The OFFICIAL DL Winter Olympics thread 2

Writer Ava Lawson

Go Nathan! Straight up, Evan Lysacek was the last US male to win Olympics gold in 2010

by Anonymousreply 591February 20, 2022 9:48 PM

Yay! Chloe Kim won the gold

by Anonymousreply 1February 10, 2022 4:07 AM

So it’s possible Nathan Chen could be the first figure skater to win two Olympic gold medals on the same day?

by Anonymousreply 2February 10, 2022 4:08 AM

I know it's only the second Olympics to allow music with vocals, but some of these song choices are making me long for a return to the days of instrumentals only. Muse & Daft Punk were nice choices though.

by Anonymousreply 3February 10, 2022 4:13 AM

Hanyu is SHITTING THE BED.

by Anonymousreply 4February 10, 2022 4:17 AM

That Hanyu program just died on the vine

by Anonymousreply 6February 10, 2022 4:22 AM

Do the men HAVE to all wear black pants? Maybe some nice slate grey or navy?

by Anonymousreply 7February 10, 2022 4:22 AM

R2, Were the Russians DQed?

by Anonymousreply 8February 10, 2022 4:23 AM

Poor Hanyu, he won’t repeat. 🥺

by Anonymousreply 9February 10, 2022 4:24 AM

All these long programs so far suck—mainly because no one has any sense of fluidity and artistry. And lots of falling

Hanyu does have artistry but he gave up early

by Anonymousreply 10February 10, 2022 4:24 AM

Don’t skaters usually choose music of the hosting country? I’m not hearing any Chinese tunes

by Anonymousreply 11February 10, 2022 4:25 AM

Semenenko is SHITTING THE BED.

by Anonymousreply 12February 10, 2022 4:25 AM

I miss Elvis Stojko and Phillippe Candeloro.

by Anonymousreply 13February 10, 2022 4:26 AM

Nathan Chen talks way too fast—like he’s a little autistic

by Anonymousreply 16February 10, 2022 4:29 AM

Haha, r15. No. Poster said Nathan could win Gold #2 today. Not possible if the Russian team isn't disqualified.

by Anonymousreply 17February 10, 2022 4:30 AM

Vocals should never have been allowed. If you can't emote without them then you should lose.

by Anonymousreply 18February 10, 2022 4:31 AM

R17, and they won't be disqualified. They get away with it time and time again.

by Anonymousreply 19February 10, 2022 4:32 AM

Will Nathan fix his teeth after the Olympics?

by Anonymousreply 20February 10, 2022 4:37 AM

Is Nathan Chen skating to Star Trek? That's what his costume looks like.

by Anonymousreply 21February 10, 2022 4:38 AM

There's only one non-Asian skater in the finals?

by Anonymousreply 22February 10, 2022 4:39 AM

R21 He's skating to an Elton John medley. Free Skating: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocket Man, Bennie and the Jets (all from "Rocket Man") by Elton John, Bernie Taupin

by Anonymousreply 23February 10, 2022 4:39 AM

Okay. The costume is still ugly.

by Anonymousreply 24February 10, 2022 4:42 AM

Yeah, I'm sure astronauts in space can see Nathan in that shirt.

by Anonymousreply 25February 10, 2022 4:44 AM

OMG, what is Johnny Weir wearing?!

by Anonymousreply 26February 10, 2022 4:45 AM

The black collar sticking out makes it worse.

by Anonymousreply 27February 10, 2022 4:45 AM

The Georgian skater is handsome.

by Anonymousreply 28February 10, 2022 4:47 AM

I surmised it was a Chanel jacket.

It’s beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 29February 10, 2022 4:48 AM

Is anyone watching with commentary? Or is the live feed commentary free?

by Anonymousreply 30February 10, 2022 4:48 AM

[Quote] No. Poster said Nathan could win Gold #2 today. Not possible if the Russian team isn't disqualified.

Thanks, Mr Obvious

by Anonymousreply 31February 10, 2022 4:52 AM

Wow, all the men skaters so far SUCK

by Anonymousreply 32February 10, 2022 4:52 AM

R30, I’m watching on NBC and it has commenting as usual

by Anonymousreply 33February 10, 2022 4:52 AM

R23, Nathan gets the spectators energized when he segues into "Bennie and the Jets." I think this medley is his most dynamic.

by Anonymousreply 34February 10, 2022 4:54 AM

Then why did that poster say it? That's why I asked, Jerk.

by Anonymousreply 35February 10, 2022 4:55 AM

Another one bites the dust

by Anonymousreply 36February 10, 2022 4:55 AM

Ohhh, that fall the Korean just had looked painful.

by Anonymousreply 37February 10, 2022 4:56 AM

[Quote] Then why did that poster say it? That's why I asked, Jerk.

The poster said that it could be a possibility (if the Russians are disqualified—was understood by anyone following the Olympics)

by Anonymousreply 38February 10, 2022 4:56 AM

The Korean’s butt is too filled with Brian Orser’s cum. It’s off balance

by Anonymousreply 39February 10, 2022 4:57 AM

Once someone falls, the rest of the routine is usually lifeless

by Anonymousreply 40February 10, 2022 4:58 AM

Pavorotti singing Nessum Dorma. Love. It was actually his last public performance at the opening ceremony of th 2006 Winter Olympics

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 41February 10, 2022 4:58 AM

Brian Orser has gotten fat.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 42February 10, 2022 5:00 AM

Saw him in "Turandot" at the Met just for that song. Love it and his version.

by Anonymousreply 43February 10, 2022 5:01 AM

R41, kind of pathetic to play fake Chinese music during a routine in China

by Anonymousreply 44February 10, 2022 5:02 AM

What time will Chen skate?

by Anonymousreply 45February 10, 2022 5:02 AM

Cha looks like he belongs in a Kotean boy band.

by Anonymousreply 46February 10, 2022 5:02 AM

R33, just switched over. I don't like Tara and Johnny, but watching without commentary feels off to me.

by Anonymousreply 47February 10, 2022 5:02 AM

R42, that’s hunky, not fat

by Anonymousreply 48February 10, 2022 5:02 AM

R42, Orser has BEEN fat. Where have you been?

by Anonymousreply 49February 10, 2022 5:03 AM

Jason Brown now in 3rd. Enjoy your moment, Jason. You are special.

by Anonymousreply 50February 10, 2022 5:04 AM

I went to a US Figure Skating champion a few years ago. It was boring as fuck. Can you imagine having to sit through 20 of these routines??

by Anonymousreply 51February 10, 2022 5:04 AM

Uggh, I hated Elvis Stojko. Ferret face.

by Anonymousreply 52February 10, 2022 5:04 AM

Is the general guidance for men’s routines “just fling arms around”?

by Anonymousreply 54February 10, 2022 5:06 AM

This is shades of the Women's event in 1992... splat fest in finals.

by Anonymousreply 55February 10, 2022 5:07 AM

R55, LOL, I remember that well

by Anonymousreply 56February 10, 2022 5:08 AM

R51, I have relatives who live in Salt Lake and they said they same thing about the figure skating in 2002. Really boring. They loved short track speed skating though.

by Anonymousreply 57February 10, 2022 5:09 AM

First Olympics with no figures r55 and it was supposed to be a jump fest with ito, Harding and yamaguchi. It’s been awhile but didn’t lu Chen have the best program of the night.

by Anonymousreply 58February 10, 2022 5:11 AM

Here's the little cutie Kagiyama.

by Anonymousreply 60February 10, 2022 5:11 AM

I generally hate all the commentary, so much so that I didn't watch any of the 2020 Summer or 2018 Winter Olympics. But working from home and not having much to do these days, I tuned in. I'm surprised at the coverage. While the snowboarding (and all its variations) commentary is awful, the figure skating commentary has been very restrained, especially while they are skating. As, I haven't seen many of those "personal stories" segments that made past Olympics unwatchable (for me).

by Anonymousreply 62February 10, 2022 5:12 AM

I actually miss the personal stories!

by Anonymousreply 63February 10, 2022 5:13 AM

R62, I agree. Weir and Lipinski are pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 64February 10, 2022 5:13 AM

All being tripled and doubled

by Anonymousreply 65February 10, 2022 5:14 AM

I want to see a long spread eagle like Kwan used to do at emotional high points.

by Anonymousreply 66February 10, 2022 5:15 AM

I think all of this quad shit has killed the beauty of figure skating. There's barely any artistry anymore. They're all too concerned and nervous about staying on their feet and not crashing to the ice like a sack of potatoes.

by Anonymousreply 67February 10, 2022 5:16 AM

Kagiyama is terrific! Not perfect, but terrific!

by Anonymousreply 68February 10, 2022 5:16 AM

R58, yup. Lu Chen was in the second to last group and was the surprise of the night. She had the cleanest skate and landed 6 or 7 triples.

