One positive thing to come from COVID.

by Anonymousreply 1January 17, 2021 4:08 PM

Mother told me never to speak ill of the dead, only good.

Phil Specter is dead. Good.

by Anonymousreply 2January 17, 2021 4:19 PM

Rest in hell, ya old freak.

by Anonymousreply 3January 17, 2021 4:22 PM

So many of these murderers are dying lately.

by Anonymousreply 4January 17, 2021 4:27 PM

My full sympathies to COVID-19.

by Anonymousreply 5January 17, 2021 4:35 PM

His "Wall of Sound" was amazing. It's the only good thing I can say about him.

by Anonymousreply 6January 17, 2021 4:36 PM

God, that took long enough.

by Anonymousreply 8January 17, 2021 4:37 PM

R6 any specific examples?

by Anonymousreply 10January 17, 2021 4:40 PM

R10: Tina Turner "River Deep, Mountain High"

by Anonymousreply 11January 17, 2021 4:43 PM

R10, go to the TMZ. There are several examples there with links to YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 12January 17, 2021 4:47 PM

He was a terrible person, but River Deep, Mountain High is still incredible to this day. It sounds of its time, but is still amazing.

by Anonymousreply 13January 17, 2021 4:50 PM

[quote]God, that took long enough.

I've been busy.

by Anonymousreply 14January 17, 2021 4:54 PM

Responsible for a lot of great tunes, many of them hits.

by Anonymousreply 16January 17, 2021 5:06 PM

It’s a shame that his technical achievements will always be overshadowed by murder, because he really was a genius.

by Anonymousreply 17January 17, 2021 5:06 PM

Yeah, I'm sure Lana Clarkson's family feels bad that Spector's musical talents aren't getting the recognition they deserve.

by Anonymousreply 18January 17, 2021 5:12 PM

Surprised he got convicted and spent so much time in prison. Rich, famous, and powerful people like him seem to get a different form of justice.

by Anonymousreply 22January 17, 2021 5:32 PM

Was he always nuts or did it happen gradually?

by Anonymousreply 23January 17, 2021 5:33 PM

Did he shoot that actress on purpose? I didn't really pay much attention to the trial.

by Anonymousreply 24January 17, 2021 5:35 PM

Always nuts. He had always been threatening people with guns, apropos of nothing.

by Anonymousreply 26January 17, 2021 5:36 PM

If he'd been born 40 years later, he could've become a Republican Congressman.

by Anonymousreply 27January 17, 2021 5:39 PM

R23 Ronnie Spector has told some pretty harrowing stories about his physical abuse and madness.

by Anonymousreply 28January 17, 2021 5:40 PM

Ronnie Spector said he did various bizarre things during their marriage, such as hiding her shoes so she couldn't leave the house, and turning all the lights off to hide his balding head. He kept a golden coffin with a glass door in the basement and told her that's where she would end up if she ever left him. He was absurdly talented but a complete psycho.

by Anonymousreply 29January 17, 2021 5:46 PM

R29: I think Ronnie Spector said she escaped the mansion barefoot with her mother driving the getaway car. And Spector adopted two children for Ronnie to raise. Not telling her anything about it.

by Anonymousreply 30January 17, 2021 5:56 PM

I outlived another abusive POS!

by Anonymousreply 31January 17, 2021 6:02 PM

He was a wonderful record producer.

Socially unacceptable though.

by Anonymousreply 32January 17, 2021 6:06 PM

The most "Wall of Sound" sounding song on All Things Must Pass.

R27 - what about Lillian Gish?

by Anonymousreply 35January 17, 2021 6:23 PM

Heaven has a new homicidal musical angel.

by Anonymousreply 36January 17, 2021 6:25 PM

He was a freak but I love a lot of the Brill building stuff. Da Do Ron Ron, And Then He Kissed Me....

by Anonymousreply 39January 17, 2021 6:28 PM

[quote] So many of these murderers are dying lately.

Heh heh victory lap too much?

by Anonymousreply 40January 17, 2021 6:32 PM

[R36] The last place where he’d be is heaven.

by Anonymousreply 41January 17, 2021 7:35 PM

Loved the songs mentioned as well as To Know Him Is To Love Him, Spanish Harlem, Corrine Corrine and Unchained Melody.

