"One-fourth of a cup"

Writer Andrew Hansen

Do people not know that the measurement 1/4 is usually spoken as "a quarter?" I'm watching cooking videos on TikTok and every home cook keeps saying "one fourth of a cup" and "one fourth of a tablespoon."

WTF? Who does this? Do they walk up to the deli counter and ask for one fourth of a pound of cheese?

by Anonymousreply 30July 19, 2022 7:21 PM

They go to McDonalds and ask for a Fourth Pounder.

by Anonymousreply 1July 18, 2022 4:57 PM

TikTok is not for the intelligent.

by Anonymousreply 2July 18, 2022 4:58 PM

Formal recipes online and in books generally do not ever read, 'a quarter of a cup,' OP.

by Anonymousreply 3July 18, 2022 4:59 PM

They're self taught from internet recipes and have never heard anyone speak any if this out loud.

by Anonymousreply 4July 18, 2022 4:59 PM

"Half past a monkey's ass, a quarter to his balls" kind of talk is not for recipes, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5July 18, 2022 5:04 PM

That's what it says on the measuring cup, "1/4th Cup.

by Anonymousreply 6July 18, 2022 5:06 PM

Be happy they are trying to understand fractions, fool.

by Anonymousreply 7July 18, 2022 5:10 PM

I can think of a ton of other things that annoy me more.

by Anonymousreply 8July 18, 2022 5:22 PM

^^Like annoying, clueless OP.

by Anonymousreply 9July 18, 2022 5:26 PM

Eldergays clearly running out of things to hiss about.

by Anonymousreply 10July 18, 2022 5:28 PM

People who teach themselves how to cook talk that way. It doesn't bother me.

by Anonymousreply 11July 18, 2022 5:30 PM

They are interchangeable, who fucking cares? 1/4=one quarter.

by Anonymousreply 12July 18, 2022 5:32 PM

Back in the 1950s, my dad did a lot of construction work during the summers, and one year he worked with a guy who couldn't read a ruler or measuring tape, but he was a hard worker and needed a job. The guy taught himself, first by saying "1 inch and 3 of the little lines" and by the end of the summer had mastered "one-half" and "one-fourth." No one made fun of him. In fact, the older guys had run into it before, and they said he did a good job.

We just don't live in a society like that anymore. Now it's all about sitting online, judging people. Even DL isn't like that anymore. We used to judge stupid celebrities or dumb reality stars. Now half of our posts are about some nobody kid on social media doing kid stuff that they'll grow out of.

by Anonymousreply 13July 18, 2022 5:34 PM

Don’t confuse the children left behind. They’re still trying to figure out clock faces.

by Anonymousreply 14July 18, 2022 5:35 PM

The whole fracas could be avoided by just saying three tablespoons.

by Anonymousreply 16July 18, 2022 5:39 PM

It's people like r16 that cause unrest.

by Anonymousreply 17July 18, 2022 5:40 PM

excuse me, is this datalounge or frau-a-lounge?

by Anonymousreply 18July 18, 2022 5:41 PM

People that measure dry ingredients in a measuring cup meant for liquids are more annoying.

by Anonymousreply 20July 18, 2022 5:48 PM

Most recipes work fine as long as you bother to use any measuring cup of any kind.

This isn't complex chemistry or rocket fuel formula.

by Anonymousreply 21July 18, 2022 5:50 PM

r19 r16, there are four tablespoons in a quarter-cup, not three.

by Anonymousreply 22July 19, 2022 6:41 PM

This may be the pettiest complaint of the year on DL, which is really saying something.

by Anonymousreply 23July 19, 2022 6:43 PM

Finally! The question we all wanted to know the answer but were afraid to ask.

by Anonymousreply 24July 19, 2022 6:48 PM

My parents are in their 70s and have always said quarter in reference.

However, I’ve always said “one-fourth” or “15 minutes until 6:00.” I like my way better.

by Anonymousreply 25July 19, 2022 6:51 PM

Actually, they are playing it smart, OP. They know better than to assume that the viewers know that "a quarter" equals "1/4." I can just see the comments below the post:

"I've looked and looked, and I don't have a quarter cup. Is that like a shot glass?"

"Is that the amount of liquid that can sit on a quarter?"

"Where can I buy a really nice set of coin cups?"

by Anonymousreply 26July 19, 2022 6:55 PM

He knows, r22. He's being a scamp.

by Anonymousreply 27July 19, 2022 6:56 PM

[quote]Eldergays clearly running out of things to hiss about.

As if.

by Anonymousreply 28July 19, 2022 6:59 PM

OP is just being pedantic.

And I'm a fucking school-mark when it comes to grammar and English usage.

by Anonymousreply 29July 19, 2022 7:09 PM

[quote]Formal recipes online and in books generally do not ever read, 'a quarter of a cup,' OP.

You're right, they read 1/4 c. which means "quarter cup" not "fourth cup".
