't think he is gay as he follows a ton of beautiful women on Insta, but still. He is probably an ally. Same with another Norwegian skier who won I think it was silver in X-Games. He isn't competing in the Olympics. Anyways, he has the rainbow flag as his profile pic on Insta. I don't think he is gay either as he follows a ton of beautiful women, but he's probably an ally. It makes me happy to see these young athletes being so supportive of the gay community. Gives me hope for the future.

I liked Nathan’s costumes. The tux for his short program and the shirt for the free.
They are different, yet sleek: fitting for his physique and demeanour.
Prefer them to all the rhinestoney, ticky-tacky stuff seen on many skaters. Blech.
| by Anonymous | reply 123 | February 10, 2022 6:46 AM |
Ok so I’m not crazy. This is the 2008 Summer opening ceremonies.
It’s the same exact program as the 2022 opening program.

R134 Yes, thanks to Johaug. She is impressive. Finally a favorite who doesn't underperform like so many of our other athletes. A surprise silver from Kilde today was nice too. A gold and silver yesterday, and the same today. Hope this will be the start of a turning point for us. We went 3 days without a gold medal, which was sad.

A suicide watch for Hanyu?
| by Anonymous | reply 146 | February 10, 2022 6:52 PM |
R146, no, I think Hanyu will be ok. Maybe eventually he’ll be able to leave the house without bodyguards and live a more normal life. But no question he’s changed the sport throughout Asia - there are millions of more skating fans not just in Japan but also in China, Korea, and throughout Asia that started tuning in for him and maybe now will keep watching for others. I think Johnny Weir also had that kind of impact- he’s modern, doesn’t feel stuck in a past era.
| by Anonymous | reply 147 | February 10, 2022 8:17 PM |
"I think all of this quad shit has killed the beauty of figure skating. There's barely any artistry anymore."
Artistry = subjectivity, and people hate subjectivity deciding the outcome in sports, even if they like the sport. The scoring changes to figure skating and gymnastics alter the balance between technical skill and artistry compared to previous eras/scoring systems. There's still an artistic component to both sports, but it's been deemphasized. And I think most fans who basically only watch during the Olympics (and there's a lot of those fans) like that. "He landed 5 quads and didn't fall, the other guy only landed 4, and the other guy landed 4, but fell on his triple axel - so they should be gold, silver, bronze in that order." People like it to make sense, even if it a judged sport will never completely make sense. Olympics average-guy/gal watcher doesn't care about overall artistry. It's seen a vehicle for favoritsm, elitism, even corruption.
| by Anonymous | reply 148 | February 10, 2022 9:40 PM |
R148, I think there’s more to it than that- people don’t want it to be just a jumping contest in the sense that many figure skating fans aren’t particularly fans of skiing or curling or other non-artistic sports. I would compare it to playing the piano- there are a lot of elements where you can be technically perfect in figure skating- you don’t stumble on your steps, your spins are fast and centered, you have great speed across the ice, your movements reflect a well-rehearsed performance. It’s not just jumps.
| by Anonymous | reply 149 | February 10, 2022 9:57 PM |
R40, in the short program yes, a fall is enough to ruin it. But the free has so many more jumping passes that I think one fall doesn’t necessarily distract so much. The falls aren’t really more distracting to me than the other significant mistakes, near falls and hand down, etc. I’d rather have one fall and the rest clean than have several jumps look on the messy side.
| by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 10, 2022 10:08 PM |
R148 I’m one of those once-every-four-years fans. I started watching unaware of any scoring changes and had never heard of most of the competitors.
But even this amateur viewer picked up early on that a lot of the routines consisted of setting up the next jump.
Don’t get me wrong - I’ve always loved the jumps as they were where the potential for drama (I.e. a fall) was.
But when to my eyes it looks as though the goal is to fit in as many jumps as possible, they kind of lose their currency. To me, before any experts pile on.
On a side note - I’m assuming that Kamila Valieva is as tiny as the other female skaters, but that she just has very long legs in proportion to the rest of her? I’m aware of the doping test failure but assume that this is just how she’s built, not evidence of anything else.
Amateur viewer now signing out.
| by Anonymous | reply 151 | February 10, 2022 10:20 PM |
R151, women have their strongest size to strength ratio right before puberty hits. Basically what Eteri (the Russian coach and the Cruella de Ville of skating) does is gets these girls, get them to jump and then gets them to starve long enough to stave off the puberty growth spurt. Once they hit puberty and get hips, their jumps are gone. So we get one-season stars and then a new one the next year.
Valieva's long legs are partly a sign of her not being fully grown, though I'm sure she'll always be on the relatively leggy side, but think about what a 12-13 year old girl looks like.
Anyway, when the doping thing came out about Valieva, I thought "Oh, of course." Because the drug she used increases stamina and if you're starving yourself to stave off adolescence, where is the stamina to do a quad in the second half of a long program coming from?
Now we know and it's just a question of how extensive the doping is among the Eteri bots.