Kristi's was the least flawed in the final by not falling, but putting her hand down.

by Anonymousreply 69February 10, 2022 5:17 AM

Sadly, artistry has compelled been pushed aside for more jumps, especially quads.

by Anonymousreply 70February 10, 2022 5:17 AM

Agreed, r67. And the quad is poised to invade Women's FS.

by Anonymousreply 71February 10, 2022 5:17 AM

Dammit, Jim, I’m an ice skater not a space engineer!!

by Anonymousreply 72February 10, 2022 5:18 AM

Nathan, this is your moment. Don’t crash and the gold is yours!

by Anonymousreply 73February 10, 2022 5:18 AM

If/when Chen wins, he'll be the first Asian American Male to win Gold for the US... 30 years after Kristi Yamaguchi was the first male or female to do it.

by Anonymousreply 74February 10, 2022 5:18 AM

That Yagi is just too adorable for words.

by Anonymousreply 76February 10, 2022 5:19 AM

I hope Nathan isn’t on steroids!!

by Anonymousreply 77February 10, 2022 5:20 AM

R74, and sadly, Kristi didn’t get many deals afterwards specifically because she was Asian Americans. She had to tour around wearing an American flag outfit to remind us she was indeed American

by Anonymousreply 78February 10, 2022 5:22 AM

Nathan is obviously a phenomenal jumper, but I find him and his program boring.

by Anonymousreply 80February 10, 2022 5:23 AM

The program is put together well—he just build it emotionally like Michelle Kwan used to

by Anonymousreply 82February 10, 2022 5:24 AM

YES!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉👑👑👑👑👑👑👑

by Anonymousreply 83February 10, 2022 5:24 AM

Well done, Nathan Chen. You deserve this.

by Anonymousreply 84February 10, 2022 5:24 AM

Go, Nathan! I’ll buy a Wheaties box with your face on it

by Anonymousreply 86February 10, 2022 5:25 AM

R78 it was the height of American/Japanese tensions. Kerrigan ended up getting more endorsements after 1992, as the Bronze medalist.

Things didn't get any better for Michelle Kwan in 1998. American press routinely referred to her in ways that made her seem like she was not American, but an "other."

by Anonymousreply 87February 10, 2022 5:25 AM

After Kwan won the World Championship, a newspaper headline said something like “Kwan wins; American takes silver!”

by Anonymousreply 89February 10, 2022 5:29 AM

Speaking of Yamaguchi, she really didn't get enough credit as a skater. All the buzz was around Ito and Harding as the technical stars, but Kristi wasn't a slouch. Her jump list in 1992 held up for over 20 years... and even still, 20 year after her, not many women were doing Triple Lutz/Triple Toe.

by Anonymousreply 90February 10, 2022 5:30 AM

R89, Ah, was that it? I thought it was during Nagano and the headline was, "American takes Gold! Kwan gets silver."

by Anonymousreply 91February 10, 2022 5:31 AM

[quote] Cha looks like he belongs in a Kotean boy band.

by Anonymousreply 92February 10, 2022 5:33 AM

R91, you may be right. I can’t remember the exact wording

by Anonymousreply 93February 10, 2022 5:33 AM

Did people feel Evan Lysacek deserved his gold? I can't remember the details.

by Anonymousreply 94February 10, 2022 5:33 AM

[quote] Ah, was that it? I thought it was during Nagano and the headline was, "American takes Gold! Kwan gets silver."

This was the headline:

Chen is from Salt Lake City. Is he Mormon?

by Anonymousreply 96February 10, 2022 5:34 AM

[quote] it was the height of American/Japanese tensions.

During World War II?

by Anonymousreply 97February 10, 2022 5:35 AM

R95, there were others because I remember it being a printed newspaper

by Anonymousreply 98February 10, 2022 5:35 AM

R94, I think people thought he didn't deserve it because he didn't attempt a quad.

I don't think he deserved it because of how he behaves in a steam room!

by Anonymousreply 99February 10, 2022 5:35 AM

R96, people have speculated. It' remains unclear.

by Anonymousreply 100February 10, 2022 5:36 AM

Kwan not American from Seattle Times

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 102February 10, 2022 5:37 AM

Nathan should do ESPN's naked athlete issue. He's got great legs and ass.

by Anonymousreply 103February 10, 2022 5:38 AM

Has Kwan's appointment as U.S. ambassador to Belize been confirmed by the Senate yet?

by Anonymousreply 104February 10, 2022 5:38 AM

MSNBC also had a suspect headline about Kwan

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 105February 10, 2022 5:39 AM

R102, so they did it to her at her first Olympics and then did it again four years later... goes to show they just didn't care.

by Anonymousreply 106February 10, 2022 5:40 AM

What’s the deal with the “recognition” ceremony and not a medal ceremony?

Are they waiting for urine results?

by Anonymousreply 107February 10, 2022 5:40 AM

R105, ah, that was the one I was thinking about, "American Beats out Kwan."

by Anonymousreply 108February 10, 2022 5:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 109February 10, 2022 5:41 AM

R107 they did it in the 2018 games too, I believe. They do a spearate ceremony elsewhere. I don't know why. Seems like a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 110February 10, 2022 5:43 AM

I'm so happy for Nathan. I just hope that this win will bring him great success and happiness.

R103, if he did, I'd buy the first issue.

by Anonymousreply 111February 10, 2022 5:48 AM

Who cares about that old news?! Revel in the moment!

Awards ceremony soon on NBC!

by Anonymousreply 112February 10, 2022 5:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 115February 10, 2022 5:52 AM

Seriously, R114? I did not know that.

by Anonymousreply 116February 10, 2022 5:52 AM

I do wonder why they didn’t let them go.

The virus? The lack of freedom to roam around?

by Anonymousreply 117February 10, 2022 5:53 AM

R116, Terry just mentioned it.

by Anonymousreply 118February 10, 2022 6:01 AM

Chen should have been deducted points for the knock off star trek shirt from Walmart. Did he pay a designer to come up with that?

In any case, very happy for him. After NBC hyping him so much, I was worried the jinx was on.

by Anonymousreply 119February 10, 2022 6:04 AM

I was so worried Chen would come down with a case of the twisties! I didn't need to worry though since I wasn't putting an effort into it.

by Anonymousreply 120February 10, 2022 6:08 AM

Thrilled for Chen. He worked so hard (so did every other olympic skater, of course--but he had the ability and the talent to build to a gold.

by Anonymousreply 121February 10, 2022 6:34 AM

I have to say it's very nice to see these young guys being supoortive of gays. Birk Ruud who got gold in freestyle skiing had painted nails. I don't think he is gay as he follows a ton of beautiful women on Insta, but still. He is probably an ally. Same with another Norwegian skier who won I think it was silver in X-Games. He isn't competing in the Olympics. Anyways, he has the rainbow flag as his profile pic on Insta. I don't think he is gay either as he follows a ton of beautiful women, but he's probably an ally. It makes me happy to see these young athletes being so supportive of the gay community. Gives me hope for the future.

by Anonymousreply 122February 10, 2022 6:40 AM

I liked Nathan’s costumes. The tux for his short program and the shirt for the free.

