Randolph Scott
Ava Lawson
After Cary, do you think Randolph had any other long term relationships or hookups with men? Or was he basically celibate from then on?

I always thought Dyan Cannon was a beard. She was cute in a Cupie Doll/Sandra Dee kinda way. But hardly the glamazon you'd think a matinee idol would end-up with.

I love that old movie, but forgot the info. It's basically a threeway with a sad ending when Cary gets married to the girl, leaving randy Randolph.

I read somewhere that the only thing that kept Randolph going after Cary broke things off, was an affair with Fred Astair

I do wonder if Scott spent his life broken hearted that he couldn't have a relationship with Grant. Grant seems too much of a narcissist to really have loved anybody.
Even though Scott was nowhere near as good as Grant there is a warmth that comes through in his performances. Grant pretty much admitted that his whole life he was playing a character called Cary Grant.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 8, 2018 7:16 PM |
I read on here once that he met up with Grant in later life. I vaguely remember a scene in a darkened corner of a deserted restaurant, Cary and Randolph surreptitiously holding hands under the table and talking for hours, eventually Grant leaves and Randolph can be heard sobbing uncontrollably. That sort of thing?
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 8, 2018 9:13 PM |
I envision a repeat of that scenario in a couple years with Trump and Putin, r12.

I love the westerns Scott did with Budd Boeticher, but I find his gayface really distracting whenever he's trying to be prominently butch.

"Mr Blackwell, the notorious fashion critic, lived with Cary and Randolph for several months. In his memoir he said that he considered them, “deeply, madly in love, their devotion complete…Behind closed doors they were warm, kind, loving and caring, and unembarrassed about showing it.”

I hope that's true. I do sometimes wonder what their relationship was like, because I think Cary Grant was quite cruel to his earlier partner Orry-Kelly, later mocking him for being a "queen" and so on.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 8, 2018 11:21 PM |

They are both stunners in completely different ways. People are so bitter, R3.

Cary was the most beautiful man who ever hit Hollywood. Tyrone Power was a close second ( behold the gorgeousness of him and henry Fonda together in jesse james). Gary Cooper in his youth was drop dead gorgeous. Even young John Wayne was splendid. I much prefer the stars of the thirties. They had CLASS. And their leading ladies..leigh, hepburn, davis, Sidney, o'sullivan, bergman, garbo, dietrich....wow

That last bit sounds like something that a nellie waiter would add to the story.
"Gurl, I *could* *not* get him to leave. We were so busy that night and we needed that table. But he jus sat there sobbing. Uncontrollably!! Personally, if it had been me, I would have slapped that bitch Cary Grant and *read* *him* *for* *filth.* Always putting on those upper class British airs. Everybody knows Miss Archibald Leach's father was a factory worker. More tartar sauce, ma'am? Thanks for dining at the Golden Corral.

Cary later went on several dates with a young Dick Sargent—the second Darrin on Bewitched—according to Sargent himself who admitted that they never slept together.

R11 Cary Grant really became a star and started exhibiting the Grant persona we know and love in the film "The Awful Truth" in 1937. Apparently Grant modeled his performance on director Gregory LaCava's real-life mannerisms and aura. If you see films before that, like the ones he did with Mae West, he was very handsome but didn't yet have the sparkle and je ne sais quoi that he "got" when he did the "Awful Truth" and continued to have in reel and real life from thence forward.

From what I’ve heard Cary was an actor on and off set. He was from a very poor ‘gypsy’ background back in the uk and put on upper class airs to keep up appearances. Scott was from old money and independently rich so did no such thing and it drove a wedge between them.
The pics of them together show incredible chemistry in any case.

Randolph Scott was born Randolph Crane and went to Georgia Tech. He was briefly married to Marian DuPont, hence the money to buy his way into Hollywood. Darwin Porter said he was Howard Hughes' boy toy. He was the first actor let in the Los Angeles Country Club - he had to foreswear acting to do it.

Randolph Scott, if he were alive today, would be declared a Deplorable by the men of Data Lounge. He was a KA at Georgia Tech, which means he was a total racist, and he was very religious and Rev Billy Graham was one of his closest friends.

Zero proof they were gay....zero proof they were a couple. All the evidence people bring forth to show they were, are things that many people did back then....sharing beds, etc. My elderly family members had a discussion about the reasons people thought they were gay and they laughed, saying how common all those things were. Drives me nuts, speculate...fine....announce that they are...ridiculous.

Years ago, I was friends with an old queen who always told me great gossip. He was close friends with James Coco and "Jimmy" told him the story of touring with Constance Bennett in the early 60's. They became great friends and one night "Connie" turned to Jimmy and said, "Do you want to know what the biggest secret in Hollywood is?" Coco nodded, with bated breath. "Cary Grant and Randolph Scott!" Jimmy laughed. "Secret?!? Oh, honey, EVERYBODY knows about that!"

[quote]Around 1927, Scott developed an interest in acting and decided to make his way to Los Angeles and seek a career in the motion picture industry. Fortunately, Scott's father had become acquainted with Howard Hughes and provided a letter of introduction for his son to present to the eccentric millionaire filmmaker.[9] Hughes responded by getting Scott a small part in a George O'Brien film called Sharp Shooters (1928)
So the bisexual Hughes got him a part in a film with the gay O'Brien? Hollywood must have been such fun in those days.

WTF? how on earth did he end up there? cary grant died at a speaking engagement. sounds like he had a comfortable life Randolph scott same thing , here in beverly hills. i remember in aprox 2005 or 2006 i stopped at open house on copely drive, it was his house. his last wife had died and i stepped inside, (old buick station wagon out front). the realtor said the owners lived in palm springs. i knew it was randolph scotts house. it was like a bunker. concrete. i guess it cost like $400,000 in 1950s? to build, which is unheard of. anyway. it was torn down. it was right on the golf course of los ang country club. so his life ended nicely. but not so for others, i know how data lounge feels about how other old homo lives end, and darwin porter "facts" but i have read his books and most live from age 55yrs to 80s ... not very happy lives. troy donahue, rock hudson, dick dubois............tab hunter married some rich dude with a ranch so he ended up ok, but not the others mentioned in porters books
