Tell Us More About Grace Jones

Writer Robert Guerrero

Have you ever seen her perform live?

Have you ever met her?

Did you ever hear any stories about her that people might have missed?

If someone wanted to start listening to her music fresh, where should they start?

I just love it when Dataloungers give their personal stories of celebrity. I've recently become fascinated with her and have been Googling interviews from the past.

I figured who better to ask for more info than this group!

I love Grace! Fantastic live performer.

by Anonymousreply 1February 18, 2021 2:54 AM

R1, that's exactly why I've been looking into her.

I ran into this video on Youtube of her singing while Hula Hooping and it was amazing!

The only singer who is able to sing Edith Piaf without trembling with her incredible talent and voice!

La Vie En Rose, she killed it!

Start with the "NightClubbing" CD. Where I grew up in the Midwest owning that Grace Jones LP was your admission to the secret society of fellow queers. Saying you loved Grace Jones was closeted Midwest 80s speak for saying you couldn't wait to move to the city and be a gay slut. Such great memories of that time and her music.

by Anonymousreply 4February 18, 2021 3:00 AM

R4, THANK YOU!! I just love stories like that. They have the CD on Spotify so I'm going to give it a listen now while I work.

Love that!

How can one describe Grace ? A legend,a true diva, living proof that you can be not conventionally pretty yet be utterly fabulous ? Honey they just dont make women like Grace anymore . Im not sure the modern world has what it takes anymore.

So fascinated by her as an actress when I was a child. I found it comforting and touching when I realized she was just a woman (when she bedded James Bond). I thought that she could be some highly magnetic animal, man, or witch?!!I was so mesmerized by her.

by Anonymousreply 8February 18, 2021 3:12 AM

Finally a "tell us" thread that doesn't require one to be an eldergay. Oh, who am I kidding?? I just turned 41. I'm a fossil. But, to answer you, OP. I've seen "late" Grace twice, both times at the Hollywood Bowl. Although she perhaps softened some of her ice coolness from her "One Man Show" days, she remained a ferocious, captivating and endlessly entertaining stage performer. Her supple voice was in quite good shape for being in her late 60s at the time. Anyway, if she tours again, don't hesitate to see her!

The only one in this generation coming close to her approach and her art is Roisin Murphy.

by Anonymousreply 10February 18, 2021 3:21 AM

R10 - LOVE Roisin! And, yes, there is most definitely a throughline from Grace to Roisin. Grace was obviously a huge influence on her.

A good friend swears she saw Grace Jones smoke meth out of a light bulb in the VIP room of an NYC club in the early 2000s

OP here’s Grace absolutely killing it live, from a few years ago.

She's amazing. Her music is so incredible and yet I don't know how to describe it - which is probably why it's so good.

I love introducing her music to people who don't know her. They immediately fall under her spell (much like her character in Vamp).

by Anonymousreply 14February 18, 2021 3:43 AM

I 'met' her at a party my father had. I put met in quotes because she didn't speak to me. But, she looked fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 15February 18, 2021 3:47 AM

I really love this performance, and Grace looks ridiculously beautiful.

She and Barbara Carrera are still my favorite female Bond villains. I love her music too, but I first saw her as May Day.

by Anonymousreply 17February 18, 2021 3:53 AM

She performed at a dance party held in Melbourne one year down at Shed 14, I think it was about 1991. She was supposed to be the midnight show but she proved herself true to her diva reputation and came on about 2.30am.

It was obvious she hadn’t done any sort of rehearsal as the backup dancers had to keep scurrying around to get out of her way. During her second song (Pull up to the Bumper?), she misjudged the stage and fell off into the crowd. Once she was pushed back up on stage, she screamed ‘Goodnight!’ and that was the end of it. I miss those days of drugs, dance parties and hazy memories...

R16 She’s cool as F but her normal ballad singing voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

by Anonymousreply 20February 18, 2021 4:15 AM

That's my all-time favorite version of "La Vie En Rose", and my favorite song by her, R3!

by Anonymousreply 22February 18, 2021 4:19 AM

OVERRATED and my friend's sister worked for her many years ago in New York and said she was MEAN.

by Anonymousreply 23February 18, 2021 4:40 AM

Someone on DL sat next to her on the Concorde, and I've always wished he'd gone into detail. He said she was gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 24February 18, 2021 4:42 AM

I saw her at the Greek Theater in Berkeley maybe 4-5 years back. It was on the tour that started at the Afropunk (??) performance in Brooklyn (with the white tribal paint).