R151 You're welcome. I'm glad I can discuss it on DL. Golden Skate is the big figure skating forum and they've fucking banned discussing the doping situation. Like, are you kidding me? It's, by far, the biggest skating story right now, given the implications for women's figure skating for the last 10 years. (Much as I admire Nathan's coming back for the Gold, the 18-year-old Japanese kid and Hanyu trying the quad axel.)

R127 He had a cleanish program with the most difficult jumps - but god his skating is so ugly. All I see a little, jerky, spastic movements with stiff limbs. His neck and back area look weird, he needs to stretch his body more. He cannot hold an edge. The program is snooze with random music cuts. He only comes alive in the step sequence AFTER finishing all the jumps but then gives too much and overdoes it, it’s kind of tacky. The score is ridiculous but I guess this is what happens when the US media is willing to invest money to have their next figure skating ‘star ‘.

I had heard that they weren't mentioning her name because she's a minor, so I guess that still applies to why they're still quiet about it.

This is an even better article from Business Insider, which talks about Valieva’s notorious coach, Eteri Tutberidze, and how her “methods” work until her female skaters are seventeen. Then, their careers are invariably ended by major injuries. Essentially, Valieva is running out of time no matter what.

R125 Only the executed jump layout of Nathan’s program was on another level. Yuma Kagiyama, the 19-year-old kid from Japan who won Silver, had much better flow (in his skating as well as in and out of jump), edge quality and knee bend. Nathan skates with very stiff knees.

[quote] However, Russian figure skaters have tested positive for numerous other banned substances. A Russian skater had to withdraw from a World Championship in 2016 after testing positive for meldonium, a heart medication used by athletes to speed up their recoveries after training. According to the most recently available data published by the World Anti-Doping Agency for the year 2019, the only skater with an adverse result was Russian figure skater Maria Sotskova. She tested positive for a banned diuretic, often used as a masking agent for other substances. Hormone blockers, such as leuprolide, have been banned for athletes since 2005. Use of such drugs among Russian female figure skaters has been documented; athletes are sometimes told it's the only way to preserve their aerodynamic shape and extend their competitive careers.
These people are truly evil, doping up these kids like that. And it sounds like they have the covering up down to a science too, using diuretics to flush the substances out prior to tests.

R189 I guess somebody wanted to expose coach Eteri and the Russian Federation at the biggest stage possible, taking down their star athlete AFTER getting media exposure for lading quads in the ladies’ team event and ‘winning’ a gold medal but BEFORE the start of the ladies’ individual competition. Postponing the medal ceremony again and again because of the ongoing ‘legal discussion’ only adds to the attention this creates. The Russian Federation apparently had no idea because otherwise they could have easily used some other girls in the team event and still secured the gold.
I think that somebody know exactly what they were doing, these are no coincidences….

