When is it gonna fucking be my turn?

by Anonymousreply 1June 6, 2023 12:51 PM

I guess we already know what was on her iPod.

by Anonymousreply 2June 6, 2023 12:53 PM

The Girl From Ipanema singer Astrud Gilberto has died at the age of 83. Gilberto's son Marcelo confirmed to The Independent that she died on 5 June. The cause of her death was not disclosed.

Composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese poet Vinicius de Moraes penned The Girl From Ipanema in 1962.

Awww. She was one of my favorites. Her music always calms me down.

The pic @ OP is one of the best I've seen of her.

Most the time she looked "not quite right" - sort of weird and lacking in confidence.

by Anonymousreply 6June 6, 2023 12:59 PM

My favourite song of hers is "Crickets Sing for Anamaria", which Emma Bunton covered

REALLY? We don't get the original from you on Astrud's big day - just some silly gay Emma Bunton cover?

For goodness sake!

[quote]LOVE HER!

Thank you, gurl. I love you too.

by Anonymousreply 10June 6, 2023 1:07 PM

Without Astrud we never would have had this classic

OMG, r11! How come I never heard that?

by Anonymousreply 12June 6, 2023 1:24 PM

r12, it's from an off-Broadway show based on Mad Magazine called The Mad Show. Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim using a pseudonym. The show was a bit of a cult hit but the lyrics and references are so specific to the era you couldn't revive it today

She was SO pretty back in the 1960’s.

by Anonymousreply 14June 6, 2023 1:41 PM

Love it, r13! Thanks for posting!

I always liked this tribute to Gilberto from Basia's debut album. I don't know any of Gilberto's music aside from The Girl From Ipanema and the Crickets song which I didn't know was a cover.

In an ironic twist, Gilberto wasn’t from Ipanema.

by Anonymousreply 17June 6, 2023 1:55 PM

Stan Getz was kinda cute.

I love it too. Great find!

I'd forgotten this one - it was my fave when I was into her records. Very 60s OMG.

She sounds so refreshing after all the copycat, overwrought singers “nailing” songs.

by Anonymousreply 25June 6, 2023 4:45 PM

Her music is from the time when people had class. They'd dress up to fly and drink elegant cocktails. No pj bottoms and plastic water bottles.

Bossa Nova is pure class.

by Anonymousreply 26June 6, 2023 5:18 PM

Chet is the poster child of, "Don't Do Drugs". He was so good looking.

by Anonymousreply 27June 6, 2023 5:27 PM

No one had her in the death poll.

by Anonymousreply 28June 6, 2023 6:45 PM

I’ve heard of the song but had no idea of the artists name until now.

by Anonymousreply 29June 6, 2023 6:49 PM

She was all tone.

Couldn't hit a note to save her life.

I wonder if that's what killed her.

by Anonymousreply 30June 6, 2023 7:01 PM

[quote]Couldn't hit a note to save her life.

Hi, Katy Perry!

by Anonymousreply 31June 6, 2023 7:05 PM

R30 - bullseye.

Yes, her songs were strangely dreary and flat.

Chris Montez did her kind of music better than she did - once you get over his strange voice.

[quote]And you are, [R30]?

what on earth does that mean - do YOU even know?

by Anonymousreply 34June 6, 2023 7:10 PM

Let's keep it real - she was a one hit wonder.

And see R35 - she had ZERO charisma as a live performer. She moves three steps over to sit down and you're holding your breath with her in case she stumbles or falls.

by Anonymousreply 36June 6, 2023 7:15 PM

She was the bossa nova Dietrich.

by Anonymousreply 37June 6, 2023 7:15 PM

[quote]what on earth does that mean - do YOU even know?

It means "who the fuck are you" to say this woman "Couldn't hit a note to save her life."?

Please don't answer, keep listening to Janet Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 38June 6, 2023 7:17 PM

Music today is pure trash, so when people listen to real music they are shocked.

He has a better musical ear than you have and he doesn't have to "be" someone to have an opinion - so try not to be so patronising (and aggressive) when addressing your musical and intellectual superiors.

Is that satire?

And it's patronizing, with a Z.

by Anonymousreply 41June 6, 2023 7:28 PM

I guess some people just prefer Beyonce.

by Anonymousreply 42June 6, 2023 7:29 PM

[quote]And it's patronizing, with a Z.

Not for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 43June 6, 2023 7:31 PM

I "discovered" her a couple of years ago. I thought her name was Asturd. Astrud is still unfortunate but at least not Ass turd.

by Anonymousreply 44June 6, 2023 7:52 PM

OMG I forgot all about Chris Montez.....I think I had that LP. He did a great job on the slow songs, but he could also rock out a good dance tune.

Man that's weird - somebody put that 1966 song to a clip from a 1957 Mamie Van Doren movie.

Kind of like the finale of There's No Business Like Show Business when the cast came out and did the title tune three years before it was written in the Hippodrome that was torn down ten years before.

God that's BAD @ R48. Shit!

by Anonymousreply 50June 7, 2023 3:48 AM

Was Linda Lavin cast in The Mad Show to do that Astrud parody because she had the same problem singing flat and sharp all over the place? (A "quality" of her singing oft-discussed on DL)
