Writer Ava Lawson

Holy shit!

I hope there weren't a lot of people in it.

That's pretty scary. What mess too. Could you imagine if it's the end of your workday and you think you're just going to jump into your car and drive home, only to see that ?

by Anonymousreply 1April 18, 2023 10:11 PM

Doesn't look nearly as catastrophic as it could have been. But yeah, ick.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2023 10:17 PM

"downtown New York City" ??? they seem to mean lower Manhattan

by Anonymousreply 3April 18, 2023 10:23 PM

One guy interviewed by the news said that he still had to pay $27.00 to get his car out. It could be destroyed, but pay the parking fee. Under the circumstances, it couldn't be waived?

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2023 10:29 PM

The Wall Street Club is (or was) just up the block. Hope those whores are ok!

by Anonymousreply 5April 18, 2023 10:30 PM

They let people go in there already to get their cars? !!!!!! Yikes

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2023 10:31 PM

[quote]One guy interviewed by the news said that he still had to pay $27.00 to get his car out. It could be destroyed, but pay the parking fee. Under the circumstances, it couldn't be waived?

Hey! Was the damn thing parked? It's after 5:00 at night now. Your car was sitting here all day. You're damn right you're gonna pay.

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2023 10:33 PM

Any kind of building collapse is frightening to me, even worse to be trapped, immobile and still conscious.

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2023 10:35 PM

You wonder how diligent building inspections are...do they take shortcuts to just get it done and over with, and sign off the papers?

by Anonymousreply 9April 18, 2023 10:39 PM

Near Pace? I used to go down there to an electronics store decades ago. It was J&R. Largely destroyed by 9/11.

A million subway lines into lower Manhattan, what is the demographic of people who insist on driving and parking their car.

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2023 10:57 PM

The mechanical dog, going into the rubble, is very cool.

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2023 11:02 PM

Thanks for the update R10.

by Anonymousreply 13April 18, 2023 11:13 PM

R9- They found vertical cracks in the concrete in a 2003 inspection, apparently. I do know you can put off at least one building inspector in NYC if you show "proof" of a "plan" to address issues.

by Anonymousreply 14April 18, 2023 11:13 PM

Everyone bow down before your new leader, the Bear King.

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2023 12:03 AM

Shithole city strikes again.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2023 12:03 AM

I wonder if 9/11 undermined the building.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2023 12:08 AM

J AND R. Was not destroyed but 9/11… where do you people come up with your bullshit. Their buildings were demolished by choice, sold and redeveloped.

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2023 12:35 AM

The Wiki article says it was destroyed. I think it meant in a business sense, R19. Read the article!

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2023 12:44 AM

I walked right past all the police cars and firetrucks earlier not realizing what had happened. This could have been so much worse. This part of the Financial District is super dense with lots of car and foot traffic, narrow streets, and rows of adjacent buildings.

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2023 12:45 AM

Why would I rely on Wiki, for news of my own neighborhood retailer? Read the room, not Wiki, dolt.

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2023 12:46 AM

R20. It was real estate profit taking, not 9/11 losses. Don’t be stupid.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2023 12:49 AM

I’m really paranoid about structural collapses and failures, that’s so scary!

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2023 12:49 AM

J&R closed in 2014…if anything the 2008-2012 recession killed it and not some that happened 13 years prior.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2023 12:49 AM

But the owners seemed so nice, J&R had a great and sentimental back story!

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2023 12:51 AM

Dumbasses who don't live in NYC cannot even read or research things apparently.

Yes, J&R closed their Tribeca location, but it was years after 9/11/01 and had nothing to do with that event.

Yes, property was redeveloped, but again that had nothing to do with 9/11/01.

J&R like a too long list of electronics/record stores were done in by rise of internet including online shopping.

For those who don't live in NYC and don't understand real estate here Tribeca is one of the hottest areas city atm. One Park Row became what has happened to many once commercial buildings in lower Manhattan/FiDi area, either converted to luxury housing or buildings torn down and same built.