A lot of SF gays were there but it was definitely an older crowd. Good opening band ... Blood Orange?

She started somewhat late, and was audibly shocked when her performance had to end at 11pm on the dot, as student housing is right next to the theater (in the middle of the UC Berkeley campus). When the lights were cut, she said “I guess they weren’t kidding about it,” lolol.

She was amazing, but I think I was just in awe of seeing her live. She was near the top of my bucket list.

She’s lived a life most of us can only dream of. She was even roommates with Jerry Hall and Jessica Lange when she was starting out as a model in Paris.

by Anonymousreply 26February 18, 2021 4:45 AM

I met her on three separate occasions within a space of 6 months in the late 1970's. Yes, I am an eldergay. I held an airplane for her and schlepped her bags across Miami International Airport. She barely spoke to me. However her outfit was truly iconic. She was wearing a burlap sack mini-dress similar to what Lucy wore in the Hollywood fashion episode, very high leather boots, AND airplane goggles with a leather helmet! About a month later, I stood behind her in a line to get into the Ice Palace on 57th in NYC. Later that summer, I saw her perform at the Limelight disco in Hollywood, Fl. She pulled me on stage when she sang I Need A Man, let me dance on stage next to her for a few minutes, ripped my shirt off and threw me offstage. I never saw or met her again.

by Anonymousreply 27February 18, 2021 4:51 AM

What about her song "I'm Not Perfect" from the mid-80s? Details? Music video???

by Anonymousreply 28February 18, 2021 4:56 AM

Saw here a couple years ago at the Hollywood Bowl, she was great. However, there was this big black guy in front of me who was scaring people because he had no idea she had a gay fallowing. Saying things really loud like F-in Fags, why are they here, F- homos, etc. When they got up to leave everyone just kind of took two steps back. His girlfriend didn't seem like she cared what he said.

by Anonymousreply 29February 18, 2021 5:04 AM

How old is this chick now? Is she British?

by Anonymousreply 30February 18, 2021 5:07 AM

She got to fuck Dolph Lundgren when he was at his hottest.

by Anonymousreply 31February 18, 2021 5:08 AM

My husband and I sat across the aisle from Grace Jones (and her much-younger boyfriend/boytoy) in the first-class section on an American Airlines flight from Miami to DFW. Grace was on her way to some James Bond-related event or convention in Dallas. This was in the mid- to late '90s.

Grace's brother (gay as a goose) sat in the row ahead of hubby and me. He turned around and asked hubby and me if we know where he could buy cocaine in Dallas. (We didn't.)

Grace had one of those straw hats on that covered her head and most of her face. Through the whole flight, she drank rum and ate nothing. Her boytoy, who sat in the aisle seat (allowing Grace as much privacy/protection as possible) was handsome.

I never heard Grace say a word. Her gay brother more than made up for that.

Grace has a memoir called "I'll Never write My Memoirs"! She met everyone, did all the drugs, showed up late for everything and has a famous interview with a British guy where she pesters him for rudeness. I love her dearly. "Pull Up to the Bumper" is one of my karaoke songs. She did the hoola hooping and everything for the queen's 60th anniversary.

by Anonymousreply 34February 18, 2021 5:24 AM

Sting wrote demolition man for her. He hated her version so badly. That the Police re-recorded it.

by Anonymousreply 35February 18, 2021 5:35 AM

A friend of mine saw her at some NYC club in the early 2000s, in a dark corner with a pile of cocaine in front of her. He said all you could see was the mound of coke and her big white teeth.

by Anonymousreply 36February 18, 2021 5:40 AM

We've had plenty of threads about Grace Jones before, when she was doing something relevant, especially.

The Redundant Copycat Thread Thief could have read all the earlier Grace threads, waited until Grace did something relevant and then posted, if necessary.

But Borderline McAttentionthief just couldn't resist creating ANOTHER redundant thread!

F&F this psycho OP.

I'm not contributing anything more to this thread, except the pre-existing thread that most identically matches what the OP posted:

Saw her in an NYC club in the early-mid 80's. Lots of music showcases going on for a music magazine, NME I think. She was staying above the club--or partying there? Who knows!

Anyway, there was a staircase to the right going upstairs near the entrance. As far as I was concerned, it went to nowhere, I wanted into the club!

