Senator John Fetterman is DEPRESSED
Robert Guerrero
He’s now hospitalized.
My mood would suffer if I looked like that too.

That's awful. Do wonder how long he'll actually last as a senator at this rate.

Fuck. I just love the guy. I hope he finds treatment that works.

Not for long. PA requires a special election and the next one will be next year, during the presidential campaign. And…campaigning for the office would begin almost immediately so we’d essentially be without a senator until the election.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 16, 2023 7:56 PM |
He's not going to step down except under the direst of circumstances. Let's hope he can power through.

Pennsylvania’s two senators are effectively exiled for now. Bobby Casey just had prostate cancer surgery.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 16, 2023 8:02 PM |
I really like him, but I'm not sure that running for that Senate seat was the best decision with his condition. I'm already sick of all these old people like Feinstein or McConnell. The Senate really needs fresh, healthy people who can fight for their constituents and fight against MAGAs and Republicans.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 16, 2023 8:04 PM |
It must be very bad if he checked into a hospital. How many insurance policies allow for expensive hospitalization for depression? I hope he didn't attempt suicide or something. That would be awful.
If they don't let him be he may never recover.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 16, 2023 8:08 PM |
Depression is very common after a stroke and other serious illnesses, often made worse by new medications and medication interactions.
Of course, he should hold his seat. If depression disqualified one from holding a job, half the American population would be on disability.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 16, 2023 8:08 PM |
It's not all that common it seems. Some doctor listed the statistic as 20%.
If the depression is disabling and puts you in the hospital - which seems to be the very definition of a disabling condition - then he should resign.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 16, 2023 8:13 PM |

He doesn’t get the same insurance as us peons. He now has primo insurance.

I love that humongous man. Hopefully, this is just a bad reaction to the medicine he has had to take post-stroke or seeing all of the Republican scums up-close in DC, and he will shake it off. We need you up and fighting, brother!
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 16, 2023 8:22 PM |
Democrats can't seem to catch a break...sheesh. I hope he gets the care he needs and pulls through. Two steps forward, one step back...

[quote]It's not all that common it seems.
The American Stroke Association:
Depression is a common experience for stroke survivors. It’s often caused by biochemical changes in the brain. When the brain is injured, the survivor may not be able to feel positive emotions.
Depression can also be a normal psychological reaction to the losses from stroke.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 16, 2023 8:24 PM |
Given his sheer size, he's unlikely to live very long, which is what I realize his recent stroke brought home to him. He is a smart, energetic man, but I think he has been in denial until recently that his height limits his lifespan severely.

Thomas Eagleton served as a Senator for almost 20 years despite being bipolar, having been hospitalized numerous times and undergoing electroshock treatment.
It came out publicly in 1972 when he was McGovern’s VP nominee; he left the ticket as a result but served in the Senate for 15 more years.

R36, nope, stalker. And you can try to obfuscate and attack. But he's been a liar from day goddamn one. With a huge out of touch, out of state push that was wrong for PA. He ALMOST lost to Oz, and that was unacceptable.
The identity bullshit politics charade needs to stop, and we need to run for our towns- NOT MSNBC. He infuriates me. (And, yes, I did buy shirts for Bay Area family. But we have to evolve from this model.)

His best move really would be to let Josh Shapiro appoint a new Senator who'd have a full six year term under their belt by the time they ran for re-election, rather than causing drama. Both of his conditions require time to heal and the pressure of being a US Senator will not help in that process.

Pennsylvania requires the position be filled in a special election held during a statewide general election, which is next year.
Shapiro would only appoint someone who would then immediately turn around and start campaigning to keep keep the job.

AXIOS:
Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) suffered a serious stroke in January 2022, eventually needing surgery to relieve cranial swelling. In a stunningly swift recovery, Luján returned to work just over a month later. Luján can get emotional talking about how lucky he feels to have survived the episode.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) had a minor stroke in May 2022 and was hospitalized for a week. Van Hollen returned to work quickly after that.
Former Sens. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) suffered very serious medical episodes while in office and underwent long, grueling recoveries before returning to the Senate. Both men had physical challenges afterward. There were also reports that Kirk had difficulty at times controlling his emotions following his stroke, although aides denied it. Johnson was reelected to another term in 2008, while Kirk lost to Democrat Tammy Duckworth in 2016.
Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) gave a stunningly forthright floor speech in May 2019 about being treated for depression twice – first as a college student and then in her 30s. Smith praised Fetterman in a Thursday tweet for discussing his situation.
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) also talked about being hospitalized for depression following Fetterman’s announcement:
| by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 17, 2023 12:26 PM |
The sad thing is his stroke could have been prevented. He knew he had A-fib and admitted he wasn’t taking his prescribed medications for it. Yes, he’s an adult and needs to be responsible for himself, but Gisele should have been keeping a closer eye on his health.
| by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 17, 2023 12:41 PM |
If he's the kind of guy who gets depressed over health issues then I can understand why he stopped taking his meds. His diagnosis of afib probably made him depressed or anxious, and he stopped taking meds as basically a coping mechanism.
Before any of you smartasses say that's stupid, keep in mind that coping mechanisms are often not logical in the least. Intelligence and logic often cannot override major anxiety or depression.