I think the only way the Russian skating federation will get it through their heads that they must stop this shit is if their team medals are withheld and ALL their skaters are sent home, "clean" or not, and banned from competing for the next year or two. Then ALL their skaters are tested multiple times a year, all with no forewarning. This would include foreign skaters training in Russia. I'd love to see Eteri and her henchmen banned from coaching, but there's no way that will happen.
What am I thinking? None of this will happen. Twenty years from now, maybe ten, we will start to hear about the damage done long-term to these skaters. It's not just the damage to the health of the top skaters, it's the damage to the thousands of lower level athletes as well.

Maybe if there's an adverse ruling against Kamila and/or the team gold is stripped, then the entire ROC delegation goes home in a snit. That would be some drama. | by Anonymous | reply 234 | February 11, 2022 8:42 AM |
R234 snigger, they won't. These athletes have devoted years to training, why would they throw that away for 1 skater who failed a test (and there are 2 other Russian women's competitors who can take the gold in her absence anyway).
| by Anonymous | reply 235 | February 11, 2022 8:45 AM |
Xi is probably annoyed that the Russians are causing a negative distraction from the focus on his big "we are great!" show.
| by Anonymous | reply 236 | February 11, 2022 8:51 AM |
If Kamila goes home, the other two Russian women will still medal--even if they go splat, just because of the high tech levels of their programs. It does leave room for one of the Japanese women. If all the Russian women went home, then you'd see an American with a good shot at the bronze. Not necessarily Chen, though. She's not the best American skater--both Liu and Bell can outscore her. Bell's wonderful when she's on, but like Karen, she has a serious flake factor. Only Liu has the technical (or had) levels to compete.
Damn shame Bradie Tennell is so injured. She had the triples and the nerves to make a run for bronze in this kind of situation, but maybe Liu will do something.

R281 Hanyu and Cha are 100% gay imo. The big question is: Will they still marry women (Hanuy’s case maybe soon if he ends his career) despite getting to know openly gay men like coach Brian Orser and his partner, Jason Brown and many more at the cricket club?

Is Daisuke Takahashi gay? Now, I really liked his skating.
| by Anonymous | reply 286 | February 11, 2022 6:15 PM |
R286 Daisuke is glass closeted, he doesn’t hide it and it’s obvious to anyone who recognizes fabulousness. I can’t see him marrying a woman at all although he is almost middle aged by now. Hanyu- I am not so sure, he could feel the obligation to get married and have children.

R290, I found many skaters in my skating life to be virginal well beyond the typical age. You spend so much time locked up in an ice rink, it's hard to find time to meet people and do normal teenage activities. Unless you meet someone at the rink.

R279, like Shizuka Arakawa, who at 5’5 is a couple inches taller than Shoma and Uma. After winning her 2006 gold, she went on to skate in shows, and still does, looking amazing at 40. Figure skating experts, what is the general opinion on Johnny/Tara's commentary? I never liked Tara as a skater, but find her decent. Johnny, less so. I prefer them to the very annoying Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic though.
| by Anonymous | reply 309 | February 11, 2022 9:30 PM |
R265, he was fixing his junk before one of his runs.
| by Anonymous | reply 310 | February 11, 2022 9:44 PM |
R309, I generally like Johnny’s tendency to identify the jumps, speaking as a non-expert. He also points out things like, for instance, a hand down doesn’t get a deduction like a butt-on-the-ice fall. And I feel like Tara tends to have a similar style, identifying the jumps and giving backstory, only she does it more when women skate, while Johnny comments more on the men.
| by Anonymous | reply 311 | February 11, 2022 9:49 PM |
Scott and Sandra managed to be both vapid and deceitful (tending to favor skaters who signed on their tour or they choreographed, respectively), but Scott was smooth.
Johnny and Tara benefit greatly from that smoothness in Terry Gannon. Tara actually used to be much better (back when she was calling events by herself on the live streaming NBC would have online); it's not that she's dumber now, but she has to be the bread to Johnny's butter, and some of their schtick ends up being for entertainment rather than calling the skaters on the ice.
Johnny is at his best when he's willing to call a bitch out for weak technique, but his pro-Soviet affinities have really been notable in these games (he might as well have had his tongue in Kvitelashvili's ass, and while Morisi represents Georgia, he's Russian-born and in the Eteri stable). He will probably be audibly orgasming when Trusova is skating, even if she falls three times (like usual).