Out of nowhere, Grace was sitting at the bottom of the staircase wearing nothing but a hooded terry robe. White against her incredible skin. Regal and relaxed. Lapping up all the attention. Very little talk. Oceans of charisma.

Nobody could believe it, but people were cool. Lots of drugs back then. A 36 (?) year memory.

by Anonymousreply 38February 18, 2021 6:03 AM

I was lucky to see her at a small club in D.C. in '99. The two straight guys who were with me had no idea the crowd was going to be 99% gay.

I loved reading about her in Warhol's Diaries. He was very concerned that she was spending all of her money on fur coats. They went to the Schwarzenegger - Shriver wedding together.

My brother used to see her all the time at clubs. She was always late. Like, hours late. It became a joke that if she was schedule to go on at midnight, make sure to get there by 5am because she won’t be going on until then.

by Anonymousreply 41February 18, 2021 11:17 AM

She has a limited singing range, and a certain range of talent, but her visuals are part of her art, and she knows how to work it.

by Anonymousreply 42February 18, 2021 12:05 PM

[quote] She was always late. Like, hours late. It became a joke that if she was schedule to go on at midnight, make sure to get there by 5am because she won’t be going on until then.

What's wrong with that?

by Anonymousreply 43February 18, 2021 12:06 PM

In 2015, I saw her at Afropunk in Brooklyn. She performed topless except for Keith Haring-style body paint. One of her bodyguards carried her through the crowd on his shoulders. Her performance was electrifying.

by Anonymousreply 45February 18, 2021 1:38 PM

R31 speaking of Grace and Dolph. Does anyone remember the interview she gave, I think it was The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (maybe it was Merv) , where she brought Dolph on with her and talked about how she was dating him and his identical twin brother (he didnt have a twin brother)?

by Anonymousreply 46February 18, 2021 1:59 PM

I worked at her record label in the 90s. Her sell date was long gone but the owner Chris Blackwell had a soft spot for her, she was also freniemes with his wife Mary - she introduced the two of them. Always short of money, always spent more than she made and then would come into the office screaming for money. During her drug days she was on her way to a photo shoot, had them pull over the car to use the bathroom and climbed up a tree and wouldn't get down.

Her untalented brother Chris was a mess. Always scamming for free CDs saying he was needed them to donate to an AIDS charity or something or other and then would sell them for money. Eventually he was banned from our offices. Fancied himself a singer but couldn't staple a tune to his hand if he needed it. Good times.

She created a larger than life diva personality that would classify her nowadays as schizophrenic or chemically imbalanced.

R51 Sweetie, Grace Jones was still associated with Island up until the early 90s. They published her catalog and were still trying to get her to record. In 93 she was supposed to put out a new EP for them, there was a big fight because Judy Troilo who was head of artist relations at Island wanted to use a younger and new artist to do the product development and Grace had her heart set on Eiko Ishioka who was hot shit for her costume work with Dracula. That was way beyond their budget and Grace became uncooperative and nothing got done. But anytime Grace needed money she would come to Chris who would grudgingly give her some to get her to go away.

also when CB was in talks to buy Def Jam he had me personally ask Lyor Cohen, who was heading Rush Management if they wanted to take on Grace Jones as a client. Of course he laughed in my face -- Rush Management managed young hot rap artists and producers, NO ONE wanted Grace.

Please, my tea is poured straight. Don't sip it if you can't take it.

by Anonymousreply 57February 20, 2021 5:33 PM

I think that she's one of the most stunning women in music ever.

Love this song and the video. Some of the people in the video are instantly recognizable, but I've never been able to find out who the others are. Supposedly they're all friends of Grace's.

At least two people in the video - Keith Haring and Tina Chow - later died of AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 64May 19, 2021 3:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 65May 19, 2021 3:54 PM

Her feet are laughably enormous, like a black Olive Oyl.

by Anonymousreply 66May 19, 2021 3:57 PM

I have posted before about when I had a summer job (no pay) after freshman year of college answering phones at Warhol’s factory. Met a ton of these people that summer and the next when I did it again. Grace was very nice and I remember her being pretty intelligent. Her voice is actually always that dramatic and low and scary, even in casual conversation. Brigid Berlin hated her (Brigid worked at the factory also and I loved her so much). Brigid thought she was complete fabricated bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 67May 19, 2021 4:03 PM

R13, I don’t really get it- where is she without all the production? An off key speak/sing/slow strut- this vid is kind of a lesser Cher schtick.