Of course he's depressed. He is unable to get those Benjamins from lobbyists. He's too handicapped by his medical 'issues' to carry their water.
Also how is it so wonderful to have severely mentally ill people making decisions in the Congress. And yes, if you have to have your brain zapped with electricity & have to be treated inpatient at a hospital for depression you have severe mental illness.

| by Anonymous | reply 106 | February 17, 2023 3:44 PM |
r106, ignoredar will never show you all the posts someone has written.
When you view an entry in your ignored tab, you are only going to get results that come from (a) threads you've visited since your last login, and (b) sometimes posts that the ignored person started.
For instance, r27 is also in "white women passing" and "New York Times op-ed" and "Britney Spear's family" but you didn't see those. I did, because I've been to different threads than you have.
| by Anonymous | reply 107 | February 17, 2023 3:50 PM |
You only see posts from thread that are common to both of you, and I’m not sure, but I believe it has to do with your watch list in addition to your recent posting history. You don’t see every thread they’ve posted in.
| by Anonymous | reply 108 | February 17, 2023 3:51 PM |
R108 is right, and I forgot to list that. Ignore will only show you (a) threads you've visited since your last login, and (b) sometimes posts that the ignored person started, and (c) sometimes posts they made in threads you've got on your watch list.
That's not always guaranteed, though. Ignoredar is tricky and limited, if you try to explain it fully it gets too confusing, and twice now I've seen people post instructions about it and they've been incorrect about some basics.

R12 let me try again: you wrote “…so we’d essentially be without a senator until the election.” I was trying to point out that I don’t see it that way—there would be an active, working senator for the remainder of the term upon appointment.
Sen. Padilla’s example is a good one; CA was *not* essentially without a senator…
Thanks

You’d be surprise how east y it is to do both, based on the way the Senate calendar / schedule works. Otherwise, 1/3 of the Senate (whichever of Class I, II or III is up that cycle) would be in the same boat. The impact is not what you suggest. Thanks

Um, I’m not talking about fund raising. Campaigning in Pennsylvania isn’t like campaigning in NY or California. There’s a lot more “meet and greet” out here. And, I can guarantee you that Republicans won’t be running Oz again and that their candidate will be out on the trail meeting with every union, every church group, every chamber of commerce right out of the gate. Oz was a terrible candidate that was loathed by both parties and that worked in Fetterman’s favor. It’s not going to happen a second time. And BTW, once Fetterman healthy enough to be back on the trail (and there was talk about replacing him if he couldn’t do it) they had him on a bus visiting every mall parking lot or anyplace around the state where he could stump daily.

R149, one could go hospital inpatient (psych) to avoid being bothered by police - for a while. But in a high profile case, the issue would have been brought up already by media or the police.
In 1994 a friend committed suicide in a mutual pact where the other party didn't go through with it. When my friend died, the other guy stole his credit cards, cash, and jewelry, and went on a pawn-shopping spree. When the po-po were looking for him, he conveniently checked into a psych hospital to give himself several days to find an attorney and to cook up a defense. He went to prison for a couple years anyway.

Pennsylvania schools usually always have a week off in February, or else a very long weekend around Presidents Day, it dates back to the energy crisis and was about the expense of heating schools during the deepest, coldest part of winter. It’s like Winter Break that most schools have in March. It’s a tradition like having the first day of Deer hunting season off that my friends from outside the state never could understood. Of course you always get the first day off, a quarter of the guys wouldn’t show up for school otherwise and it would be a wasted day. A trip to Canada was probably a chance for her to get the kids away from the American press for a few days and their relentless perusal of her for comments and was an easy drive fir just one parent. Perhaps Justin provided her sanctuary and she worked on some international alliances while there, or even had a hot affair with him.