They are different, yet sleek: fitting for his physique and demeanour.

Prefer them to all the rhinestoney, ticky-tacky stuff seen on many skaters. Blech.

by Anonymousreply 123February 10, 2022 6:46 AM

Ok so I’m not crazy. This is the 2008 Summer opening ceremonies.

It’s the same exact program as the 2022 opening program.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 124February 10, 2022 6:58 AM

This one wasn't even close. Nathan was so obviously skating at a much higher level than his closest competitors. Their time may come, but his is NOW.

Congrats, Quad King.

by Anonymousreply 125February 10, 2022 7:08 AM

[quote]Did people feel Evan Lysacek deserved his gold?

by Anonymousreply 126February 10, 2022 7:17 AM

Beautiful performance by Jason Brown.

by Anonymousreply 128February 10, 2022 7:36 AM

Jason's performance was the only one that truly moved me as being a work of art.

by Anonymousreply 129February 10, 2022 7:46 AM

Ilia Malinin deserved to be on the team. His scores at nationals would have won bronze here.

Sorry Jason.

by Anonymousreply 130February 10, 2022 7:49 AM

Omg Nathan’s costumes were custom Vera???

Color me shocked!!!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 131February 10, 2022 8:09 AM

R131, Evan must be pissed. Nathan better not get any ideas about being Vera's new, "friend."

by Anonymousreply 132February 10, 2022 8:11 AM

Nationals scores are always inflated

by Anonymousreply 133February 10, 2022 8:17 AM

Norwegian, you must be happy today. Norway has most medals and is tied for top golds.

by Anonymousreply 134February 10, 2022 8:55 AM

R134 Yes, thanks to Johaug. She is impressive. Finally a favorite who doesn't underperform like so many of our other athletes. A surprise silver from Kilde today was nice too. A gold and silver yesterday, and the same today. Hope this will be the start of a turning point for us. We went 3 days without a gold medal, which was sad.

by Anonymousreply 135February 10, 2022 9:18 AM

Now will Nathan get a Wheaties box like Kristi, the last figure skater to do so?

by Anonymousreply 136February 10, 2022 12:23 PM

Valieva shouldn't be allowed to skate in the individual event.

by Anonymousreply 137February 10, 2022 1:42 PM

from si.com:

Chen strode onto the ice in a red-hued, planetarium of a shirt—”You don’t argue with Vera Wang,” he said. “Whatever she gives you: ‘All right, cool, I’ll take that,”—and reminded himself to stay present.

by Anonymousreply 138February 10, 2022 2:05 PM

R134 Not anymore😂 Germany on top again.

by Anonymousreply 140February 10, 2022 5:17 PM

Any chance of US skaters ending up on podium in remaining events?

by Anonymousreply 141February 10, 2022 6:08 PM

Is Nathan homosexual? Sorry, I'm too lazy to go through a million posts.

by Anonymousreply 142February 10, 2022 6:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 144February 10, 2022 6:36 PM

A suicide watch for Hanyu?

by Anonymousreply 146February 10, 2022 6:52 PM

R146, no, I think Hanyu will be ok. Maybe eventually he’ll be able to leave the house without bodyguards and live a more normal life. But no question he’s changed the sport throughout Asia - there are millions of more skating fans not just in Japan but also in China, Korea, and throughout Asia that started tuning in for him and maybe now will keep watching for others. I think Johnny Weir also had that kind of impact- he’s modern, doesn’t feel stuck in a past era.

by Anonymousreply 147February 10, 2022 8:17 PM

"I think all of this quad shit has killed the beauty of figure skating. There's barely any artistry anymore."

Artistry = subjectivity, and people hate subjectivity deciding the outcome in sports, even if they like the sport. The scoring changes to figure skating and gymnastics alter the balance between technical skill and artistry compared to previous eras/scoring systems. There's still an artistic component to both sports, but it's been deemphasized. And I think most fans who basically only watch during the Olympics (and there's a lot of those fans) like that. "He landed 5 quads and didn't fall, the other guy only landed 4, and the other guy landed 4, but fell on his triple axel - so they should be gold, silver, bronze in that order." People like it to make sense, even if it a judged sport will never completely make sense. Olympics average-guy/gal watcher doesn't care about overall artistry. It's seen a vehicle for favoritsm, elitism, even corruption.

by Anonymousreply 148February 10, 2022 9:40 PM

R148, I think there’s more to it than that- people don’t want it to be just a jumping contest in the sense that many figure skating fans aren’t particularly fans of skiing or curling or other non-artistic sports. I would compare it to playing the piano- there are a lot of elements where you can be technically perfect in figure skating- you don’t stumble on your steps, your spins are fast and centered, you have great speed across the ice, your movements reflect a well-rehearsed performance. It’s not just jumps.

by Anonymousreply 149February 10, 2022 9:57 PM

R40, in the short program yes, a fall is enough to ruin it. But the free has so many more jumping passes that I think one fall doesn’t necessarily distract so much. The falls aren’t really more distracting to me than the other significant mistakes, near falls and hand down, etc. I’d rather have one fall and the rest clean than have several jumps look on the messy side.

by Anonymousreply 150February 10, 2022 10:08 PM

R148 I’m one of those once-every-four-years fans. I started watching unaware of any scoring changes and had never heard of most of the competitors.

But even this amateur viewer picked up early on that a lot of the routines consisted of setting up the next jump.

Don’t get me wrong - I’ve always loved the jumps as they were where the potential for drama (I.e. a fall) was.

But when to my eyes it looks as though the goal is to fit in as many jumps as possible, they kind of lose their currency. To me, before any experts pile on.

On a side note - I’m assuming that Kamila Valieva is as tiny as the other female skaters, but that she just has very long legs in proportion to the rest of her? I’m aware of the doping test failure but assume that this is just how she’s built, not evidence of anything else.

Amateur viewer now signing out.

by Anonymousreply 151February 10, 2022 10:20 PM

R151, women have their strongest size to strength ratio right before puberty hits. Basically what Eteri (the Russian coach and the Cruella de Ville of skating) does is gets these girls, get them to jump and then gets them to starve long enough to stave off the puberty growth spurt. Once they hit puberty and get hips, their jumps are gone. So we get one-season stars and then a new one the next year.

Valieva's long legs are partly a sign of her not being fully grown, though I'm sure she'll always be on the relatively leggy side, but think about what a 12-13 year old girl looks like.

Anyway, when the doping thing came out about Valieva, I thought "Oh, of course." Because the drug she used increases stamina and if you're starving yourself to stave off adolescence, where is the stamina to do a quad in the second half of a long program coming from?

Now we know and it's just a question of how extensive the doping is among the Eteri bots.

by Anonymousreply 152February 10, 2022 10:31 PM

Thanks R152 - that all makes sense.

Times like these I love the DL.

by Anonymousreply 153February 10, 2022 10:38 PM

[quote] Semenenko is SHITTING THE BED.

