TCM has too many hosts

Writer Christopher Lucas

I like Mank and the Aussie girl.

Dave Karger is so bland and the professor too woke.

I guess the noir guy is ok if you like that sort of stuff.

[quote] I guess the noir guy is ok…

Eddie Muller is the single most knowledgeable and witty host they have

I like all of them, although Alicia needs better wardrobe people

by Anonymousreply 1November 26, 2023 5:16 AM

Eddie Muller is awesome. I met him at a film festival. Very nice man. And, yes, he's very knowledgeable, he'd take questions and he knew EVERYTHING

I can’t help it. I live on Noir Alley, am a member of the TCM Wine Club and take TCM cruises for my vacations.

by Anonymousreply 3November 26, 2023 5:38 AM

Love Eddie. His work in film restoration is commendable.

by Anonymousreply 4November 26, 2023 5:38 AM

Sorry to disparage Eddie. I don't see him much since I don't watch the noir show. He seems liked so far.

by Anonymousreply 5November 26, 2023 5:41 AM

Too many hosts equals...too many cooks

Alicia's knowledge is encyclopedic. And she's the sweetest person.

by Anonymousreply 7November 26, 2023 6:07 AM

They're all good but I miss Robert Osborne.

by Anonymousreply 8November 26, 2023 6:19 AM

Alicia went through a period where she had a different hairstyle every month. I’m glad she finally settled on the Grace Kelly look.

by Anonymousreply 10November 26, 2023 6:43 AM

Alicia, The Professor, Noir Guy and Mank. Sounds like a Gilligan's Island reboot.

by Anonymousreply 11November 26, 2023 7:02 AM

And your mom has too many gentleman callers.

by Anonymousreply 13November 26, 2023 7:30 PM

I love them all in their own way and I’m definitely hoping to attend the 2025 Classic Film Festival - has anyone been? I know we’ve had threads in the past and I believe someone had been.

by Anonymousreply 14November 26, 2023 7:37 PM

Who was that first female host they had? She was terrible. Glad they got rid of her. Dave Karger is too much of a fan boy, but I don't really mind him.

by Anonymousreply 15November 26, 2023 7:41 PM

What happened to Robert Osborne?

by Anonymousreply 16November 26, 2023 7:43 PM

I’d like to worship Mank’s feet

by Anonymousreply 17November 26, 2023 7:46 PM

I can't stand Dave Karger!

by Anonymousreply 19November 26, 2023 7:54 PM

r19 he's got a huge mouth like Joe E. Brown. Bet he can shove a lot of dick in there.

by Anonymousreply 20November 26, 2023 8:15 PM

I've been to the festival r14. I'll answer any questions.

by Anonymousreply 22November 26, 2023 8:29 PM

Thanks, I would love to hear if you felt it was worth it. Are the programs basically all day? I assume it’s a mix of screenings, Q&As, cocktail parties? Are there any tours? I use to live in LA - actually right by the Chinese Theater - but I have more of an appreciation for Hollywood history now.

by Anonymousreply 23November 26, 2023 8:55 PM

Tiffany Vasquez r15 and yes she was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 24November 26, 2023 9:09 PM

It is mostly screenings with a guest speaker interviewed for like 15 minutes before the screening. It goes continuously all day in different venues. They have about 5 things going on at once so you can choose from that. The downside is sometimes the stars they advertise don't show up but most do.

There aren't any tours but there are hour long q and a's. I saw DL fav Lee Grant when I went.

There are different tiers of tickets which basically dictate your place in the line. I had the top tier one year where you are guaranteed entry to everything (including the hot ticket of Leo DiCaprio honoring Scorsese). I had the lower tier ticket one year and there you have to wait in long lines and sometimes don't get in.

The Hollywood Roosevelt is the center of action. I stayed there one time and you really felt apart of it all. You see Eddie and the staff all over the place. They are very approachable. I commuted from the valley another time and felt less into it that year.

