Randolph Scott

Writer Ava Lawson

After Cary, do you think Randolph had any other long term relationships or hookups with men? Or was he basically celibate from then on?

I always thought Dyan Cannon was a beard. She was cute in a Cupie Doll/Sandra Dee kinda way. But hardly the glamazon you'd think a matinee idol would end-up with.

r1 They look like twins so of course those narcissists couldn't resist each other.

by Anonymousreply 3April 8, 2018 6:42 PM

OP R3 R4, could you link to the tumblr post where those gifs are, not just the images?

I love that old movie, but forgot the info. It's basically a threeway with a sad ending when Cary gets married to the girl, leaving randy Randolph.

by Anonymousreply 4April 8, 2018 6:47 PM

I read somewhere that the only thing that kept Randolph going after Cary broke things off, was an affair with Fred Astair

by Anonymousreply 6April 8, 2018 6:52 PM

r4 I can't find the tumblr page for those gifs but the film is HOT SATURDAY from 1932.

I do wonder if Scott spent his life broken hearted that he couldn't have a relationship with Grant. Grant seems too much of a narcissist to really have loved anybody.

Even though Scott was nowhere near as good as Grant there is a warmth that comes through in his performances. Grant pretty much admitted that his whole life he was playing a character called Cary Grant.

by Anonymousreply 11April 8, 2018 7:16 PM

I read on here once that he met up with Grant in later life. I vaguely remember a scene in a darkened corner of a deserted restaurant, Cary and Randolph surreptitiously holding hands under the table and talking for hours, eventually Grant leaves and Randolph can be heard sobbing uncontrollably. That sort of thing?

by Anonymousreply 12April 8, 2018 9:13 PM

I envision a repeat of that scenario in a couple years with Trump and Putin, r12.

by Anonymousreply 13April 8, 2018 9:34 PM

I love the westerns Scott did with Budd Boeticher, but I find his gayface really distracting whenever he's trying to be prominently butch.

by Anonymousreply 14April 8, 2018 9:37 PM

"Mr Blackwell, the notorious fashion critic, lived with Cary and Randolph for several months. In his memoir he said that he considered them, “deeply, madly in love, their devotion complete…Behind closed doors they were warm, kind, loving and caring, and unembarrassed about showing it.”

[quote]Behind closed doors they were warm, kind, loving and caring, and unembarrassed about showing it.”

I hope that's true. I do sometimes wonder what their relationship was like, because I think Cary Grant was quite cruel to his earlier partner Orry-Kelly, later mocking him for being a "queen" and so on.

by Anonymousreply 17April 8, 2018 11:21 PM

They look nothing alike. Scott is taller, more wasp-y, more fair.

They are both stunners in completely different ways. People are so bitter, R3.

by Anonymousreply 19April 11, 2018 8:50 PM

We need a bio-pic of their relationship.

by Anonymousreply 20April 11, 2018 8:50 PM

Scott was too skinny. I don't like a skinny bottom

by Anonymousreply 21April 11, 2018 8:50 PM

Their story would make a great movie

by Anonymousreply 22April 11, 2018 8:56 PM

Cary was the most beautiful man who ever hit Hollywood. Tyrone Power was a close second ( behold the gorgeousness of him and henry Fonda together in jesse james). Gary Cooper in his youth was drop dead gorgeous. Even young John Wayne was splendid. I much prefer the stars of the thirties. They had CLASS. And their leading ladies..leigh, hepburn, davis, Sidney, o'sullivan, bergman, garbo, dietrich....wow

[quote]eventually Grant leaves and Randolph can be heard sobbing uncontrollably.

That last bit sounds like something that a nellie waiter would add to the story.

"Gurl, I *could* *not* get him to leave. We were so busy that night and we needed that table. But he jus sat there sobbing. Uncontrollably!! Personally, if it had been me, I would have slapped that bitch Cary Grant and *read* *him* *for* *filth.* Always putting on those upper class British airs. Everybody knows Miss Archibald Leach's father was a factory worker. More tartar sauce, ma'am? Thanks for dining at the Golden Corral.

by Anonymousreply 24April 11, 2018 8:58 PM

So Cary left him for poon, or what?

by Anonymousreply 25April 11, 2018 8:58 PM

Cary later went on several dates with a young Dick Sargent—the second Darrin on Bewitched—according to Sargent himself who admitted that they never slept together.

by Anonymousreply 26April 11, 2018 9:00 PM

R11 Cary Grant really became a star and started exhibiting the Grant persona we know and love in the film "The Awful Truth" in 1937. Apparently Grant modeled his performance on director Gregory LaCava's real-life mannerisms and aura. If you see films before that, like the ones he did with Mae West, he was very handsome but didn't yet have the sparkle and je ne sais quoi that he "got" when he did the "Awful Truth" and continued to have in reel and real life from thence forward.

by Anonymousreply 27April 11, 2018 9:02 PM

HOW DARE YOU R24 ! Even I know that on DL we READ *TO* FILTH, and we ask *WHET* ? So-and-so

by Anonymousreply 28April 11, 2018 9:03 PM

Many years ago I saw a picture of Cary in his jockey shorts from the side, and you could see the outline of everything. Unfortunately, it was nothing to write home about. (He's my favorite movie actor).

by Anonymousreply 30April 11, 2018 9:09 PM

From what I’ve heard Cary was an actor on and off set. He was from a very poor ‘gypsy’ background back in the uk and put on upper class airs to keep up appearances. Scott was from old money and independently rich so did no such thing and it drove a wedge between them.

The pics of them together show incredible chemistry in any case.