Do they dope up the Russian skating twinks as well?

by Anonymousreply 154February 10, 2022 10:40 PM

R151 You're welcome. I'm glad I can discuss it on DL. Golden Skate is the big figure skating forum and they've fucking banned discussing the doping situation. Like, are you kidding me? It's, by far, the biggest skating story right now, given the implications for women's figure skating for the last 10 years. (Much as I admire Nathan's coming back for the Gold, the 18-year-old Japanese kid and Hanyu trying the quad axel.)

by Anonymousreply 155February 10, 2022 10:44 PM

Johnny and Tara were oddly very tight-lipped about it on the Today show this morning.

by Anonymousreply 156February 10, 2022 10:56 PM

Well, Johnny is a Russophile-would that be the word? He’s been to Russia and has never been shy expressing his love for its culture, people, etc.

Let Johnny try to publicly kiss his lover in public on the streets of Moscow. Tell me how well it goes. He’s a flake.

by Anonymousreply 158February 10, 2022 11:12 PM

R157, R158, Johnny just wants to be a mail-order bride married to a wealthy oligarch, dressing in expensive furs and leathers.

by Anonymousreply 159February 10, 2022 11:14 PM

Yeah, I know, R158. But that’s how he is. He’s enamoured of former Russian/Soviet skating champions and he loves the culture.

by Anonymousreply 160February 10, 2022 11:17 PM

He’s a fool. And I’ve never liked Tara either. At least they have the steady presence of Terry Gannon.

by Anonymousreply 161February 10, 2022 11:23 PM

R156, it seems like coverage about it is completely lacking. You'd think it would be a bigger story but it seems like they don't want it to be.

by Anonymousreply 162February 10, 2022 11:27 PM

R162, at least the NYPost is having fun with it.

I was getting the impression that the media was taking a 'wait and see' approach to the story, as it was all hush hush in the beginning. Is it official that Valieva's the one that was caught with the positive test? Or info from 'sources'?

R167, that is so cool. And Peggy Flemming, whoa, thought that was Caitlyn Jenner for a moment. Dorothy Hamill looks great.

by Anonymousreply 169February 11, 2022 12:03 AM

R127 He had a cleanish program with the most difficult jumps - but god his skating is so ugly. All I see a little, jerky, spastic movements with stiff limbs. His neck and back area look weird, he needs to stretch his body more. He cannot hold an edge. The program is snooze with random music cuts. He only comes alive in the step sequence AFTER finishing all the jumps but then gives too much and overdoes it, it’s kind of tacky. The score is ridiculous but I guess this is what happens when the US media is willing to invest money to have their next figure skating ‘star ‘.

by Anonymousreply 170February 11, 2022 12:05 AM

The Washington Post has a fairly lengthy article about the confusion and silence on the doping allegations. It drew many, many angry comments. No one believes that she should be given a pass for this.

R146 Guys, Hanyu has made much more money 💰, has won much more fans worldwide and has exerted much more cultural impact than Nathan. He is a national hero in Japan. And Japan is probably the best country for a domestic skater to live because the sport is highly esteemed there. Theu have lots of dedicated, knowledgeable and cultured fans in Japan - in contrast to Russia and the US.

by Anonymousreply 172February 11, 2022 12:15 AM

I had heard that they weren't mentioning her name because she's a minor, so I guess that still applies to why they're still quiet about it.

[quote]The IOC has called the case a “legal issue,” reportedly because Valieva is a minor and therefore a “Protected Person” under the World Anti-Doping Code. The Code allows for lesser penalties for minors who violate the code.

This is an even better article from Business Insider, which talks about Valieva’s notorious coach, Eteri Tutberidze, and how her “methods” work until her female skaters are seventeen. Then, their careers are invariably ended by major injuries. Essentially, Valieva is running out of time no matter what.

R125 Only the executed jump layout of Nathan’s program was on another level. Yuma Kagiyama, the 19-year-old kid from Japan who won Silver, had much better flow (in his skating as well as in and out of jump), edge quality and knee bend. Nathan skates with very stiff knees.

By the way, the title quad king is already claimed by his training mate Ilia Malinin, who can do a combo of two quad jumps.

R182 Ilia Malinin has only just turned 17 but beat Jason Brown at the last Nationals. Still, the US federation chose quadless Jason Brown for the Olympics, who never has and in all likeliness will never win any major competitions….

by Anonymousreply 184February 11, 2022 1:03 AM

So are they going to allow the Russian cheater to skate because she’s a minor? Xi should be mad at his pal Pooty for staining their Olympics with more cheating.

by Anonymousreply 185February 11, 2022 1:05 AM

R174

[quote] However, Russian figure skaters have tested positive for numerous other banned substances. A Russian skater had to withdraw from a World Championship in 2016 after testing positive for meldonium, a heart medication used by athletes to speed up their recoveries after training. According to the most recently available data published by the World Anti-Doping Agency for the year 2019, the only skater with an adverse result was Russian figure skater Maria Sotskova. She tested positive for a banned diuretic, often used as a masking agent for other substances. Hormone blockers, such as leuprolide, have been banned for athletes since 2005. Use of such drugs among Russian female figure skaters has been documented; athletes are sometimes told it's the only way to preserve their aerodynamic shape and extend their competitive careers.

These people are truly evil, doping up these kids like that. And it sounds like they have the covering up down to a science too, using diuretics to flush the substances out prior to tests.

by Anonymousreply 186February 11, 2022 1:07 AM

R186 That’s why we have such short careers, duh, it’s an act of mercy….Peak early and get replaced…..

by Anonymousreply 187February 11, 2022 1:08 AM

Apparently the positive was from Dec. If she’s not positive for a drug during the Olympics itself, does it still matter?

by Anonymousreply 188February 11, 2022 1:09 AM

I don't get it, why has it taken 2 months for a positive test result to surface? They should have benned her from even making it to Beijing.

by Anonymousreply 189February 11, 2022 1:20 AM

R189 I guess somebody wanted to expose coach Eteri and the Russian Federation at the biggest stage possible, taking down their star athlete AFTER getting media exposure for lading quads in the ladies’ team event and ‘winning’ a gold medal but BEFORE the start of the ladies’ individual competition. Postponing the medal ceremony again and again because of the ongoing ‘legal discussion’ only adds to the attention this creates. The Russian Federation apparently had no idea because otherwise they could have easily used some other girls in the team event and still secured the gold.

I think that somebody know exactly what they were doing, these are no coincidences….

by Anonymousreply 191February 11, 2022 1:28 AM

So in light of this, does the Quad accomplishment become void and we move forward saying no woman has successfully landed a quad?

Asking for a friend.

by Anonymousreply 192February 11, 2022 1:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 195February 11, 2022 1:50 AM

And R195, she's doped as well.

by Anonymousreply 196February 11, 2022 2:17 AM

R188, as I understand it, they usually do testing during breaks between events, because that’s when the doping occurs. The drugs are not stimulants—they are meant to help you train more effectively before competing.

by Anonymousreply 215February 11, 2022 4:00 AM

I think the only way the Russian skating federation will get it through their heads that they must stop this shit is if their team medals are withheld and ALL their skaters are sent home, "clean" or not, and banned from competing for the next year or two. Then ALL their skaters are tested multiple times a year, all with no forewarning. This would include foreign skaters training in Russia. I'd love to see Eteri and her henchmen banned from coaching, but there's no way that will happen.

What am I thinking? None of this will happen. Twenty years from now, maybe ten, we will start to hear about the damage done long-term to these skaters. It's not just the damage to the health of the top skaters, it's the damage to the thousands of lower level athletes as well.

by Anonymousreply 216February 11, 2022 4:15 AM

R216 yeah no... theyll do whate they've always done... invest countless years and millions of dollars in finding new ways to cheat.

[quote] Now that Nathan Chen, Shaun White and Chloe Kim have finished their events, and Shiffrin is a headcase unlikely to medal in remaining events, who will NBC hype for the next week?

