I used to love Orange Julius. I heard that the ingredients included raw egg, but I'm sure they could change that without really affecting the taste.

by Anonymousreply 1January 25, 2024 9:17 PM

I liked Orange Julius. I remember eating at Karmelkorn as a kid.

I also liked Roy Rogers which was in our mall when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 2January 25, 2024 9:52 PM

I still miss Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips.

Double hushpuppies, please.🤫🐶🐶

by Anonymousreply 4January 25, 2024 10:22 PM

I loved Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour. Always a treat to go there for special occasions.

by Anonymousreply 5January 25, 2024 11:10 PM

There used to be an Orange Julius about a block down the street from Berkeley's main entrance. There I had my first and last drink. Ghastly stuff highly over sweetened.

In St. Louis, we had Pope's Cafeterias. Pope's started out providing food service to large manufacturing plants. Later, it opened cafeterias in downtown and midtown St. Louis. With the advent of malls, Pope's branched out and had a traditional cafeteria at just about every major shopping mall in the St. Louis area. In 1966, Pope's opened Pope's Seven Kitchens, which was a precursor to the modern food court. There were seven different "kitchenettes" in one store that provided snack foods, Mexican, Chinese, Seafood, Continental, Traditional American and a steak house. You'd get a tray (like any other cafeteria) and get the food you wanted from the different "cuisines," then proceed to the cashier.

Hm. Orange Julius is owned by Berkshire Hathaway. I had no idea.

I also really liked them (and still do). It isn't that Orange Julius died so much, but malls did. The sole Orange Julius in my area shares space with a Dairy Queen in a stand alone building.

by Anonymousreply 8January 26, 2024 12:16 AM

I remember when Chik filly was only in malls.

by Anonymousreply 9January 26, 2024 12:23 AM

Wasn't Farrell's the place to go for some kind of big birthday Sundea? The wait staff would sing and bring over some collasal dish?

by Anonymousreply 10January 26, 2024 12:25 AM

In Texas, DQ is a drive-thru. I had no idea it had ever been in malls. I do remember being relieved when the Galleria (Houston) added a McDonald's. It also had a Magic Crepe and later a decent Chinese restaurant. Hickory Farms was down on the first level and I visited it occasionally. I remember mall cafeterias; Picadilly comes to mind.

by Anonymousreply 11January 26, 2024 12:29 AM

I worked at an Orange Julius stand at a fair in Southern CAlif. At the time, they used fresh- squeezed orange juice. The powder they used, I don’t know what was in it. I’m guessing there were some milk solids in there.

You could ask to put a raw egg in there, but I dont remember anyone requesting that.

Yes, it was delicious.

Years later came strawberry Julius, which was delicious, also.

In the DC area, for Harvest House (and Pope's, R6), substitute Hot Shoppes. There was a Hot Shoppes cafeteria at the mall where I worked when I was in college. I used to go there for dinner when I was working the evening shift. The food was good - basic American cooking at a reasonable price. Normal, not gargantuan, portions. Imagine that! Hot Shoppes was not only found at malls. They also had stand-alone restaurants with car-hop service, or at least they did when I was little kid in the '60s. It seemed so exotic!

We are a poorer country for the loss of these local chains. Everything is so homogenized now.

Another, more upscale, mall chain not mentioned in the video was the Magic Pan. That's where I went for dinner if I wanted to splurge. It was a crepe restaurant and, by the standards of the time and place, really good. I would love to have their Potage St Germain, their ham and cheese palacsinta or their coquilles St Jacques crepes again.

Orange julius Easy to make , i use frozen oj, there is vanilla and milk, i use half and half. Alot of sugar. Dump all the ingredients ( sub the half and half for heavy cream) add a bunch of ice and you have yourself a orange julius shake. DEVINE.

by Anonymousreply 14January 26, 2024 12:55 AM

God, I loved Orange Julius. A couple of DQs in town supposedly still have them on the menu. I keep telling myself I have to drive by but never do. The closest I've found at the store is Naked Juice's Orange Vanilla Creme, but they suddenly disappeared

I liked DQ for a while when they actually had really good grill broiled burgers. That and a side of fries was great, and not all that expensive.

At some point they went to the shitty stuff that most of the other chains use. But for a while in the 90s and early 00s it was really quite good.

I used to love York Steak House (RIP). It was steak house set up like a cafeteria. Located primarily in malls.

When I was in college, I often treated myself to a meal at York Steak House on a Sunday afternoon (after the brunch crowd was gone). They had great desserts.

Good food. Good prices.

by Anonymousreply 17January 26, 2024 1:18 AM

Yes, York was kind of like Ponderosa, which was kind of like Hoss Steakhouse, etc. etc. etc.

by Anonymousreply 18January 26, 2024 1:20 AM

Farrell's was fabulous fun for everyone

by Anonymousreply 19January 26, 2024 1:38 AM

Is Sbarro still a thing? Nothing spelled fun like a trip to the mall for a big greasy slice of pepperoni. If I was lucky I got a new CD from FYE.

I've never really understood why mall cafeterias fell out of favor.

I had many a good meal at Piccadilly Cafeteria and Morrison's Cafeteria.

by Anonymousreply 22January 26, 2024 1:55 AM

I had my first patty melt at Farrell's. Very good.

by Anonymousreply 23January 26, 2024 1:56 AM

R21 holy shit I never heard about this. 22 dead, 28 injured. And the pilot survived with a broken leg and arm. Talk about guilt!

