Tasteful Friends-Mismatching Laundry Appliances

Writer Robert Guerrero

Perusing the Air Conditioning Thread about the ladies of Suburbia, one lady was taken to task for having a mismatched Washer and Dryer. Now I grew up where both my grandmother had a mismatch, both had Whirlpool dryer, but one had a Maytag washer, the other a GE. My mother had matching Whirlpools until the washer died in the mid-90s and she got a Maytag. When my Great Aunt died, my mother got her Whirlpool dryer, keeping the mismatch going.

My question is: Is this common? Or out of the ordinary? One does want to be tasteful but one doesn't always have money, and one also wished to be practical and not throw away perfectly good appliances. Your thoughts.

nobody cares whether your laundry room appliances are coordinated.

I think when you sell, buyers want matched appliances - and not 20 years old

What R1 said. No one that I know would replace a perfectly good appliance simply because another needed to be replaced and they felt they needed to “match,” unless it’s a kitchen rehab and everything is being replaced. Washer/dryers are not typically on display the way a fridge or oven is, so most people don’t care if they “match,” as long as they work.

Whenever I visit the house of a new acquaintance, I always make it a point to sneak a look into their laundry. If I find mismatched appliances, I leave immediately (right after helping myself to any drugs they might be hiding in their medicine cabinets). I delete their numbers from my phone on the way home and refuse to answer calls and texts afterwards. Life is too short to waste in the company of tasteless people who can’t be bothered to keep their appliances matched.

I've lived in my home for 15 years. The washer was old, maybe from late 80s into the 90s, but it still worked. As long as it works, I'll keep it. I replaced my dryer since moving in, so there is no match. It doesn't matter to me. I like basic appliances without the fancy bells and whistles. If something breaks, it's more expensive.. plus another gadget feature to go wrong. Now, finding basic appliances are harder to find.

Same as r5. However, I would recommend you buy the same capacity machine to match the other. When my washing machine broke I wanted a larger capacity (large enough to wash a king size blanket). When I do a full load of laundry my tiny dryer can't handle it all. When the dryer breaks I will get a larger one, but chances are the washing machine will have been discontinued by then so I imagine always having a series of mismatches.

Most people have mismatched appliances today because the new appliances are shit and only last a couple of years. If your appliances are pre-2000 era they were built to last for decades. Everything made after that was designed to wear out or malfunction after a couple years of use.

R7.. That's my feeling, too. I agree that the older models were made much better than the models, today. Even the tried and true brands, such as Whirlpool, Maytag and GE aren't that good anymore. A lot of parts are made in China..then assembled in the USA. That's why I'm still holding on.. lol. I'll use the washer until it dies.

My best friends parents just replaced their washer and dryer from 1968 ! The only reason they did is because they couldnt get parts and no one these days knew how to repair them. His mother hates the new ones and now sends their clothes out to a service! I,on the other hand,am on my 3rd washer and second dryer in 10 years. I could give a rats ass if they match or not,my washer is white and my dryer is red.

So my family is normal. That's a first lol.

Concerning brand names, Maytag no longer exists as an independent brand. It's owned by Whirlpool and they shut the factory down. When you buy a Maytag, it's just that label on a Whirlpool machine. Whirlpool also owns Amana, but they still make their own from their factory. Strange. Just a fact for you all.

My parent's laundry room cabinets matched the kitchen cabinetry. The laundry room was situated right off the kitchen, everything was custom so if they upgraded their washer and dryer they would move the older set to the basement. The same would apply if one appliance was no longer of use, they would keep the working appliance and move it to the basement. I suppose the older sets came in handy if you had extra wash to do on certain occasions.

Do try Asko washers and dryers.
