Having a hit song isn't necessarily the hallmark of a successful career. Too many hit songs are one hit wonders from people who are never heard from again. Is that a successful career? Maybe, but doubtful. DL goddesses Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters don't have hit songs in their resume either, but have had great careers.

I would say it more than delivered. If you look at the percentage of contestants (not just winners) who went on to have success, plus the ones who are still working in the business that appearing on AI jumpstarted for them, it's a decent number.
I think the reason you don't hear as much about the newer winners/contestants these days is because whatever that management team was that would sign them really does nothing at all to promote them. The producers of AI learned a while back (taking a cue from The Voice, which is much more popular) that the audience no longer gives a shit who wins. The show is the star. The Voice has been able to run for 12 successful years and has never produced one single success story. Nor did they really try. So why should AI bother? Anyone who goes on either of those shows these days thinking- "I'll be the one to break through!"- is fucking delusional. Being on those shows is as bad as having to start from square one.

I'm not the one who made that comment, R27, but there are plenty of music acts who tour and have a following who have never had a hit song- Phish being the first one who comes to mind (though that's a bit disingenuous since they have had plenty of bestselling albums). But there are a lot of lower level acts who can eke out a living doing what they love and being supported by a small but dedicated fan base. Taylor Hicks is one of them. People still show up to see him. He can't sell out an arena, but he can put a club tour together in certain areas and do well with it.

Mormons are like Muslims, Ultra Orthodox Jews or hardcore Evangelicals. They only allow their kids to associate with their kind and it creates a distinctive culture, an echo chamber and codependency. Mormons more so because Utah is a Mormon dominated state and basic.
That's why it's so hard for Mormons to leave their faith and even many Ex-Mormons are still affiliated with their churches because for many it's the only culture they know.

I hope things go well for him, honestly. On American Idol, he had a lovely voice, but he was so obviously under the collective thumb of his father and the LDS religious authorities. It also bugged me that the AI studio audience and the on-air personnel of the show treated what looked to me like very serious anxiety as "awkward cuteness." The kid could barely formulate a coherent answer to a question most of the time, and I don't think people saw his giggling and stammering for what it was. It looked to me like masking, just trying to get through the parts that were almost impossible for him: before and after the singing.