Michelle is the best known ice skater without an OGM. Should have been hers at least once, in Nagano. SLC was completely her own fault, her own undoing. Had to be hard for her though. Someone like Nicole Bobek would give her eyeteeth, however, to have "failed" like Michelle. Talk about a waste of talent.

R324, she lost fairly in Nagano. I don't like Tara, but Michelle repeated what Nancy Kerrigan did... thought she had it in the bag and didn't skate with enough enthusiasm. Not as robotic and like it was a job as Kerrigan did, but she didn't emote enough for the judges liking. Tara did.
My favorite story about those games is that after the competition and before the ceremony, Michelle was upset because she thought she was robbed. The reason she thought so was because her father, Danny, was screaming it up and down and over and over. Michelle turned to Frank to ask her if it was true, and he told her no, Tara went out there and earned it. Once Frank told her that, Michelle accepted it... Danny did not.

The other reason skating has tanked in popularity in the USA is the scoring system is so weird. The 6.0 system with judges then ranking competitors after their free skate was a great system - too bad it was manipulated in 2002.

How was it a great system? Not that today's system is great, but the 6.0 system was better? Why? Factored placings? It was a mess. You probably just liked that era of skating better. I do too, but the scoring system wasn't any "better."

Sinitsina and Katsapolov continue to get such strange marks from the judges. Does anyone else who watched the short program think they were within 2 points of the French? Not uncoincidentally, Stepanova and Bukin (who, admittedly, are a fun if undisciplined team) get best marks of the season and move ahead of the Canadians and Italians and within a whisper of Chock and Bates.
The Eurosport announcers were pretty blunt about feeling that the technical controller was calling some phantom level 3s on both P/C and H/D, and expressing some consternation that the Russians were in second, let alone close enough to win gold.

I went to one Grand Prix competition in 2005 - Skate America in Atlantic City. Great time even though I was surrounded by frauen. Knitting during the practice sessions. One had snuck in hot dogs wrapped in biscuits and shared them with everyone. One of the male pairs skaters, Jonathan Hunt, sat with us and gracefully answered all of our questions. I touched Brian Joubert’s hand as he skated a lap after the medal ceremony. My favorite, Kevin Van Der Perren of Belgium, landed so many quads in practice that he had nothing for the actual competition. Evan Lysacek too. It was fun. ABC was still doing skating and it all felt first class. Nothing like today.

Fake snow isn't rare for big events - even at iconic winter locales. BUT, it is rare to see 100% fake snow - usually there's a natural base and fake snow for patches and to give more volume.
| by Anonymous | reply 423 | February 13, 2022 3:59 PM |
They had been using fake snow but got 4-5 inches of the real stuff yesterday. It wreaked havoc.

As R424 points out, the opposite is also true. Fake snow is the base at some skiing places because they want to get the season started but there hasn't been significant natural accumulation yet.

R425, I'm a lot less concerned about using water for fake snow than the fact that there are people living in the desert, a la Vegas and everywhere in Arizona and New Mexico, and acting like that is okay to use water that way. No cities should be built in the desert.

R416 We are not doing as well as expected. Many of our favorites have choked. Experts said we would win 20 gold medals. We won't get close to that with how often our favorites are choking. We should have gotten 4 gold medals today. We only got one. Very disappointing.

