Pepsi & Shirlie
Andrew Hansen
With the renewed interest in Wham, is it time for the Pepsi & Shirlie revival to begin in earnest? With their evergreen classic, Heartache, and the various follow-up hits, Pepsi & Shirlie were a most welcome addition to the late-80s scene. Yet they disbanded before their full artistic potential had been realised. Surely now is the time for a whole new generation to discover the joyous sound of Pepsi & Shirlie, the Wham backing vocalist divas who briefly conquered the world.

OP, we watched the docu. which wasn’t very good but we were fascinated with Pepsi and Shirl and wonder what became of them.

'Twas Laverne who liked Pepsi (with milk).

'the Wham backing vocalist divas who briefly conquered the world'
They are completely unknown outside the UK.

I remember their names, but I don’t remember that generic song at all.

After revolutionising the charts with Heartache, they did it all over again with yet another new enduring classic, Goodbye Stranger.

Alas. Pepsi & Shirlie then encountered a classic case of third-single slump even though I think we can all agree that the single in question, the innovative Can’t Give Me Love, should have propelled them to No 1. At around this time, they issued the groundbreaking album All Right Now

Undaunted by the relative failure of their third single, P&S came back with a stunning and wholly unforgettable cover of Free’s All Right Now, which made U.K. No 50.

I preferred "Magic Carpet Ride" by Bardeux from 1987.

The background in this 1987 song sounds like knocked-up anthems Billie Jean ‘83 and Papa Don’t Preach ‘86.
Were they ripping each other off or was their one electronic tempo/beat?

It was going to take more than two flop singles in a row to finish off Pepsi & Shirlie and they rebounded in 1988 with Hightime, performing it live at Montreux Rock Festival. Shirlie sometimes had pitch issues, landing sharp on some of the notes, but nevertheless they brought the house down with an iconic display that has been a talking point among the Swiss ever since.

You're thinking of Mel Appelby of Mel & Kim, whose life, which could make one great bop-filled weeper of a biopic, was snuffed out by spinal cancer at 23.