This is what I'm wondering about it. I'm guessing maybe Elana Meyers Taylor or Karen Chen. I doubt NBC will hype up Granny Mariah Bell because she's too boring.

by Anonymousreply 222February 11, 2022 5:39 AM

Also, Granny Mariah has very little chance of meddling.

by Anonymousreply 223February 11, 2022 5:40 AM

Oh, dear. Is Granny Mariah not much of a gossip?

by Anonymousreply 224February 11, 2022 5:48 AM

Two of the ice dancing teams have a shot at medaling, so I expect they'll get some of the hype. I think Alyssa Liu will get some hype because she has done triple axels in the past.

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Sui/Han in pairs.

by Anonymousreply 225February 11, 2022 5:49 AM

If the Russian team gets pulled, are the top contenders Chen and the Japanese ladies?

by Anonymousreply 226February 11, 2022 5:53 AM

Alyssa Liu, because she will attempt a QUAD, r225.

by Anonymousreply 227February 11, 2022 5:59 AM

I hope Alyssa Liu styles her hair better. Her hair looked gross at the US Nationals.

by Anonymousreply 228February 11, 2022 5:59 AM

She was coming down with COVID during Nationals, she probably wasn't at her most energetic.

by Anonymousreply 229February 11, 2022 6:02 AM

I forgot about Jessie Diggins. I won't mind when they hype her, that girl is hardcore.

by Anonymousreply 230February 11, 2022 6:08 AM

If the Russians are banned, Karen might have a chance at a Bronze... with her routine she completely stole from another Chen!

by Anonymousreply 231February 11, 2022 6:18 AM

R203 I wonder which guys Hanyu has bedded while training in Canada all these years…..

by Anonymousreply 232February 11, 2022 8:18 AM

Maybe if there's an adverse ruling against Kamila and/or the team gold is stripped, then the entire ROC delegation goes home in a snit. That would be some drama. In any case, whatever happens, the Russian media, at the direction of the government, will blame the West because it's never their fault. And then invade Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 234February 11, 2022 8:42 AM

R234 snigger, they won't. These athletes have devoted years to training, why would they throw that away for 1 skater who failed a test (and there are 2 other Russian women's competitors who can take the gold in her absence anyway).

by Anonymousreply 235February 11, 2022 8:45 AM

Xi is probably annoyed that the Russians are causing a negative distraction from the focus on his big "we are great!" show.

by Anonymousreply 236February 11, 2022 8:51 AM

If Kamila goes home, the other two Russian women will still medal--even if they go splat, just because of the high tech levels of their programs. It does leave room for one of the Japanese women. If all the Russian women went home, then you'd see an American with a good shot at the bronze. Not necessarily Chen, though. She's not the best American skater--both Liu and Bell can outscore her. Bell's wonderful when she's on, but like Karen, she has a serious flake factor. Only Liu has the technical (or had) levels to compete.

Damn shame Bradie Tennell is so injured. She had the triples and the nerves to make a run for bronze in this kind of situation, but maybe Liu will do something.

by Anonymousreply 238February 11, 2022 9:14 AM

R167, Sarah Hughes has aged terribly, and Lipinski and Peggy Fleming have had terrible plastic surgery. Dorothy Hamill and Tenley Albright look amazing. Glad to see Dick Button is still kicking.

by Anonymousreply 239February 11, 2022 10:21 AM

R239 What does their looks have to do with anything though? Sarah Hughes won a gold medal. Her looks have nothing to do with anything, frankly.

by Anonymousreply 240February 11, 2022 10:46 AM

R206, but it's kind of funny.

by Anonymousreply 241February 11, 2022 12:17 PM

R240 Sarah Hughes is an OGM and graduated from Harvard. These are extraordinary achievements. Plastic surgery is cheap and common, any skank could get it...

R238 If they remove Camilla, her quad-jumping training mates will come on top, who are just as likely as her to be doped.....

by Anonymousreply 242February 11, 2022 12:21 PM

I wonder if Eteri's doping of her skaters, is deterring US/other country female skaters to enter the field, knowing that they have less chances of ever becoming world/Olympic champions. Obviously it hasn't stopped the Japanese. Hopefully Nathan's win will inspire a whole new generation of younger kids to pick up sport.

by Anonymousreply 243February 11, 2022 12:38 PM

R203 Nathan certainly CAN - she just won't any time soon.

by Anonymousreply 244February 11, 2022 12:45 PM

Sarah Hughes is very lucky she won that OGM, it really was a right place at the right time situation. She never won another major title, including a US national title.

R247 Wait, you think Nathan is gay? Yuzu probably is, but Nathan - I don't think so.

by Anonymousreply 248February 11, 2022 1:09 PM

Most of the Asian-American (and Asian-Canadian) figure skaters are straight. They started because their Asian tiger parents pushed them into it.

R248 - he absolutely is. Watch and wait, bebé.

by Anonymousreply 250February 11, 2022 1:14 PM

R250 Interesting. Nathan has dated skater Amber Glenn (who came out as pansexual btw) and when he was 16, he was asked on social media about his sexuality, and he unmistakably made it clear he was straight (not in a Shawn Mendes way....)

R249 I always wonder about Vincent Zhou. He often doesn't seem straight to me but maybe he is just very awkward.... He has a sister who looks like a man, though.

by Anonymousreply 251February 11, 2022 1:35 PM

Sarah Hughes looks good to me…what’s wrong with her?

I kept thinking, “Now why isn’t Michelle Kwan in that video?”…then…I REMEMBERED.

by Anonymousreply 252February 11, 2022 2:32 PM

R251, Vincent follows Brian Orser and Junwhan Cha on Instagram and there seems to be a lot of coded language this season that he is somehow skating for the right to be himself. Obviously he’s from an ultra conservative family and yet he still opposed Trump’s ban of trans people in the military, something people forgot when it became clear he’s more on the right wing side in some ways when it comes to trans rights, or at least was a few years ago. Who knows what he thinks or would like to say now.

by Anonymousreply 253February 11, 2022 3:12 PM

Nathan said nothing homophobic. Chill.

He's your typical straight dude.

by Anonymousreply 254February 11, 2022 3:22 PM

R253 Interesting. Jun Whan Cha is another male Asian skater who I think is 100% fruity. The cricket club must have been so fruity when Jun, Yuzu and Jason trained there, not to mention the coaches, choreographers and staff. So Jun and Juzu should know sonething about gay community and gay lifestyle. I just can't picture Jun, Juzu or Vicent romantically with a girl at all, it would be too awkward.....

by Anonymousreply 255February 11, 2022 3:26 PM

Sarah Hughes looked like an awkward stork on skates.

by Anonymousreply 256February 11, 2022 3:30 PM

But I'm an awkward stork with a gold!

by Anonymousreply 257February 11, 2022 3:36 PM

Sara Hughes skated like a cow, even her crossovers were lousy. All The Hughes go to Harvard, daddy is connected.

by Anonymousreply 260February 11, 2022 3:48 PM

That's great for me though, because that means I'm connected too. Plus, I still have my gold. PLUS, I'm a Harvard grad.

by Anonymousreply 284February 11, 2022 6:07 PM

R281 Hanyu and Cha are 100% gay imo. The big question is: Will they still marry women (Hanuy’s case maybe soon if he ends his career) despite getting to know openly gay men like coach Brian Orser and his partner, Jason Brown and many more at the cricket club?

by Anonymousreply 285February 11, 2022 6:10 PM

Is Daisuke Takahashi gay? Now, I really liked his skating.

by Anonymousreply 286February 11, 2022 6:15 PM

R286 Daisuke is glass closeted, he doesn’t hide it and it’s obvious to anyone who recognizes fabulousness. I can’t see him marrying a woman at all although he is almost middle aged by now. Hanyu- I am not so sure, he could feel the obligation to get married and have children.

