SUCCESSION, Season 4, Thread 3
Robert Guerrero
I don't think the Guardian does a good job of ranking the characters, because there aren't any criteria. But it did a great job of describing them.
I think Stewy should have ranked higher because he allows his humanity to function when he can, while being cold eyed ruthless at all times. A good character.
Greg should have been ten in the top ten. He's a jester and his high water mark was "Who needs a soul anyway?" since then he's been suspended in mid-air. I chalk it up to the writing not being as good as they've tricked everybody into thinking it is.
Kendall should have been higher because he's become an object of empathy and pity, rather than scorn and tedium, even as he's stuck in a loop of playing Charlie Brown to the top job's football
Agree with Tom. Probably the best constructed, most complicated, fully rounded of all the unblinking opportunists. They beautifully allowed him to sum himself up in the last episode and I think he's kind of rocking since he lost his fear of the family (if not of Mattson.) Matthew McFadyen is a STAH!
Love that Gerri ranked highly because she's a great character, also well rounded, if subtle.
Roman is another full developed character now, except he's a mess, Kendall without the drugs, and we need to see him fall because there's not a lot there other than performing for love and approval he'll never get.
I can't not have Logan as #1. Like Kendall, despite everything, you don't hate him, even as he repels you. His cruelty makes sense. Beautifully written, beautifully performed. His absence leaves a hole they're struggling to fill. I said to a friend today I think it will all make sense once it's all over, probably worth a binge from S4.1 to S4.10. I feel like we're watching three shows of multiple parts. I've been kind of critical of S4, obvious highs and lows to me and I would have expected it knocked out of the park every episode in the swan song. I think they're great at characters but less great at pacing and plotting. It is good they're going out now.
Finally, I save Alexis for last (kiiiiiiiiidding), but Marcia should have ranked higher. While circumstances prevented it, she was a fascinating character and people still talk about her here and over at Reddit. Something captured imaginations. In S1, whatever toughness she has (and there's plenty) she also seems to have genuine feelings for Logan and him for her. Were they meant to be the Macbeths? (Are Tom and Shiv going forward, for that matter?) Between the writing, the casting and the performance to my mind they somehow created the greatest character that almost was. I don't think she's going to upset the apple cart at the last minute but I'm hoping she delivers something in the last couple episodes on the basis she was gone so they really didn't need to bring the character back for S4. She could have stayed in Milan shopping and grieving. Don't know what she does, but hopes it's something. I'm a sucker for that character.
