Roosevelt Island, NYC

Writer Harper Scott

So why didn't the gays take over Roosevelt Island and turn it into a gay mecca? It's really nice over there.

by Anonymousreply 28August 23, 2020 9:31 PM

That's a great idea actually.

by Anonymousreply 1July 18, 2015 11:34 PM

It's a pain in the ass to get to/from Manhattan.

by Anonymousreply 2July 18, 2015 11:35 PM

Is it nice over there? It always reminded me of those Eastern European apartment blocks. I got spooked when people were stuck in the cable tram for seven hours.

A couple friends of mine lived on RI for two years and I would go over there to visit sometimes. PIA to get to. Just one subway line, and the station is on the opposite end of the island to where the apartment buildings are so you have to walk a fucking mile. Not fun in the rain. It's odd, you are literally right in the middle of NYC but you don't feel like you're in NYC at all. It does kind of have an old-style Soviet apartment bloc look. Weird place. Nothing there except a grocery store, diner, and a few other little basic things. There is no bridge to Manhattan, but there is a bridge to Queens. Unfortunately, it's a pretty rough neighborhood in Queens so you never go over there.

Is that funicular still functioning? Always wanted to take it but never have

by Anonymousreply 5July 19, 2015 12:19 AM

That's not a funicular. You want a funicular, go to Pittsburgh.

by Anonymousreply 6July 19, 2015 3:41 AM

There are two funiculars in Pittsburgh, and one large enough for automobiles in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Interesting though, the idea for a cable tram across the the Ohio in Pittsburgh was bandied about a few years ago. At one time, there were over a dozen inclines in Pittsburgh.

The Peak Tram in Hong Kong looks cool.

You've been there, so you obviously know what a joy it is trying to get there.

by Anonymousreply 8July 19, 2015 8:07 AM

R4 gave a very good description. I might add, knowing that the island used to be a giant hospital ward gives me a kind of eerie feeling when i go there.

I floated through the air on a cloud of red metal. But seriously, it's not that easy to get to Fire Island but the gays love going there. That's the whole point. Make it hard to get to so it's not over-run with fag hags trying to cash in on gay culture.

Sounds like paradise. Secluded from the rest of NYC, fabulous view of Manhattan, and I like the slightly creepy vibe. I think it's very charming that there's only one grocery store and a diner. Yes, it's a pain to get to for NY standards, but many people all over the world are aching to get to NYC, and RI'ers are a just jump over a river. Plus, not as far as some god-awful commutes to far ends of BK, Queens, the BX and SI, even with more train line options.

by Anonymousreply 11July 19, 2015 5:29 PM

Even LA has a funicular. Of course it keeps opening and getting closed down when it kills people, but whatever.

I just learned what a funicular is!

by Anonymousreply 13July 19, 2015 6:37 PM

Is this because it is so close to "Queens"?

by Anonymousreply 14July 19, 2015 7:35 PM

I must have missed a handout, but what does it mean when the letters in a post are grey and a line is drawn through them? Who does that and why?

by Anonymousreply 15July 19, 2015 8:48 PM

Why no ferry? I'd rather a ferry than a tram

by Anonymousreply 16July 19, 2015 8:59 PM

If you twinks want to move there to be the QUEENS Directory, forget it. Roosevelt Island has a Manhattan Zip Code and the telephone exchanges are in 212. 646, and 917.

by Anonymousreply 17July 19, 2015 9:12 PM

So where do people on Roosevelt Island go grocery shopping? Queens? No bars? No night life?

by Anonymousreply 19July 20, 2015 8:45 PM

I've never been there. Apparently they have a whole advanced garbage tube system.

by Anonymousreply 20March 21, 2020 4:50 AM

I imagine it's the type of place that they don't connect to the city for a reason. Just like Co-Op City... the people living there don't *want* it to be easy to get to.

by Anonymousreply 21August 23, 2020 8:23 PM

Is it as expensive as Manhattan?

by Anonymousreply 22August 23, 2020 8:29 PM

You are basically correct R21 - RI was developed in the 70s as middle class housing - under Mitchell-Lama I believe but not sure - it was the epitome of then current ideas about utopian urbanity - which in many ways were a 360 from Jane Jacobs because of the state of the city in the 70s. The isolation was intentional and the residents were VERY against the subway stop opening in the 90s because of crime and crime did indeed go up - the city now is a very different place than it was in the 70s or the 90s regarding crime - the current uptick because of Corona notwithstanding.

I went there once. It’s very interesting to walk around (the ruins with all the cats is cool), but inconvenient to live on.

A guy took me there on a first date. He wasn’t from there, he just thought it was romantic. It took forever and it was freezing cold. We made out for a little bit before heading back to civilization. Terrible kisser. Bleh.

by Anonymousreply 25August 23, 2020 9:20 PM

Why would gays want to live on Roosevelt Island?

Its isolated and a pain to get to. Maybe okay for families trying to raise kids, but that's generally the last thing gay guys are looking for.

by Anonymousreply 26August 23, 2020 9:23 PM

Have the homeless invaded it yet? Maybe now is the time to move there?