Did Jason Brown ever hook up with the men of Cricket Club, or was he too busy being besties to Medvedeva and hanging with his coach/mother Tracy Wilson?

by Anonymousreply 289February 11, 2022 6:20 PM

289 Yes, I wonder if Jason has ever had a boyfriend or has had sex. I would say yes because he is 27 already. But with Hanyu, who is also 27, I can totally imagine him being a virgin.

by Anonymousreply 292February 11, 2022 6:30 PM

Sasha Cohen is a total head case. I feel bad for her husbands

by Anonymousreply 293February 11, 2022 6:30 PM

I thought that Jason was dating Rohene Ward?

by Anonymousreply 294February 11, 2022 6:33 PM

R294, Rohene is his choreographer. Of course, that didn't stop Michael Weiss.

by Anonymousreply 295February 11, 2022 6:36 PM

R294 Really, how long has their relationship been going? Rohene is so much older and knows Jason from a young age. Is this grooming?

by Anonymousreply 296February 11, 2022 6:37 PM

R290, I found many skaters in my skating life to be virginal well beyond the typical age. You spend so much time locked up in an ice rink, it's hard to find time to meet people and do normal teenage activities. Unless you meet someone at the rink.

by Anonymousreply 297February 11, 2022 6:46 PM

WHET "I'm definitely NOT gay" Paul Wylie??

by Anonymousreply 298February 11, 2022 7:04 PM

R279, like Shizuka Arakawa, who at 5’5 is a couple inches taller than Shoma and Uma. After winning her 2006 gold, she went on to skate in shows, and still does, looking amazing at 40. She helped Hanyu be able to skate when he was a teenager and has been promoting skating in Japan, working as a sportscaster.

by Anonymousreply 305February 11, 2022 8:57 PM

Also, Mao Asada, who founded The Ice - the show Nathan and Vincent skated in in Japan. She now goes around the world for a travel show. Hanyu credits her for him learning how to land a triple axel.

R275 and when did you ever have a skate that wasn't the former?

by Anonymousreply 308February 11, 2022 9:22 PM

Figure skating experts, what is the general opinion on Johnny/Tara's commentary? I never liked Tara as a skater, but find her decent. Johnny, less so. I prefer them to the very annoying Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic though.

by Anonymousreply 309February 11, 2022 9:30 PM

R265, he was fixing his junk before one of his runs.

by Anonymousreply 310February 11, 2022 9:44 PM

R309, I generally like Johnny’s tendency to identify the jumps, speaking as a non-expert. He also points out things like, for instance, a hand down doesn’t get a deduction like a butt-on-the-ice fall. And I feel like Tara tends to have a similar style, identifying the jumps and giving backstory, only she does it more when women skate, while Johnny comments more on the men.

by Anonymousreply 311February 11, 2022 9:49 PM

Scott and Sandra managed to be both vapid and deceitful (tending to favor skaters who signed on their tour or they choreographed, respectively), but Scott was smooth.

Johnny and Tara benefit greatly from that smoothness in Terry Gannon. Tara actually used to be much better (back when she was calling events by herself on the live streaming NBC would have online); it's not that she's dumber now, but she has to be the bread to Johnny's butter, and some of their schtick ends up being for entertainment rather than calling the skaters on the ice.

Johnny is at his best when he's willing to call a bitch out for weak technique, but his pro-Soviet affinities have really been notable in these games (he might as well have had his tongue in Kvitelashvili's ass, and while Morisi represents Georgia, he's Russian-born and in the Eteri stable). He will probably be audibly orgasming when Trusova is skating, even if she falls three times (like usual).

Good question. Is Rosalyn Sumners still throwing single axels and shaking her ass on ice? Is Philippe Candeloro still flirting with skating audience fraus?

by Anonymousreply 318February 11, 2022 10:27 PM

R309, Tara actually isn't bad, I don't like Johnny... but both are infinitely better than Scott Hamilton who repeatedly would just use the same line for every skater, "Feels every note of her music."

by Anonymousreply 319February 11, 2022 10:29 PM

Tara and Johnny are also much better than Dick Button who only ever seemed to bitch about everyone's layback spins.

by Anonymousreply 320February 11, 2022 10:30 PM

Michelle Kwan should be in that group congratulating Nathan. I'm still so sad she couldn't put together two performances during the Olympics.

Evan Lysacek still looks great. But a car video?

Michelle is the best known ice skater without an OGM. Should have been hers at least once, in Nagano. SLC was completely her own fault, her own undoing. Had to be hard for her though. Someone like Nicole Bobek would give her eyeteeth, however, to have "failed" like Michelle. Talk about a waste of talent.

by Anonymousreply 324February 12, 2022 12:01 AM

When did Brian Boitano go bald? I didn't recognize him at first, until they posted names.

Will Zhu Yi compete in the ladies' short program? Has she suicided herself yet?

by Anonymousreply 326February 12, 2022 12:46 AM

Oh, the soldiers releasing the flags during the medal ceremonies are so dramatic!

A quick unfurling then back in position.

It’s cool.

by Anonymousreply 327February 12, 2022 12:54 AM

R324, she lost fairly in Nagano. I don't like Tara, but Michelle repeated what Nancy Kerrigan did... thought she had it in the bag and didn't skate with enough enthusiasm. Not as robotic and like it was a job as Kerrigan did, but she didn't emote enough for the judges liking. Tara did.

My favorite story about those games is that after the competition and before the ceremony, Michelle was upset because she thought she was robbed. The reason she thought so was because her father, Danny, was screaming it up and down and over and over. Michelle turned to Frank to ask her if it was true, and he told her no, Tara went out there and earned it. Once Frank told her that, Michelle accepted it... Danny did not.

Dick Button was a fine commentator in the "glory days" of the Olympics (1970s and 1980s). No, not glory hole days. I learned a great deal about skating and scoring from his commentary on ABC. Plus with 2 Olympic gold medals he deserves respect.

by Anonymousreply 331February 12, 2022 1:23 AM

The other reason skating has tanked in popularity in the USA is the scoring system is so weird. The 6.0 system with judges then ranking competitors after their free skate was a great system - too bad it was manipulated in 2002.

by Anonymousreply 332February 12, 2022 1:28 AM

"The 6.0 system with judges then ranking competitors after their free skate was a great system - too bad it was manipulated in 2002."

How was it a great system? Not that today's system is great, but the 6.0 system was better? Why? Factored placings? It was a mess. You probably just liked that era of skating better. I do too, but the scoring system wasn't any "better."

by Anonymousreply 341February 12, 2022 4:35 AM

R341 one thing that scoring system had that was better than the current one was you knew which countries were giving which scores. This anonymous scoring system is ridiculous and is only fostering the cheating they thought it was going to prevent.

Are/were there male skaters with oppressive skating moms and dads? Who were they?

by Anonymousreply 375February 12, 2022 10:25 PM

Sinitsina and Katsapolov continue to get such strange marks from the judges. Does anyone else who watched the short program think they were within 2 points of the French? Not uncoincidentally, Stepanova and Bukin (who, admittedly, are a fun if undisciplined team) get best marks of the season and move ahead of the Canadians and Italians and within a whisper of Chock and Bates.

