Real-life All About Eve on SOLID GOLD
Daniel Martin
At 3:00, Andy Gibb introduces Rex Smith, who hops onstage in tight leather pants before the two launch into a number from Pirates of Penzance. Andy’s side is clearly fueled by cocaine, Rex Smith’s by savage ambition.
A year later Andy Gibb was out and Rex was in as Marilyn McCoo’s co-host.
A story as old as time.

And to those who may say Solid Gold was an irrelevant, old-fashioned program built around corporate recording contracts, look who Dionne Warwick and Barry White introduce at 7:20, none other than perennial hitmaker at the dawn of her storied career, DL legend Terri Gibbs.

I LOATHED Rex Smith. The arrogance just dripped off of him. Oversinger extraordinaire.

[quote]The arrogance just dripped off of him
Due, no doubt, to what was bulging out of his pants.

I loved him back in the day.

Rex in the coveted cohost role, singing a medley of 1982 Grammy-nominated songs.
The Donald Fagen cover is surpringly charming.
Eye of the Tiger and Ebony and Ivory are just awful songs beyond repair.
Toto’s Rosanna won.

KAREN: (stunned) "To co-host a top-of-the-pops digest television show with Marilyn McCoo... you'd do all that, just to co-host a top-of-the-pops digest television show with Marilyn McCoo..."
EVE: "To co-host for a top-of-the-pops digest television show with Marilyn McCoo THAT good, I'd do much more than that..."

Marilyn was (is) beautiful.

I think I saw Rex Smith in a Broadway production of Grease when I was a kid or am I misremembering that?

Datalounge dream cast for Grease.

Andy was talented, sexy as hell and a hot mess.
He had no one to blame but himself.

Marilyn McCoo is a jazzy name!

Oddly, that song isn't from Pirates of Penzance. It's from Ruddigore, but for some reason they took it and put it into the film version of Pirates. Never knew why,

Sorry, r11, if Joanne Whorley ain't in Grease, or anything for that matter, we will not approve!
Caftans, unite!

Marilyn is looking a little animated and glassy eyed in these clips as well.

Why did Solid Gold decline in popularity in the late 80s? Many good videos here.

R28 yes but he got real ugly there
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 5, 2022 6:38 PM |
As a small child, Solid Gold was my fave TV show. It came on every Saturday evening.

Rex Smith is hot in some pics but his face is so pointy.
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 5, 2022 7:12 PM |
He's a prime example of exceedingly tacky and very hot.

Didn't realise the Gibbs were so posh.
OT but 'Young Turks' is Rod's best and most underrated Top 10 single imo. Probably blasphemous to you elders, but I got to know it via the videogame GTA: San Andreas.

Whet Rex Smith?
Are there nudes out there?
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 5, 2022 8:07 PM |
Solid Gold was must-see TV no matter who hosted.

Gibb did the LA version of Pirates of Penzance with Pam Dawber. Gibb was fired from solid gold for missing too many tapings, sometimes canceling at the last minute. The same thing happened later that year when he did Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat on Broadway.

Pam Dawber. There’s a name you don’t hear much anymore.

Rex Smith looked and sounded coked-up as well.
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 6, 2022 3:45 AM |
R48 and R48, Irene was blackballed after she sued her record company for royalties. She won, but she was persona non grata after that.
