To follow R1, below is the original thread.

“Starring” is a stretch, as far as Ellen’s role.

by Anonymousreply 3July 26, 2023 2:08 AM

She's the only reason I'd be interested in seeing it r3 but I see your point.

by Anonymousreply 4July 26, 2023 6:07 AM

R4 Yes. I think it looks to be a few clicks above typical Blumhouse fare, but Ellen Burstyn takes it there. I will watch it. I’m 56 and it’s hard for this movie to compete with the cultural significance of The Exorcist. The latter can never be repeated.

by Anonymousreply 5July 26, 2023 2:08 PM

Undercutting the worldview of the original by making an interfaith rainbow coalition more effective than a Catholic priest is cringe.

by Anonymousreply 8September 25, 2023 6:45 PM

Saw it last night. Pretty decent.

Maybe tried a little too hard to evoke the original....especially with the priest.

How do we feel about Pazuzu being replaced by Lamashtu?

The cameo at the end was very sweet.

by Anonymousreply 9October 6, 2023 12:23 PM

The reviews are unforgiving. David Gordon Green’s horror career nears its end.

by Anonymousreply 10October 6, 2023 12:34 PM

R9 Lamashtu makes sense. It's a good sign too that they put thought into that aspect, given the connection of that demon to Pazuzu. I'm hopeful I'll like it more than what the reviews seem to indicate.

Given the reviews however it's unlikely they'll proceed with the trilogy (?).

by Anonymousreply 11October 6, 2023 9:55 PM

The reviews have been mostly brutal, and Burstyn's role is about 10 minutes long, so it hardly seems like a reason to see the film.

by Anonymousreply 12October 6, 2023 9:59 PM

R11 they will go through with the trilogy if it makes money. It’s all about money for movies like this. You’re out of touch with modern day cinema. A movie can have a rotten score but if it makes money it will get sequels. But this will likely flop.

It’s terrible. I just got out of the theater.

by Anonymousreply 13October 7, 2023 4:23 AM

It won’t make money if it has terrible word of mouth, R13.

by Anonymousreply 15October 7, 2023 12:35 PM

It’s #1 at the box office.

by Anonymousreply 17October 9, 2023 10:56 PM

R17 that’s not saying much. It’s #1 but made $44 million worldwide. They spent over $400 million on this.

by Anonymousreply 18October 9, 2023 10:59 PM

400 million for 3 movies. Only one has been made.

by Anonymousreply 19October 9, 2023 11:02 PM

R19 they paid $400 million to acquire the rights to the movie. That isn’t what was spent to make it. The sequels won’t happen.

by Anonymousreply 20October 9, 2023 11:21 PM

I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t very scary. And there are looooong stretches where you don’t see the possessed girls and just get lots of talky exposition. Burstyn is okay but the part feels underdeveloped. Actually the whole film feels like it was condensed from a longer work. Like it could have been a limited series on Netflix or HBO.

by Anonymousreply 23October 10, 2023 3:53 PM

David Gordon Green’s horror career is finished. It should’ve died with the revolting Halloween Ends.

by Anonymousreply 25October 10, 2023 10:22 PM

Looks like they’re punting DGG off the sequels.

I hope Burstyn comes back hard because she doesn’t take shit from the devil

by Anonymousreply 27October 10, 2023 11:59 PM

They were so disrespectful to Burstyn with this cameo. The dialogue was terrible and the scene where she gets stabbed in the eyes? Sorry but no. It felt disrespectful and was done so cheaply

by Anonymousreply 28October 11, 2023 12:12 AM

I agree, R38. It seems many of these reboots shit all over the original stars by killing them off or, like this, giving her character a disgusting end. If she's in the sequels, I really hope her character's eyes were just damaged--maybe miraculously healed? --and she kicks that demon's ass. But what a shitty thing to do to a great actress, regardless.

by Anonymousreply 29October 11, 2023 12:23 AM

Don't worry R28. At least I don't have to come back for the sequels, if there are any. So it works out very well for me.

John Carpenter to DGG: How can you fuck up an Exorcist reboot?

I’m told Linda Blair appears at the very end?

by Anonymousreply 32October 14, 2023 10:58 PM

Yes she and Ellen Burstyn reunite in a very brief scene at the end

by Anonymousreply 33October 14, 2023 11:04 PM

and Linda yells "LICK ME!"

by Anonymousreply 34October 15, 2023 5:13 PM

This was a travesty. Especially what they did to Ellen Burstyn's character. I wanted to walk out of it but my husband was into it.

by Anonymousreply 36November 11, 2023 7:44 PM

They should've stayed in Haiti. That was the most interesting part of the film.

by Anonymousreply 37November 13, 2023 3:47 PM

Haven't seen it, but, lots of YouTube reactors say it's awful, hopefully, Ms. Burstyn was well payed for this shit.

by Anonymousreply 38November 13, 2023 4:15 PM

I liked it better than "Porky's."

by Anonymousreply 39November 13, 2023 4:17 PM

[QUOTE] hopefully, Ms. Burstyn was well payed for this shit.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 40November 13, 2023 7:39 PM

R38, in case you're wondering what the dreadfully unfunny, "Oh, dear" was about, the correct word is spelled, "paid" but one can easily understand how, if you don't spell that word often, one might think it is spelled, "payed".
