Can we add him to the 'Push Actors' thread? He has nothing to offer but non-threatening lite-brown skin.

I'm delighted that TV keeps trying to make musicals work in episodic form.

But the track record is not so great. ZOEY'S EXTRAORDINALY PLAYLIST was just canceled after 2 seasons. CRAZY EX-GF lasted 4 seasons, but that was on the CW.

Anyone else remember GALAVANT? I loved that show.

Absofuckinglutely. Even if it seems doomed to have a small niche audience and will likely never make it past season one.

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2021 12:24 AM

Smegmadoon will be a huge hit on DL!

Does anybody know anything about this? I LOVE Kristin Chenowith and will resubscribe to AppleTV, if I have to, but ~ will it be worth it. Anybody know?

It's probably the gayest thing on TV, or streaming sites, without any explicit gay sex.

by Anonymousreply 8July 16, 2021 8:27 PM

It's produced by SNL bigwig Lorne Michaels. Which for me is not a good thing, but the first two episodes are ok. Spoofing the musical theme.

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2021 10:14 PM

Julie Klausner (Difficult People) is also one of the producers, apparently.

The show some cute chorus boys. I like the one with the handlebar mustache.

I expected to love this, since I love musicals, but was just...fine. It went down easily, it was well-made, I wasn't bored. But I mostly just sat there recognizing the musical references and thinking, "Oh, that's ____. That's sort of clever."

I think part of the problem was that I didn't care about the main couple, individually or their relationship. Plus, so far the musical characters don't have enough humanity, even as musical archetypes, so the whole thing kind of felt like real people visiting an amusement park and interacting with animatronic figures. The musical characters need to be human beings embodying the stereotypes...but they're not. They're just the stock characters. (Though Cumming came the closest with his gay number.)

I did find Aaron Tveit unexpectedly charming. I don't think I've ever liked him in anything (and thought he was terrible in Moulin Rouge!). But in this role, he actually sounded and looked good, and I could finally see it.

I’d rather accept a drink from bill Cosby.

by Anonymousreply 13July 17, 2021 8:46 PM

I’ll watch it if I can find a place to download it for free. I’m not paying for AppleTV

by Anonymousreply 14July 17, 2021 8:58 PM

It breaks my heart that Aaron Tveit is straight.

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2021 2:40 PM

I would watch it, but don't have Apple TV+

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2021 2:46 PM

Only Jane Krakowski is able make that last line of hers as funny as it was.

Nice show.

SCHMIGADOON is such a terrible name... for anything

by Anonymousreply 19August 14, 2021 5:05 PM

I'm a bit surprised. I figured any discussion of SCHMIGADOON! had legs on DL, even if people were posting about energetically hate-watching it (much like GLEE back in days of yore, or SMASH).

A handful of friends are watching it, but it doesn't feel like anyone here is. Are DLers not Apple subscribers?

by Anonymousreply 20August 14, 2021 5:13 PM

Because it’s awful R20. It ripped off Brigadoon.

by Anonymousreply 21August 14, 2021 5:14 PM

Reese Witherspoon's The Morning Show got a fair amount of attention at DL and that's an Apple+ show. Jason Sudeikis' Ted Lasso as well.

Apple TV has some pretty decent shows. I love The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, Central Park, Home Before Dark, Mythic Quest, and Truth Be Told.

Then what's the point? I can watch HGTV all day for that.

Without question, I am and SHOULD BE the ideal audience for this show. But I don't get it. It's not nearly funny enough and the songs possess ZERO wit. How they managed to get this turd greenlit with the talent attached is beyond me. They're almost too sincerely evoking those splashy movie musicals -- there's no real satire. No teeth to any of it. Just a bizarre bag of musical theatre tropes and conventions thrown up on the screen to no discernible end.

I've talked to a lot of industry colleagues and they're equally scratching their heads. And based on the reviews on the Broadway chat boards, I think a lot of theatre queens are having a tough time getting behind it.

by Anonymousreply 25August 14, 2021 8:47 PM

r25. At least some broadway talents got paid to do something during the pandemic and Broadway closed shop.

by Anonymousreply 26August 15, 2021 2:57 AM

I bought a new iPad and got three months of Apple+ free, so I’m checking out what’s available. This is terrible, like a John Mulaney SNL skit extended, and extended, and extended until it’s beaten to death with its own parody musical score. And Cecily only works in very small doses, very, very small doses. I’m keeping watch because I’m hoping it turns dark, like we find out at the end that they fell off a cliff and are in a coma with multiple limb amputations.

by Anonymousreply 27April 3, 2022 12:17 AM

Oh, this is getting dark, she’s going to open a clinic and start performing abortions?

by Anonymousreply 28April 3, 2022 12:50 AM

Kristi Dawn was so terrible in this. I’m generally a fan of hers, but here I felt like I was watching a seventh-grade girl playing the Wicked Witch.

by Anonymousreply 29April 3, 2022 12:55 AM

What the hell! If I was paying for this I would have demanded my money back.