R481 from what I've read it's not optional in Russia. It's state sponsored there so you have to do it or you're out, you can't participate in the sport at all. Global Athlete put out a statement saying that they've been told that by several ex-Russian athletes. And she's just 15.

Russia does not have an Anti-Doping Agency: they never did, and never will. They will never test their athletes honestly, let alone actually punish the guilty. This proves it.
It's some kind of coincidence that the one sample delayed for weeks was the positive one. Dirty, dirty, dirty.
If NBC had any integrity, they would push the ladies competition to the Cock app and barely mention it. They won't, though. They'll hype it because angry people might want to tune in to see her fall. Johnny Weir will remain silent until it comes time to fawn over his favorite Russian. He and Tara might need to go after this.

R481, it’s her body that suffers from this stuff and not Eteri’s or the doctor’s body. Everything that goes along with it. Under elite athletics, there shouldn’t be cardiac damage unless something is wrong. Endurance athletes sometimes have cardiac damage, but then they also overtrain and undereat. A person who is undereating will have the body break down muscle for energy, and the heart is a muscle.
| by Anonymous | reply 511 | February 14, 2022 2:46 PM |
Number one effect of the female athlete triad health effects: heart disease. Heart problems like this are not found in animals after intense activity and also are not found in most human elite athletes. I’m more concerned about the “anorexia is ok” attitude of the team than about the doping. The doping is to mask the physiological effects of anorexia for a few years.

The IOC doesn't want her to skate R508. They, along with the International Skate Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency, wanted to extend a suspension that would have prevented her from skating in the women's competition. They were overruled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who found that Valieva was a "protected person" (minor) who would suffer "irreparable harm" if suspended.
As a result, the IOC have decided not to award ANY medals in any category that Valieva medals in. This already includes the Team Event, so none of her Russian teammates will be getting medals either.
I think it's unfair to the other countries -- Team USA won't get their Silver nor Japan their Bronze -- but there are probably legal reasons they can't only withhold a specific medal if the arbitrators have already ruled against them.

Sheesh, the Americans really didn’t do well, did they?
I was gonna say they shat the bed but it seems indelicate.
😬😬

Women's Free Skate = Thursday, 1/17---LIVE = 5:00 a.m. ET, USA Channel. (NBC at 8:00 p.m. will be a repeat showing.)

R548, she has permanent back injuries and had to retire.

[quote] Sheesh, the Americans really didn’t do well,
Perhaps the American figure skaters should take performance-enhancing drugs, since apparently no one cares about cheating anymore.
| by Anonymous | reply 552 | February 16, 2022 5:40 PM |
Doping is only approved for Russian athletes.
| by Anonymous | reply 553 | February 16, 2022 7:18 PM |
Americans never cheat in sports.
| by Anonymous | reply 554 | February 16, 2022 9:18 PM |
Americans haven't been banned from sending a team to the Olympics for constantly cheating... that much is for sure!
| by Anonymous | reply 555 | February 16, 2022 9:19 PM |
The difference for American athletes who dope, though, at least recently, is that the dopers are stripped of their awards and shunned. Marion Davis is a good example of that. Lance Armstrong too. They aren't celebrated like the Russians, who never take responsibility but instead blame the West for their own bad decisions.
| by Anonymous | reply 556 | February 16, 2022 10:24 PM |
R554, That absurdity misses the true larger point, to wit:
Of course, some Americans have cheated at sports! Pete Rose and Lance Armstrong are two of the most famous.
BUT we have never had such cheating developed, aided, abetted, and rewarded by the entire US Federal government!

Marion Jones, R556. I think that's who you're talking about. I know it was an honest mistake, not trying to be a bitch. The track and field athlete who was once a darling until she got busted.
| by Anonymous | reply 558 | February 17, 2022 2:50 AM |
Yes 558, Marion Jones. My mistake.