The Eurosport announcers were pretty blunt about feeling that the technical controller was calling some phantom level 3s on both P/C and H/D, and expressing some consternation that the Russians were in second, let alone close enough to win gold.

by Anonymousreply 376February 12, 2022 10:35 PM

R376 I found the judging pretty accurate. Papadakis Ciceron have a comfortable lead. Hubble and Donahue are technically strong but their programs are lacking. Chock is too weak of a skater, Canadians, too.

by Anonymousreply 378February 12, 2022 10:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 381February 12, 2022 11:01 PM

I went to one Grand Prix competition in 2005 - Skate America in Atlantic City. Great time even though I was surrounded by frauen. Knitting during the practice sessions. One had snuck in hot dogs wrapped in biscuits and shared them with everyone. One of the male pairs skaters, Jonathan Hunt, sat with us and gracefully answered all of our questions. I touched Brian Joubert’s hand as he skated a lap after the medal ceremony. My favorite, Kevin Van Der Perren of Belgium, landed so many quads in practice that he had nothing for the actual competition. Evan Lysacek too. It was fun. ABC was still doing skating and it all felt first class. Nothing like today.

I don’t know anyone skating today.

As R424 points out, the opposite is also true. Fake snow is the base at some skiing places because they want to get the season started but there hasn't been significant natural accumulation yet.

by Anonymousreply 432February 13, 2022 6:54 PM

Norwegian, You will all get along just fine being number one, again.

by Anonymousreply 433February 13, 2022 7:06 PM

Why do we get so patriotic when it comes to the Olympics?

Does winning more gold medals make you a better country somehow?

by Anonymousreply 434February 13, 2022 7:29 PM

That new show with Morena B looks like a retelling of The Blacklist.

Her character is trying to be bad-ass like Red Reddington.

I’ll still watch, though. 😛

by Anonymousreply 436February 13, 2022 7:34 PM

Poor Steve K.

He’s all over the place now. Good thing he’s very compelling and interesting.

I wonder if they pay him more.

by Anonymousreply 437February 13, 2022 7:37 PM

Yes, people all over the world get super patriotic during the Olympics, especially those Swiss and their cow bells.

by Anonymousreply 438February 13, 2022 8:22 PM

And after the Olympics are over, 99.9%+ of the world's population doesn't give it one thought until the next games come around. Except the Russians.

by Anonymousreply 439February 13, 2022 8:33 PM

Man, Chris Collinsworths’ kid is even uglier than he is 😮

by Anonymousreply 441February 13, 2022 10:49 PM

R434, It's the one time we can celebrate "our" actions on the world stage that don't comprise invasions, geopolitical brinksmanship, climate change hastening, etc.

Butch straight women excel at bobsleigh.

by Anonymousreply 448February 14, 2022 4:04 AM

The women continue to get it done for the US. The only man to win an individual gold for the US so far is Nathan Chen.

by Anonymousreply 449February 14, 2022 4:05 AM

Okay, I’ve seen this performance about 3 times now.

🥴🤪

by Anonymousreply 450February 14, 2022 4:05 AM

Are they the same judges?

by Anonymousreply 451February 14, 2022 4:06 AM

[quote]I like Weir and Tara’s commentary. Ashley Wagner was the commentator for Four Continents snd she never shut up! I turn off the sound when she’s on. And her comments are inane! Rippon should school her.

I couldn't stand Wagner either during Four Continents. She's probably the Cris Collinsworth or Joe Buck version of figure skating commentators.

by Anonymousreply 452February 14, 2022 4:07 AM

I still like Smart and Diaz's Zorro program the best and they were fantastic tonight. I didn't know he is engaged to Madison Hubbell. He's cute.

by Anonymousreply 453February 14, 2022 4:15 AM

Hubbell and Donohue skate beautifully.

by Anonymousreply 454February 14, 2022 4:15 AM

Poor Paul and Piper. No oomph tonight. They looked distraught.

by Anonymousreply 455February 14, 2022 4:19 AM

Piper and Paul screwed up a major lift. I volunteer to console Paul.

Christine Brennan posted this on twitter:

"IOC spokesman just confirmed my reporting of a few days ago — the issue of who will win the team medals likely will not be resolved during these Games. It will be either Russia or USA for gold — and it could be weeks or months before we know due to Valieva positive drug test."

Fucking this little doping bitch. Now medals will be held hostage.

by Anonymousreply 457February 14, 2022 4:20 AM

Madison gives me Tonya cut-a-bitch vibes.

by Anonymousreply 458February 14, 2022 4:20 AM

by Anonymousreply 459February 14, 2022 4:22 AM

I love ice dancing. It emphasizes the artistry.

Free skating has become a bunch of jumps.

by Anonymousreply 460February 14, 2022 4:30 AM

The men are way hotter in ice dance

by Anonymousreply 461February 14, 2022 4:31 AM

Better the French win than those lousy dopers who shouldn't even be there.

by Anonymousreply 462February 14, 2022 4:33 AM

The French team was stunning- such passion and grace

by Anonymousreply 463February 14, 2022 4:34 AM

The French pair was amazing.

by Anonymousreply 464February 14, 2022 4:35 AM

That was breathtaking. They're on another level. It's art... MARY!

by Anonymousreply 465February 14, 2022 4:35 AM

That French should have gotten a rhinoplasty years ago.

by Anonymousreply 466February 14, 2022 4:35 AM

R457, such bullshit because it’s not just about the team competition. She should be banned from competing

by Anonymousreply 467February 14, 2022 4:35 AM

It seems to me that ice dancing is so fucking hard. You have to show such artistry while lifting and spinning in weird configurations

by Anonymousreply 468February 14, 2022 4:36 AM

R466, her name sounds Greek

by Anonymousreply 469February 14, 2022 4:38 AM

The woman is the French team skates like a ballet dancer—absolute grace

by Anonymousreply 470February 14, 2022 4:39 AM

That french guy has one hot ass. Bottom right?

by Anonymousreply 472February 14, 2022 4:41 AM

Renee Zellwegger looks like a freak with that fat suit and prosthetics for That Pam show. Looks worse than Sarah Paulson in Impeachment.

How awesome is that former Canadian that won for us a gold medal??

Fantastic!

by Anonymousreply 477February 14, 2022 5:00 AM

Guess the IOC is waiting on the checks from Putin to clear before giving the Russian skaters the team medal.

by Anonymousreply 478February 14, 2022 5:14 AM

I like watching the russian whores so hope Kamila can compete.

by Anonymousreply 479February 14, 2022 5:17 AM

Thing is, if Kamila was doped, you just know that the other ones were. They train at the same place, have the same doctor and coach. Their nutrition is controlled and they were taking the same things. Kamila just appears to have been unlucky that the drug didn't clear out of her system in time.

by Anonymousreply 480February 14, 2022 5:20 AM

I don't feel sorry for Kamila even though she's underage. I thought stupid as fuck that Adam Rippon defended her and blamed all the adults. At some point, teenagers need to take some responsibility for their actions. She knew she was getting into with doping.

by Anonymousreply 481February 14, 2022 5:27 AM

R481 What advantage does doping give her?

by Anonymousreply 482February 14, 2022 5:28 AM

R481 from what I've read it's not optional in Russia. It's state sponsored there so you have to do it or you're out, you can't participate in the sport at all. Global Athlete put out a statement saying that they've been told that by several ex-Russian athletes. And she's just 15.

by Anonymousreply 483February 14, 2022 5:32 AM

Then the child can go home until she's old enough to take responsibility for her actions.

The age needs to be raised to 18.

by Anonymousreply 485February 14, 2022 5:47 AM

Get into the real world, r485. And try looking at your own country, whichever it is.

by Anonymousreply 486February 14, 2022 5:52 AM

R452 she’s the worst. Every time Mai Berenice Maite would share, Ashley would say something like, now that’s a WHOA-man! I found it a bit racist.

by Anonymousreply 487February 14, 2022 5:53 AM

R476, "Granny" is the current U.S. Champion. FYI.

by Anonymousreply 494February 14, 2022 6:07 AM

NBC wants ratings. Kamila will bring that.

by Anonymousreply 495February 14, 2022 6:08 AM

Valijeva is cleared for competition. Apparently everyone can dope and cheat. It gets no consequences anyway. Fuck this shit. I am pissed. This doping case should lead to Russia being banned. Instead one of their athletes get to compete. How is this fair? I hope the judges give her shitty scores on purpose.

by Anonymousreply 496February 14, 2022 6:14 AM

R495 Ladies’ skating gets ratings no matter what, Kamila or no Kamila. Fair is fair & this is NOT fair.

by Anonymousreply 497February 14, 2022 6:16 AM

I hope she falls again.

