Obese is a slur!

Writer John Thompson

Nope, obese is a term you earn through laziness, poor choices, and rarely hormones.

by Anonymousreply 3February 8, 2023 9:14 PM

Ample is the preferred term.

by Anonymousreply 4February 8, 2023 9:15 PM

It will soon be replaced in medical literature with "person of size".

by Anonymousreply 6February 8, 2023 9:16 PM

Personally, I always liked 'lard-ass'.

It's so vivid.

by Anonymousreply 7February 8, 2023 9:17 PM

Would there actually be a term overweight individuals would be OK with? Doubtful.

Let's be honest. It's not the word people are upset about. They are upset because people throw something demeaning in their face. And those people are either insensitive or deliberately hurtful. They don't have to be this way. They could just shut up. It's not other peoples business to make an assessment on somebody's physical shape. You find somebody overweight? Don't say anything. Is that so hard? Why involve yourself in insulting someone? And don't pretend you want to help the overweight individual. That's not what you want.

by Anonymousreply 8February 8, 2023 9:20 PM

I always thought 'obese' was technical term referring to people who were like 50% or more over their ideal weight.

by Anonymousreply 10February 8, 2023 9:27 PM

Why not use "doubleplus un-thin"?

by Anonymousreply 11February 8, 2023 9:40 PM

Obese is a medical term, ya dumb cunts.

by Anonymousreply 12February 8, 2023 9:46 PM

[quote]Would there actually be a term overweight individuals would be OK with?

I usually describe obese people as 'Rubenesque' and other obese people seem fine with it.

Dr Anita B. Etin? That first one's a troll, OP.

by Anonymousreply 14February 8, 2023 9:52 PM

What do they want us to call them?

Gravitationally challenged?

by Anonymousreply 15February 8, 2023 9:53 PM

Why can’t we use tact to point out negative characteristics of a person anymore? Is everyone that sensitive?

by Anonymousreply 17February 8, 2023 9:54 PM

Thank you, r10, r12. It's the accepted term for people to clock in at a certain weight for their height beyond which numerous diseases and disorders start to clock in and take advantage of a weakened and diseased body. It's also a term synonymous with premature death, and:

Higher insurance premiums for the rest of us. They've NEVER explained why they expect the rest of us to subsidize them with more poor service for the rest of us if they usurp untold millions into care for obesity-related illnesses and premature deaths among them who embrace and promote themselves until biology takes its inevitable course.

^This scenario is on the employer level. Imagine in Medicare or Medicaid reveal how much is spent on obesity-related illnesses? Fucking mayhem.

As a regular Facebook user, I have been schooled to understand that the acceptable term is “beautiful.”

As when a small group is deciding whether to take the car or walk. All will survey the opinions of the others and then sort of just … delicately turn to the beautiful person, whose determination settles the question.

To take the car.

by Anonymousreply 24February 8, 2023 10:27 PM

I'm offended by guys I'm attracted to not wanting to date me.

It's offensive.

"No" is a slur.

"You're not attractive" is a slur.

"I don't care that you're hung" is excluding me.

by Anonymousreply 26February 8, 2023 10:31 PM

If you’re hung well enough you might have like 10-20 pounds leeway.

by Anonymousreply 27February 8, 2023 10:35 PM

You dipshits. Get your night nurse to look at things before you reply to them.

OPs tweet is a joke. Not sure? [bold]Well, the twitter post about obesity is from someone named...[/bold]

[bold]DR. ANITA B. ETIN[/bold]... In case you still don't get it, it's a drag queen-esc version of "I NEED TO BE EATING."

Then, if you visit "her" twitter, it's obviously a troll account mocking affirming-type fat people.

FFS, recognize jokes when they present obvious evidence of being jokes, people. Gay's are supposed to be clever, so sit down if you don't got it anymore.

by Anonymousreply 31February 8, 2023 10:52 PM

It is insanely offensive to compare a medical term (which is what obese is) to slur that has no purpose other than to belittle a group of people.

These people need to be ground down, and driven into hiding.

