Six Feet Under

Writer William Jenkins

I am re-watching yet again and would like to read about some thoughts and opinions on one of my favorite shows ever. Favorite character? Favorite actor? Favorite story line?

Francis Conroy was incomparable.

My favorite performances were from Michael C Hall and Justine Machado. Has perhaps the best series finale ever.

One of my favorite shows ever. I loved the acting of Fances and Lauren Ambrose. The scene with the family when they're burying Nate was one of the most powerful I can remember. I was shocked when he died. And yes, one of the best finales ever and the last 5 minutes were perfection.

I loved Michael C. Hall's David probably the most, and though her character irritated some, Rachel Griffith's Brenda was always fascinating. Nate was a jerk, didn't like David's cop boyfriend (didn't see what David saw in him), liked Claire for the most part, liked the Mom, loved when Kathy Bates had a guest star arc, and agree that the series had probably among the finest endings of a series ever.

Also liked Freddy Rodriguez.

Nate's girlfriend before Brenda, Lisa (Lili Taylor), was so fucking irritating.

I loved the show and still think about it. But I do not think I could watch it again. It was too emotionally draining.

A favorite moment was when Rico had to run up to Brenda and be like you forgot this funeral flag for the front of the car. It was always hilarious to me.

Great series. Got flakey towards the end. Writers too high?

There season promos were always works of art unto themselves.

I love Michael C. Hall because of Dexter.

Peter Krause was perfect as Nate. And absolutely gorgeous those first two seasons in particular.

loved the Chenowiths in all their dysfunction.

The whole cast was wonderful. Not a weak link among the main cast

by Anonymousreply 14October 13, 2019 3:04 AM

It really was stellar television. I can even forgive the bizarre Lisa story arc. God, I loved Joanna Cassidy as Brenda's mother. LOATHED Billy

Freddy Rodriguez is a fave of mine and wonderful actor. There was a scene in a bar where he was upset and he was perfect.

by Anonymousreply 16October 13, 2019 3:15 AM

Nate never seemed like he was acting to me.

by Anonymousreply 17October 13, 2019 3:16 AM

The character of Nate turned out to be a jerk, but Peter Krause's performance was excellent.

by Anonymousreply 18October 13, 2019 3:19 AM

Thought Nate/Peter Kruse was gorgeous. Wished he had turned out to be a gay character too. I was lucky, got the whole series on DVD when Tower Records had a closeout sale.

My favorite episode was when Brenda and Nate posed as potential clients at rival funeral homes. Brenda was hilarious!

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2019 4:29 AM

I definitely wanted to see Nate’s dick. I have a feeling it was huge

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2019 4:38 AM

This show and Breaking Bad are my two favorites. Sopranos, Dexter, and The Wire not far behind.

Couldn't agree more. I'll watch anything with Joanna Cassidy but still use a mental picture of Jeremy Sisto to get inconvenient erections to go away.

All the characters, were, by and large, awful and unlikable. From watching the show I came away with this impression. The Fisher family was a mess to begin with, but the death of the father made them even more self destructive and irrational; Ruth has ill-advised affairs, David is heavily closeted and entangled in a tortured relationship, Claire is a directionless druggie, Nate is a shallow ne'er do well who is so fucked up he fucks a strange, anonymous woman(Brenda) who makes her pussy available to him. The show goes on like that, with the Fishers acting like idiots and getting involved in terrible relationships. Nate even ends up married to Brenda, the compulsively promiscuous, mentally unstable woman he hooked up with. Then Nate dies. And what do you know, after the initial shock the Fisher family rights itself and becomes happy and purposeful. Ruth finds her calling by running a doggie day care enterprise (?). David and his lover Keith settle down into contentment with two adopted sons. Nutty Brenda settles into motherhood with her and Nate's baby and Nate's daughter Maia, completes her education, becomes a therapist, of all things, and remarries. Claire goes on to a new life in New York and becomes a photographer/teacher and eventually settles into marital bliss with the freeper lawyer she'd been involved with years ago. As the New York Times put it: "and they all died happily ever after. "

Six Feet Under and HBO set the standard for quality series programing, IMO.
