I don’t know why everyone is so fucking mad. Yes, he’s delusional and obviously not well, but there was nothing racist in what he said about Zayn! His father obviously wasn’t supportive. He never mentioned his father’s race or religion once.
Also, I do believe him when he says Simon “cast” the rest of One Direction around him. Louis and Niall were both vocally weak, Zayn was handsome with a great voice but was also painfully shy and threatened to walk off the show prior to being put in the band, and Harry was cute and talented but inexperienced. Liam could sing, had auditioned several times, had experience performing… how does that not make sense to people?

I do think Harry and Louis are the reason for the success of the band initially… Harry for his looks and charm and Louis for his big personality/memeable quotes/creating the video diaries which catapulted them to internet fame.

Liam just seems so average and bland and boring and awkward to me, even with the bi rumours. He’s like a Butlins entertainer, or some low-tier non-League footballer. His mumbling and stuttering just gives nothing.
Imo Louis is the sadder case of 1D, because in another life he could have made a very cute and charismatic pocket gay man, maybe a sparkly, witty, fun supporting actor in national theatre or a tv/radio host. Sad that his confidence and ‘glow’ drained away when he shacked up with his babymama.
Louis seems the only one of that group with a brain and some pizzazz. The others are pandering straight trainwrecks who would do anything to get a mention on Billboard, and have been from the jump (even Zayn, though that was only for money/due to outside pressure from family), but Louis seemed different in that regard—at least to start with.

It so happens I have a younger Zillennial sister who was a 1D fan when they started out, so I was more or less forced into getting to know the group (they were popular when I was in College, so obviously they weren't my thing). I haven't followed their careers, and never really found an appreciation of my own. Just something my sister liked a lot, and I love my sister, so I just sort of feigned a casual interest. Like I said, Louis only caught my notice, because he seems gay and ofc that flags to me. Almost nothing else about them is interesting to me, except one of Zayn's records which I liked a lot (the first solo one?) because he has a beautiful voice (shame about his personality, or lack thereof). I don't get why boy band members think they'll have major success outside of their group. It's very rare unless they are lucky. Their audience is mostly little girls who fantasize about them. Most adults aren't interested in manufactured boy bands, they find them corny and emasculated. Some exceptions like Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin, Robbie Williams and now Harry Styles, simply exist to fill a much needed niche role, often to be a Michael Jackson clone. But even those I listed are exceptions not the standard. Girl groups have a wider reach and more solo members have more success because adults embrace female pop stars more.

Millennial gay. One Direction stood out to me because there wasn't many boy bands that were popular in The US throughout the 2000s. It seemed after 2002, the most recent mainstream ones like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and B2K just faded away. They were looked at as embarrassing as tastes changed. There was stuff like the Jonas Brothers and Big Time Rush but that was more akin to The Monkees, for little kids with a TV show and they never were taken seriously.
One Direction though was mainstream and huge on social media. I never was into their music though it's not bad, it's mostly generic pop rock. They did harmonize very well and pleasant to the ears. I wasn't shocked Harry Styles was the breakout star given he seemed to be the face of the group on the cover of all the teen magazines and the most rumored love life. Basically had the "it factor" to market. Same with Bobby Brown and Justin Timberlake, there's that one that pops out and is hungry for fame. Datalounge was obsessed with Harry and Louis being gay which gave them some notice in gay internet culture.
They were nothing like NKOTB, NSYNC or BSB because those groups had a strong urban influence being white versions of black R&B groups with Michael/Janet inspired choreography. One Direction clearly took inspiration from 80s and 90s British pop rock.
They are Spice Boys. One of the million pop stars and groups the UK spits out every year that managed to break over into The US. Most Americans have never heard of 80% of the other UK pop acts like Girls Aloud or Robbie Williams. Great social media skills the 1D guys had too which is why they went viral. Same reason Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez got so huge compared to other teen pop stars who just disappeared from the spotlight. They utilized social media when it was still in it's growing stage, the mid to late 2000s. Social media immortalized so many pop acts that in previous decades just vanished.