Founding family of J&R Music World likely made out like bandits. They owned those properties for decades which means cost of acquiring land wouldn't have been anywhere near if developers had to pay market rate.

It's a metaphor for a city that is collapsing. Even $100M can't guarantee a safe place.

R26, I loved J&R back in the day.

R9, building inspectors are notorious for being willing to see things your way, for the right price.

by Anonymousreply 33April 19, 2023 1:14 AM

15 Park Row - the "Park Row Building" - once the tallest the in the world and for a number of years.

Is this going to be another thread about how NY is so terrible ...it keeps leading to people paying more and more money in order to live there.

by Anonymousreply 35April 19, 2023 1:36 AM

I remember back in the day when the newsies were selling papes on Park Row.

At a million bucks a stall this is like that Florida Condo collapse.

by Anonymousreply 37April 19, 2023 1:41 AM

The New York City Fire Department said that the deceased victim was believed to have been an employee at the parking garage.

Four people have been taken to the hospital, while the fifth injured person refused medical treatment.

Police said that six workers who were inside the five-floor garage when the structure caved in have been accounted for.

The structure, however, has been deemed unstable.

Neighboring buildings have also been compromised, according to reports.

The garage opened its gates to drivers in 1925, according to WABC.

by Anonymousreply 38April 19, 2023 1:45 AM

What R37 said.

And you NYC types have the nerve to point your fingers at FL?!?

Physician, heal thyself!

by Anonymousreply 39April 19, 2023 1:50 AM

There used to be a video floating around of a man in a parking garage entering the stairwell and the entire garage falling down around him, leaving just the stairwell. Lucky guy - but makes me think it happens more often than you'd think!

The US is going to see a rapid increase of crumbling infrastructure.

by Anonymousreply 41April 19, 2023 2:09 AM

Is it Seinfeld’s? He owns one next to his building, I understand.

by Anonymousreply 42April 19, 2023 2:13 AM

I thought this only happened in developing countries. Scary.

by Anonymousreply 43April 19, 2023 2:17 AM

The Manhattan Parking Garage is an insatiable bottom and has just prolapsed hole!

by Anonymousreply 44April 19, 2023 2:44 AM

I'm thinking of that condo in Miami that collapsed. At that time, people were blaming the corrupt inspectors in Florida, but I'm guessing that salt air and concrete don't mix any better in NYC than in Miami.

by Anonymousreply 45April 19, 2023 3:16 AM

It’s been a parking garage since 1925? Talk about an insatiable bottom. No wonder it’s exhausted.

by Anonymousreply 46April 19, 2023 6:01 AM

How did the shaftway fair?

by Anonymousreply 47April 19, 2023 6:39 AM

Car owners often leave unmentionables and valuables in their vehicles during the day. It could be a gym bag, bath house gear, company laptop or special friend’s luggage.

Will owners ever have access to them again?

Will the cars be removed somehow or are they all a total loss?

Will lives be changed because replacing the car costs too much?

Who parked in the garage for a illicit hookup only to have this happen?

The stories of what people left in their cars (salaciousness or innocent) and how doing so impacted their lives would make an excellent ABC Monday Night Movie produced by Aaron Spelling and Douglas Cramer.

by Anonymousreply 49April 19, 2023 8:35 AM

The ground is sand there. No bedrock. The former tallest building in the world is built on a foundation of wooden logs. Like in Venice, Italy.

I have fond memories of dating a guy who went to Pace. I remember walking down Spruce street to go see him there. He lived on campus. Oh the fun times we had there!

by Anonymousreply 52April 19, 2023 10:46 AM

building code and REGULATION. See, this is why we need this.

by Anonymousreply 53April 20, 2023 12:38 AM

You arm chair quarterbacks who mostly don't live in NYC can stand down; FDNY has said what they believe may have caused roof to collapse; too many large vehicles parked on said roof.

Of course it's early days yet so nothing is official, but if you look at images of roof you see row upon row of large SUVs.

(^.^) to say nothing of fact that the images were of the top deck of the parking garage where there is no roof