They used to have a big star (Michael Douglas, Miss Dunaway) do an hour long interview they'd tape for TV but they seem to have stopped that in recent years from what I've heard.

They also have opening and closing night parties and the Roosevelt bar is open all day. It's a nice experience overall but of course depends on who the stars are and if they suit your interests.

Tiffany was yet another TV network attempt at wokeness that misfired.

by Anonymousreply 26November 26, 2023 9:13 PM

Is Jacqueline Stewart still there or did she run back into the arms of academia after she realized they were only going to give her one appearance a week on late Sunday nights, and had her tape a new, woke intro to Gone With the Wind?

by Anonymousreply 27November 26, 2023 9:20 PM

I like her silent film intros.

by Anonymousreply 28November 26, 2023 9:31 PM

"Dave Karger is so bland and the professor too woke."

Play Misty for Me, Dave.

by Anonymousreply 29November 26, 2023 10:05 PM

R27's complaining about wokeness leads me to believe he's probably busy banning books about Rosa Parks from his local library

by Anonymousreply 30November 26, 2023 11:14 PM

R27. I believe she is now in charge of Academy Museum and making two or three times what she did at O of C

by Anonymousreply 31November 26, 2023 11:57 PM

Why they have never hired Bobby Rivers is something I don’t understand. He’s perfect for TCM. I believe he writes for Ben now.

by Anonymousreply 32November 27, 2023 12:16 AM

[quote] what is O of C R31

The Oniversity of Chicagu, obviously.

by Anonymousreply 34November 27, 2023 3:24 AM

Dave is playful in bed and has a very thick one.

by Anonymousreply 35November 27, 2023 3:51 AM

Robert Osborne was the warm, witty, comforting gay uncle I never had. He was a tough act to follow.

by Anonymousreply 36November 27, 2023 7:30 AM

It would be nice if they would play some of Osborne’s intros sometime.

by Anonymousreply 37November 27, 2023 7:44 AM

I miss Robert Osborne every night at 8. He was a scholar, a gentleman in every sense of the word, and a real film lover. His kind are long gone. As for the other hosts they are a mixed bag. The Aussie has grown on me, but the little gay guy is too happy and overjoyed by the movies he host. One of the things that I like about Eddie is how fucking smart he is. As for the professor she is very smart, and knows more about films, outside of Eddie than the others. And Ben- well I have had a crush on him since day one. Whenever some homo complains of " wokeness" my question is what is wrong with talking about the background, bigotry, and unheralded artists of old movies? Should we walk around and act like " Birth Of A Nation" wasn't racist? Maybe R27 is just a bigot- I don't need to be "woke" to see that.

by Anonymousreply 38November 27, 2023 9:12 PM

The only one I wouldn't miss is Mank and his straight-out-of-Wikipedia-and-the-IMDb intros.

by Anonymousreply 39November 27, 2023 10:06 PM

Mine is minor with TCM. The sets. They are too sleek and look like a Starbucks. Also, there is no time reference in the sets. The Aussie chick blabbing about a movie at 11 pm, and the lighting looks like sunshine is streaming through the windows. As you can tell, THAT annoys the fuck right out of me.

I know, I KNOW!

by Anonymousreply 41November 27, 2023 11:35 PM

I haven't noticed the sun streaming in on the sets at night...but I will look for it now!

I don't mind the look of the sets. At least they aren't sitting in an old cinema like Siskel and Ebert.

by Anonymousreply 42November 28, 2023 3:38 AM

At a get to know TCM event on one of the cruises Mank was pretty honest about how he had to "deal with the idea of new hosts."

I think he meant that he thought he'd become the main host like Osborne and maybe add one other but now there are a bunch of them.

by Anonymousreply 43November 28, 2023 4:24 AM

R38 As much as I tend to dislike virtue signaling/pandering, I have no problems with TCM saying whatever about the films’ context or putting disclaimers on them, just so long as they never censor them.