Orange Julius is vanilla ice cream and orange juice. It's really that simple.

by Anonymousreply 25January 26, 2024 2:19 AM

I'm from Texas, and I love cafeterias. I hated them when I was growing up, but now as an adult I appreciate them.

by Anonymousreply 26January 26, 2024 2:23 AM

Sbarro's is still a thing but not in too many places, and the quality - not that it was ever grand, but it's truly terrible now.

by Anonymousreply 27January 26, 2024 2:32 AM

Are there still Mrs. Field's cookies? They used to be everywhere. Debbi Field's used to be a regular on TV talk shows, but I haven't seen her in years.

by Anonymousreply 28January 26, 2024 2:38 AM

Sbarro's was in bankruptcy for a while, but it's still around.

by Anonymousreply 29January 26, 2024 2:38 AM

Yeah, Mrs. Fields cookie stores are still around. Debbi Fields, IMO, had no charisma. She had her own cooking show for a while and it was not enjoyable.

by Anonymousreply 31January 26, 2024 2:43 AM

Yes about Morrison's Cafeteria. Basic but good food at a reasonable price.

by Anonymousreply 32January 26, 2024 2:44 AM

R17, I remember York Steak House. They had the best bleu cheese dressing, I’ve never tasted anything else that good anywhere else.

by Anonymousreply 33January 26, 2024 2:49 AM

r17 and r33, there is one York left in Columbus, Ohio that I frequent. Growing up in New Jersey, we went to York after church on Sundays ,and the rolls (my favorite) taste just as good to me all these years later. I do love bleu cheese, and I love the bleu cheese at York, but I can't remember if it tastes the same.

by Anonymousreply 34January 26, 2024 3:07 AM

My grandparents would take us to Farrell’s every year after our piano recital.

We also did a few birthday parties with the giant sundae - a silver punch bowl with a mountain of various flavored ice cream scoops, decorated with whipped cream and plastic circus animals. The would beat a big drum and make the whole restaurant sing “Happy Birthday.”

by Anonymousreply 36January 26, 2024 3:41 AM

Also no apostrophe in Sbarro, fat whores. Why do people imagine every restaurant or store name to be a possessive?

by Anonymousreply 37January 26, 2024 3:49 AM

We're still around in the Midwest!

by Anonymousreply 38January 26, 2024 4:22 AM

Tell me about it, R37. "Nordstrom's" sounds so trashy.

by Anonymousreply 39January 26, 2024 3:19 PM

This video made me remember Roy Rogers (roast beef) and Hot Shoppes cafeterias.

More recently I frequented Panda (orange chicken) and Sbarro (cheesy baked ziti, garlic rolls and pizza).

I live in a region with a lot of Pepsi contracts (including a large institutional recent employer). REALLY annoying. I had to move back to trashland from California about a dozen years ago. Give me an icy fountain Coke!

by Anonymousreply 40January 26, 2024 3:27 PM

I used to love Long John Silver's, which are mostly standalone, but our old mall had one inside.

The food was great but 45 minutes later, like clockwork, I'd always get a bad case of the shits. I missed seeing Aliens in HS because as I sat down with friends in the theater waiting for the movie to start, I almost shit my pants. Never mind the alien bursting through Ripley's abdomen.....I had one coming out of my ass!

by Anonymousreply 41January 26, 2024 4:20 PM

Is Roy Rogers still around anywhere? I remember them on the NJ Turnpike, or maybe it was the Garden State Parkway. Stopping for french fries was a road-trip tradition.

by Anonymousreply 42January 26, 2024 7:23 PM

R42 Apparently they are in a handful of states, mostly Maryland and PA.

Two in NJ - in Brick and Pine Beach.

by Anonymousreply 43January 26, 2024 7:34 PM

Oh, they used to be at every fourth rest stop or so. Thanks!

by Anonymousreply 44January 26, 2024 7:39 PM

Does Hot Dog on a Stick still exist? As a kid, I used to love their cheese dogs.

by Anonymousreply 45January 26, 2024 7:41 PM

DQ is Dairy Queen? It was delicious in the 60 and 70s. Quality of ingredients was better and more basic, I am assuming. Of course. Many burger joints were good into the 70s. Tasted like burgers. Fried food cooked in tallow or lard. Ice cream that still contain cream and tasted of it.

by Anonymousreply 46January 26, 2024 7:47 PM

It does, at least on Northern California, r45.

by Anonymousreply 47January 26, 2024 9:07 PM

Yes, HD on Stick is still around. Cheese on stick was good. With mustard.

by Anonymousreply 49January 26, 2024 9:40 PM

R43, the ones in PA are all on the PA Turnpike - not easy to get to unless you're going that way anyway.

RR locations are scattered around the DC area in regular suburban shopping centers, which is where I first became addicted to their fried chicken. Roy Rogers has the best fried chicken of any of the chains. Now that someone brought it up, I might take a drive out to the nearest PA Tpk rest stop tomorrow and get enough for a couple of nights. MMM-mmm.

by Anonymousreply 50January 27, 2024 12:50 AM

r45 beat me to it - Hot Dog on a Stick! I felt sorry for the kids that worked there and had to wear those ridiculous uniforms.

Along those lines, what about Der Weinerschnitzel? (or however you spell it)

by Anonymousreply 51January 27, 2024 12:58 AM

The uniforms at HD on Stick were cool.

One Halloween, in the Castro, I saw a small group of guys dressed up in the HD on Stick uniforms.

by Anonymousreply 52January 27, 2024 2:05 AM

I almost forgot about Kenny Rogers' Roasters. Or whatever it was called.

by Anonymousreply 54January 27, 2024 9:44 PM

Orange Julius had good hot dogs. The real fundie kids shunned Orange Julius because of the devil logo on the cups.