But he was an ugly man both inside and out.

by Anonymousreply 42January 17, 2021 7:44 PM

So why is it called Wall of Sound?

by Anonymousreply 45January 17, 2021 8:49 PM

He was nuts since birth. Every rock autobiography where the writer crossed paths with him is a crazy usually violent story. He absolutely hated women. He attached himself to Lenny Bruce who hated, but used him. He knew he was nuts too. I hope those last weeks were a scary struggle for him

by Anonymousreply 46January 17, 2021 8:58 PM

I for one never liked his bombastic, overblown production techniques. I was never a fan of his.

by Anonymousreply 47January 17, 2021 9:08 PM

R45 Recording different music and vocal elements separately, then mixing and layering them together in a single track.

by Anonymousreply 48January 17, 2021 9:15 PM

"Some of the best sitcoms are based around having roommates (e.g. Three's Company, Golden Girls, Friends)."

Of course you realize that sitcoms are fiction, right? They don't depict reality. Having roommates is not cute and funny and nice; it's usually a big pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 49January 17, 2021 9:20 PM

Can you buy a posthumous pardon?

by Anonymousreply 50January 17, 2021 9:21 PM

Thanks for your thoughts, r49.

by Anonymousreply 51January 17, 2021 9:30 PM

R46 is right. There was a chapter in the Leonard Cohen biography " I'm Your Man" and this guy was a fucking lunatic. A complete psychopath. He pulled a gun on someone during a recording session. Fucking creep.

by Anonymousreply 52January 17, 2021 9:59 PM

Oops. R49 is supposed to be the the roommates thread. Don't know how it ended up here.

by Anonymousreply 54January 17, 2021 10:10 PM

Cause you’re cute, r54.

by Anonymousreply 55January 17, 2021 10:14 PM

Now Phil is really a specter.

But darn he made some fine music.

He had a meeting with Linda Ronstadt in the seventies I think. I'm not sure why; were they considering working together? It was written up in the Rolling Stone. I can't remember anything about it except that it went very badly and that Ronstadt, disgusted with his typical insane behavior, told him to "go back to the zoo." I don't know why she would have agreed to meet him in the first place; didn't she knw anything about him at all? Maybe she thought if they did a music collaboration she would have a big hit record and that was her motivation. Anyway, it would have been a bizarre pairing; Linda Ronstadt and Phil Spector. Wrong on so many levels.

by Anonymousreply 57January 18, 2021 3:44 AM

[quote] told him to "go back to the zoo."

Did he buy it?

by Anonymousreply 58January 18, 2021 3:48 AM

He pulled a gun on the Ramones and John Lennon

by Anonymousreply 60January 18, 2021 6:08 AM

Can you imagine if he'd ever done a record with Kanye West? That would have been a match made in lunatic asylum heaven.

by Anonymousreply 61January 18, 2021 6:56 AM

His wall was sound, but his mind sure wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 62January 18, 2021 7:28 AM

Was a fucking crazy nut, but had talent. Don't know of many that can produce hit after hit after hit. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 63January 18, 2021 9:55 AM

Yep. You can be gifted and still be a horrible human being. That just seems so twisted but there are probably more accomplished, successful people (sometimes you've got to be nasty to get to the top) than there are ones that are kind and empathetic. But they do exist! Be grateful for the ones we have.

by Anonymousreply 64January 18, 2021 10:37 AM

I’m getting a strong Linda Richman vibe.

There would’ve been a shootout right there in the studio á la Police Squad!

by Anonymousreply 66January 18, 2021 11:30 AM

A lot of famous, successful people are truly horrible human beings, but Spector was really an extreme case. He should have been involuntarily committed to a mental hospital. He should have been in prison long before he was convicted of murder.

by Anonymousreply 67January 18, 2021 8:55 PM

What Spector rarities are you hoping to see freed from the vault?

by Anonymousreply 68January 20, 2021 8:06 PM

Notice that Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) said nothing to do with PS's death -- it's obvious that he knew that Phil was bad publicity after the Lana Clarkson murder, even if he said (at one time) that Phil Spector's music was his religion.