I believe strongly in karma.

by Anonymousreply 498February 14, 2022 6:18 AM

R498 she will probably win a gold medal.

by Anonymousreply 499February 14, 2022 6:21 AM

Russia does not have an Anti-Doping Agency: they never did, and never will. They will never test their athletes honestly, let alone actually punish the guilty. This proves it.

It's some kind of coincidence that the one sample delayed for weeks was the positive one. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

If NBC had any integrity, they would push the ladies competition to the Cock app and barely mention it. They won't, though. They'll hype it because angry people might want to tune in to see her fall. Johnny Weir will remain silent until it comes time to fawn over his favorite Russian. He and Tara might need to go after this.

by Anonymousreply 500February 14, 2022 6:26 AM

What a travesty. And so unfair to the athletes who didn't cheat or have cheating coaches.

All the other women should hold up signs in the kiss and cry that read, "Say No to Doping."

This doper's gold medal will forever be known as tainted. She'll have no career outside of Russia.

by Anonymousreply 501February 14, 2022 6:29 AM

R499 She’ll probably steal a gold medal. There, fixed it for you.

by Anonymousreply 502February 14, 2022 6:32 AM

I used to see IOKIYAR -- It's OK If You're A Republican -- to point out bad behavior by GOP politicians that they get away with that would sink anyone else.

Guess that should now be IOKIYAR - It's OK if You're a Russian.

by Anonymousreply 503February 14, 2022 6:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 507February 14, 2022 8:24 AM

Such BS the IOC is saying they wont hold ceremonies for any events in which Valieva medals in... thats just here way of trying to bury and hide that theyre allowing something they shouldnt.

by Anonymousreply 508February 14, 2022 10:31 AM

[quote]I hope she falls again.

I[quote]I believe strongly in karma.

I hope so too. If it happens, I will laugh my ass off. I would love it more if she gets a silver or bronze and some lesser known or unexpected skater gets gold. It would be hilarious because plenty of people behind the doping brat would be seething.

by Anonymousreply 509February 14, 2022 2:21 PM

Hopefully she'll get a slow clap after her performance. However, Putin will probably decree that all non-competing ROC athletes show up at the ice venue to cheer her on.

by Anonymousreply 510February 14, 2022 2:40 PM

R481, it’s her body that suffers from this stuff and not Eteri’s or the doctor’s body. Everything that goes along with it. Under elite athletics, there shouldn’t be cardiac damage unless something is wrong. Endurance athletes sometimes have cardiac damage, but then they also overtrain and undereat. A person who is undereating will have the body break down muscle for energy, and the heart is a muscle.

by Anonymousreply 511February 14, 2022 2:46 PM

Number one effect of the female athlete triad health effects: heart disease. Heart problems like this are not found in animals after intense activity and also are not found in most human elite athletes. I’m more concerned about the “anorexia is ok” attitude of the team than about the doping. The doping is to mask the physiological effects of anorexia for a few years.

The IOC doesn't want her to skate R508. They, along with the International Skate Union and the World Anti-Doping Agency, wanted to extend a suspension that would have prevented her from skating in the women's competition. They were overruled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who found that Valieva was a "protected person" (minor) who would suffer "irreparable harm" if suspended.

As a result, the IOC have decided not to award ANY medals in any category that Valieva medals in. This already includes the Team Event, so none of her Russian teammates will be getting medals either.

I think it's unfair to the other countries -- Team USA won't get their Silver nor Japan their Bronze -- but there are probably legal reasons they can't only withhold a specific medal if the arbitrators have already ruled against them.

by Anonymousreply 519February 14, 2022 4:49 PM

None of this is surprising. The IOC is absolutely corrupt and has demonstrated this time and again over the years. Its all about bloated salaries, not offending 'certain' countries, television rights mega-cash, and money, money, money. A 3 ring circus has more integrity.

by Anonymousreply 520February 14, 2022 6:15 PM

[quote] They were overruled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who found that Valieva was a "protected person" (minor) who would suffer "irreparable harm" if suspended.

I guess this rule applies only to "minor athletes" whose country can pay out bribes and threats, but not for those who can't.

by Anonymousreply 521February 14, 2022 6:28 PM

Holy cow, Kaillie Humphries is fucking awesome!!

by Anonymousreply 522February 14, 2022 11:37 PM

Kaillie looks kind of rough for 36.

by Anonymousreply 523February 15, 2022 12:56 AM

The protected person for a minor is total bullshit. If Kamila wins gold, I hope she gets the cold shoulder outside Russia.

by Anonymousreply 524February 15, 2022 1:11 AM

If she warrants this “protected person” status, then she’s too young to compete fully with adults and bear the responsibility and consequences of skating “clean” (or not) like everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 525February 15, 2022 1:41 AM

Tara Lypinski stated on her Twitter that it was wrong for the ruskie to keep skating.

by Anonymousreply 526February 15, 2022 3:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 527February 15, 2022 3:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 536February 15, 2022 10:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 538February 15, 2022 10:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 553February 16, 2022 7:18 PM

Americans never cheat in sports.

by Anonymousreply 554February 16, 2022 9:18 PM

Americans haven't been banned from sending a team to the Olympics for constantly cheating... that much is for sure!

by Anonymousreply 555February 16, 2022 9:19 PM

The difference for American athletes who dope, though, at least recently, is that the dopers are stripped of their awards and shunned. Marion Davis is a good example of that. Lance Armstrong too. They aren't celebrated like the Russians, who never take responsibility but instead blame the West for their own bad decisions.

by Anonymousreply 556February 16, 2022 10:24 PM

R554, That absurdity misses the true larger point, to wit:

Of course, some Americans have cheated at sports! Pete Rose and Lance Armstrong are two of the most famous.

BUT we have never had such cheating developed, aided, abetted, and rewarded by the entire US Federal government!

by Anonymousreply 557February 17, 2022 1:09 AM

Marion Jones, R556. I think that's who you're talking about. I know it was an honest mistake, not trying to be a bitch. The track and field athlete who was once a darling until she got busted.

How the fuck did curling become the hipster sport du jour? Takes no athletic ability, more like bar shuffleboard being an Olympic sport. Maybe I answered my own question. It's an "every man" sport that any fat ass could do, so people are drawn to it. It's so meh, yet it's always on TV.

This is my first Winter Games that I didn’t sit down to watch on television…it’s easier to get bits and pieces on streaming video. The Russian athletes behavior, athletes competing via flags of convenience and other factors have really soured the games for me. Back in the day, I would take personal days off from work the day after the skating competitions so I could stay up late and discuss it with my friends around the world online. And get smashed off my port wine.

I watched the USA and NBC coverage which both had commentary. I don't know if Peacock included commentary.

Yeah, I've checked NBC, NBC Sports, Peacock, and USA, and none of them seem to have replays with commentary. Was just wondering if I was missing it somewhere.

I found it, apparently they're not doing the sport specific replays with commentary. You have to search for Primetime Replays and watch / skip through the entire feed from each night. Thanks.

I hope that Eteri bitch gets strangled in her bed by a Ukrainian freedom fighter.

I can picture some situation where some athletes who trained or coached by Eteri turn on her and go public on documentaries or podcasts similar to what happened with Bela and Marta Karolyi in the gymnastic world.

^I meant to type gymnastics world.