NOT A SPOILER, BUT TO STOP ANY SPOILER:
The Women's Figure Skating Free Skate---LIVE--- is completed.
The Final Top 3 finishes are now determined, having the Short Program scores figured in. The Panda Bears have been given.
If you don't want to know the results until tonight with the re-run on NBC, I recommend not reading any news websites.
| by Anonymous | reply 560 | February 17, 2022 2:17 PM |
I woke up in the middle of the night to see it. HO-LEE-SHIT!
On the other hand, I don't think I've heard POTO or Carmen this time around!
| by Anonymous | reply 561 | February 17, 2022 2:29 PM |
Yeah, couldn’t avoid spoiler. My damn phone sent alerts from CNN, I think, and it spoiled it for me.
| by Anonymous | reply 562 | February 17, 2022 6:26 PM |
Since it is now over in Eastern Time....
All the Sturm und Drang, and Fate made it all irrelevant.
The Russians might think twice next time.

Aaaaand here comes Eileen Gu, who traded patriotism for yuan. Trying for her 3rd medal, hoping for her 2nd Gold.
| by Anonymous | reply 565 | February 18, 2022 3:36 AM |
If Gu was to become crippled in a skiing accident, let's say she's ends up a ventilator dependent quadriplegic. Would China tend to her needs?

The Spanish pairs skater guy is a tall drink of water who fills out his pants nicely.
| by Anonymous | reply 567 | February 19, 2022 2:09 AM |
Are any of the male pairs skaters gay?
| by Anonymous | reply 568 | February 19, 2022 2:14 AM |
What channel are you guys watching? I can't find the skating.
| by Anonymous | reply 569 | February 19, 2022 2:17 AM |
R569 it was on NBC. Will be back on at 7pm (west coast).
| by Anonymous | reply 570 | February 19, 2022 2:30 AM |
They should have postponed this mens freestyle ski. It's so windy. Everyone is crashing, so the first few people who got a clean run in have had no one challenge their scores.

How the fuck did curling become the hipster sport du jour? Takes no athletic ability, more like bar shuffleboard being an Olympic sport. Maybe I answered my own question. It's an "every man" sport that any fat ass could do, so people are drawn to it. It's so meh, yet it's always on TV.
| by Anonymous | reply 572 | February 19, 2022 4:47 AM |
I have no idea if it's "the hipster sport du jour," but I'm addicted to it. I'm 65 years old. I find it oddly soothing. I can (and have) watched it for hours, even before the Olympics.
| by Anonymous | reply 573 | February 19, 2022 5:05 AM |
R568, Timothy Le Duc is gay. But most male pairs skaters are hunky straight dudes.

This is my first Winter Games that I didn’t sit down to watch on television…it’s easier to get bits and pieces on streaming video. The Russian athletes behavior, athletes competing via flags of convenience and other factors have really soured the games for me. Back in the day, I would take personal days off from work the day after the skating competitions so I could stay up late and discuss it with my friends around the world online. And get smashed off my port wine.

Does anyone know where to find the NBC Replay coverage of Figure Skating that has actual commentary? Each time I look, I only find the general feed.
| by Anonymous | reply 577 | February 20, 2022 4:30 AM |
I watched the USA and NBC coverage which both had commentary. I don't know if Peacock included commentary.
| by Anonymous | reply 578 | February 20, 2022 4:33 AM |
Yeah, I've checked NBC, NBC Sports, Peacock, and USA, and none of them seem to have replays with commentary. Was just wondering if I was missing it somewhere.
| by Anonymous | reply 579 | February 20, 2022 4:37 AM |
I found it, apparently they're not doing the sport specific replays with commentary. You have to search for Primetime Replays and watch / skip through the entire feed from each night. Thanks.

| by Anonymous | reply 585 | February 20, 2022 8:29 PM |
I can picture some situation where some athletes who trained or coached by Eteri turn on her and go public on documentaries or podcasts similar to what happened with Bela and Marta Karolyi in the gymnastic world.