What kind of discussion is this even? If being a Senator doesn't require being present, doesn't require being able to understand spoken words well and if it pairs just fine with the disability to sense any positive emotion then what is this job? Why is it so well-paid and comes with such prestige then? I am very sorry for Fetterman and his health problems but he is the wrong man for the job. Any job. Elderfrau is one of those cunts who thinks that anyone who is ill should just die in poverty. That's fun.

There are not millions of people in PA who want to be Senator AND who could win AND who are also qualified.

[quote]He lost a shit ton of weight.
He was already thinner in his official Senate photo, I noticed. It's hard to tell in the photos where the sunlight is too bright, but in the one where he's got his legs crossed, you can tell his color has definitely returned. I'm guessing he's had some much-needed physical therapy on top of mental health help.

I have elderfrau blocked for some reason, probably Trumpism or the more vile forms pf transphobia. Most of the people attacking Fetterman anywhere online right now are conservatives or just straight up trolls. Very few are actual Pennsylvania voters, let alone Democrats.
| by Anonymous | reply 244 | March 7, 2023 4:00 PM |
R239, you're actually right. All of us should have access to the care we need at any tome, regardless of income or ability to pay. I hope you support universal healthcare such as Medicare for all and expanded access to mental health services.
John Fettermn supports both, like most Democrats. His opponent Mehmet Oz, an actual doctor, opposes both, like the rest of the Republican Party.

And we're still paying for his Hospital stay for his life long depression.
How many days & how many dollars??

[quote] Every county sets its own calendar. Allegheny’s break is in April.
Schools in Pennsylvania are organized by school district (many of which are tiny), not county.
Also, there's Pennsylvania and then there's Pennsylvania, and R202 is obviously talking about rural PA. I randomly checked a number of school districts in suburban Philadelphia, and all have spring break in the week after Easter. None close for hunting season opening day - an idea that would seem utterly bizarre here.
In the Bradford Area School District, spring break is April 15-22. There is no "opening of hunting season" holiday, but the Thanksgiving holiday in 2022 extended through the following Monday. Deer season opened on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, so that could be the reason for the extra day. Then again, they also close on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, before the season opens, so maybe they just like long Thanksgivings.

This is not about universal health care. He is abusing this for political reasons. We'll never get universal health care when so many selfish people abuse it for this and for cosmetic surgery to change your gendered appearance.
He is taking up a bed and hospital services unnecessarily.

R249…you realize that the conversation has to do with a specific part of Pennsylvania, right? Who cares what Philly does in context of what we’re talking about. Braddock is in Allegheny County.

This isn't a fucking game.
| by Anonymous | reply 254 | March 8, 2023 12:57 AM |
[quote]possibly Shapiro too.
Nope. Shapiro has broad appeal. Not to mention that he ran against January 6 participant, Doug Mastriano. It wasn’t even a close race and it wouldn’t have been closer even if it were Fetterman/McCormick. If anything, Shapiro’s race was always expected to help Fetterman’s.

R264, alright. But they don't want to fuck Giselle Fetterman. Maybe AOC, MAYBE.
You're deeply confusing TRUE dislike and sexual attraction. (As am I, by reading "conservative men" as hot white guys.) This is dangerous and a fallacy. It's an immature, 12 year old boy, dead wrong, ego protection ideation.
It's not helping anything.

So, now Lurch's depression is now being called 'severe'. So this the lifelong depression he said he has suffered with, Severe, not opsie I had a stroke dpression.
He has now been hospitalized for 31 days. The stay for inpatient psychiatric sevices. 15 Days. More than twice the average..
Oh, guess its cause he's tall.

John Boy's docs need 2 more weeks to get his meds. right. So, in 32 days that have yet to stabilize his meds. Usual stay for a depressive 15 days. So, he is over 2x's the amount usually needed.
So, WTF meds can't they regulate in an extra 17 days?
WTF kind of MI does he really have that they can't regulate his meds in 32 days.
According to its site, Walter Reed does inpatient for ACUTE Psychiatric & Neuropsychiatric. So, which is it? Must be a bit more than being sad. Psychotic? Or is he in the Detox unit which is also inpatient?

^ Let Walter Reed know where you live, so they can send you the bills for his extended stay. And since you are medical experts he can stay with you & you can figure out his meds.
| by Anonymous | reply 282 | March 16, 2023 2:19 AM |
Military hospitals only bill for food. When my dad had a 12 hours open heart surgery (7pm to 7am) at Walter Reed in the dark ages, his case was so serious that he had to stay in the hospital for a month after surgery. After he got home he got a bill for $88.00 for food.
Fetterman is there so he can have privacy and have an excuse not to go to the office or deal with work. No reporter can get to him. I doubt that he needs that level of care. it's a privilege of the elite. 2