Randolph Scott was born Randolph Crane and went to Georgia Tech. He was briefly married to Marian DuPont, hence the money to buy his way into Hollywood. Darwin Porter said he was Howard Hughes' boy toy. He was the first actor let in the Los Angeles Country Club - he had to foreswear acting to do it.

by Anonymousreply 40April 11, 2018 10:21 PM

Randolph Scott, if he were alive today, would be declared a Deplorable by the men of Data Lounge. He was a KA at Georgia Tech, which means he was a total racist, and he was very religious and Rev Billy Graham was one of his closest friends.

by Anonymousreply 41April 11, 2018 10:25 PM

"Randolph Scott, if he were alive today, would be declared a Deplorable by the men of Data Lounge. He was a KA at Georgia Tech, which means he was a total racist, and he was very religious and Rev Billy Graham was one of his closest friends."

God, you're stupid. Who are you to declare Randolph Scott "a total racist?" And he was "very religious" and friends with Billy Graham? Why, he must have been evil incarnate! It bears repeating; God, you're stupid.

Zero proof they were gay....zero proof they were a couple. All the evidence people bring forth to show they were, are things that many people did back then....sharing beds, etc. My elderly family members had a discussion about the reasons people thought they were gay and they laughed, saying how common all those things were. Drives me nuts, speculate...fine....announce that they are...ridiculous.

Years ago, I was friends with an old queen who always told me great gossip. He was close friends with James Coco and "Jimmy" told him the story of touring with Constance Bennett in the early 60's. They became great friends and one night "Connie" turned to Jimmy and said, "Do you want to know what the biggest secret in Hollywood is?" Coco nodded, with bated breath. "Cary Grant and Randolph Scott!" Jimmy laughed. "Secret?!? Oh, honey, EVERYBODY knows about that!"

by Anonymousreply 47April 11, 2018 10:57 PM

R42 My post was meant to be facetious. I am so sick of hearing how everyone who is from the south and participates in southern heritage is a slavery loving traitor to the Union. And unless you just awoke from hibernation, you surely read the horrible posts which followed the death of Billy Graham. including angry criticism for Barack Obama for merely making a kind tweet concerning his passing.

by Anonymousreply 48April 11, 2018 11:21 PM

R48, wait until you master straightforward before you try facetious.

by Anonymousreply 49April 12, 2018 6:37 AM

R49 I really don't get your push back. At this moment there is a thread about actors/celebs who you are boycotting because of the actions and beliefs. My point was, IF RS were alive today, he would be a Deplorable. Do you dispute that?

by Anonymousreply 50April 12, 2018 6:48 AM

I'm not R49, R50, but I think you may be a little tone-deaf to the spirit of this thread. If his antique political leanings are relevant to you now, you could start a thread about it.

Dick Sargent has a scene with Cary Grant in that Touch of Mink where he plays I think a nervous husband.

by Anonymousreply 65April 12, 2018 8:00 PM

r65 Pretty sure Cary was the top. Randolph and Cary's previous partner, Orry-Kelly both seemed like nelly bottoms.

by Anonymousreply 66April 12, 2018 8:02 PM

Randolph's son said he couldn't have been gay because he was examined at a hospital and they would have known. LOL.

by Anonymousreply 69April 12, 2018 9:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 76April 12, 2018 10:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 78April 16, 2018 10:24 PM

[quote]Around 1927, Scott developed an interest in acting and decided to make his way to Los Angeles and seek a career in the motion picture industry. Fortunately, Scott's father had become acquainted with Howard Hughes and provided a letter of introduction for his son to present to the eccentric millionaire filmmaker.[9] Hughes responded by getting Scott a small part in a George O'Brien film called Sharp Shooters (1928)

So the bisexual Hughes got him a part in a film with the gay O'Brien? Hollywood must have been such fun in those days.

[quote]is this simply a speculation based on certain aspects of his life that don't comport with the typical straight?

by Anonymousreply 85April 17, 2018 6:28 PM

George O'Brian was fucking Spencer Tracy.

Who told you this? Janet Gaynor or Katherine Hepburn?

by Anonymousreply 86April 17, 2018 6:33 PM

George O'Brien was basically the Chris Evans of his day.

by Anonymousreply 88April 17, 2018 6:38 PM

I still think George O'Brien is the actor John Ford was kissing that Maureen o'hara wrote about.

by Anonymousreply 89April 17, 2018 6:52 PM

I still can't figure out why O'Hara of all people would out John Ford and not the famous actor. Maybe it was somebody like Tyrone Power and his family would go ballistic?

Let's face it George O'Brian was pretty much forgotten and could at that point hardly be called famous.

by Anonymousreply 90April 17, 2018 6:56 PM

I've always heard the actor with Ford was John Wayne.

QUESTION.... so i research these guys, like what happens to them. the tarzans...... (one of them ended up working security in vegas and then dying at a FANS house in baltimore. YUC..... what a depressing ending to what was once a glamorous life. so, george o brien died in broken arrow ?? WTF? how on earth did he end up there? cary grant died at a speaking engagement. sounds like he had a comfortable life Randolph scott same thing , here in beverly hills. i remember in aprox 2005 or 2006 i stopped at open house on copely drive, it was his house. his last wife had died and i stepped inside, (old buick station wagon out front). the realtor said the owners lived in palm springs. i knew it was randolph scotts house. it was like a bunker. concrete. i guess it cost like $400,000 in 1950s? to build, which is unheard of. anyway. it was torn down. it was right on the golf course of los ang country club. so his life ended nicely. but not so for others, i know how data lounge feels about how other old homo lives end, and darwin porter "facts" but i have read his books and most live from age 55yrs to 80s ... not very happy lives. troy donahue, rock hudson, dick dubois............tab hunter married some rich dude with a ranch so he ended up ok, but not the others mentioned in porters books