When do they start comparing their fatsperiences to the Shoah?

by Anonymousreply 32February 8, 2023 10:59 PM

Obese is a medical term, but it’s not unusual for these terms to become stigmatized. Moron is also a medical term.

by Anonymousreply 33February 8, 2023 10:59 PM

I like to use the term "Lizzo" now that both Diamond and Kirstie are six feet under.

by Anonymousreply 34February 8, 2023 11:04 PM

Hahahaha!

[bold]Jebus Christo you people RESPONDING HERE as if it's not-a-troll-tweet are DUMB DUMB DUMB.[/bold]

It's a joke from a troll OBVIOUSLY but you dipshits just see something that triggers you, you lose all critical thinking skills (if you had any to start) and then go reply without even reading the other replies because, there's NO WAY you could ever miss an obvious troll joke. Oy Vey. Be Better, gayz.

Bullshit, R36.

There's, of course, going to be outliers in ANY-AND-EVERY GROUP that whines and invents ways to play victim but overall, unless you can point me to any MEANINGFUL statements from a large (haha) contingent of obese people about this, you're living in a bubble of people fooling you. and playing to your biases.

by Anonymousreply 45February 9, 2023 12:05 AM

It’s medical terminology. I think it’s becoming a bit tiresome to accuse people who warn about the health risks associated with obesity as engaging in fat shaming.

by Anonymousreply 46February 9, 2023 12:59 AM

Will Chrissy Mess ever lose the weight? Or Lizzo? Many other slobby celebrities have lost weight, so hopefully they will grow up and do the same.

[R40] Helen Hodges could understand 'Black lady' in the description, but not 'big fat' ? Seriously ? If they wrote 'petite svelte' she would understand it better ? It would've made more sense to her because when she looks in the mirror she sees herself as 'petite and svelte' ?

A physician who came under fire for comments claiming that obesity is more of genetics than lifestyle in a “60 Minutes” interview earlier this month is now a member of the Biden USDA’s 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which will help determine dietary standards for Americans over the coming years.

Dr. 𝗙𝗮𝘁ima Cody Stanford, a doctor specializing in obesity medicine at Mass General Health in Boston, claims diet and exercise have little impact on the disease that affects nearly half of all Americans, so what does she think people should do about it?

“The number one cause of obesity is genetics,” Stanford told CBS’ Lesley Stahl.

“That means that, if you were born to parents that have obesity, you have a 50 to 85% likelihood of having the disease yourself even with optimal diet, exercise, sleep management, stress management,” she added.

Stanford elaborated during the interview to claim that an overwhelming majority of U.S. doctors hold a bias toward obese patients.

“Are you saying that doctors don’t understand obesity? Doctors?” Stahl asked.

“𝑫𝒐𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒅𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒚,” Stanford confirmed.

See there’s a social media trend for posting overweight dog videos, describing said featured unfortunate hounds as ‘chonky’. Raise you their fat owners and others from the land of the fats as the chonkiest chonks that ever chonked? They like to think they’re cute as they gorge on their fast food snacks of choice. Is that description cute enough for them? The chonkies or even chonkers (let them chose) could then park themselves among the cuntiest cunt collectives - just to be sociable.

by Anonymousreply 63February 9, 2023 8:09 AM

It's at the point where no nouns or adjectives can be used to describe then.

It's like the proverbial elephant in the room.

by Anonymousreply 64February 9, 2023 8:32 AM

I'm on vacation on the beach, and yesterday my bf and I watched as a GROTESQUELY obese woman in a bathing suit heaved herself onto the beach (I think it was a one-piece, but her ass was so big it looked like a thong). It was nothing but ripples and rollers of fat. One butt-cheek was the size of a beach-ball. Another fatty had to helped out of the surf by two bystanders, as he kept rolling over each time he tried to lift his amplitude out of the surf. After laughing of course, and making the requisite simile to beached whales, we decided that fat people should, indeed, be shamed.

So I'm a cunt -- sue me.

by Anonymousreply 65February 9, 2023 11:51 AM

Obese is a fact. If you are do something about it or deal with it. You're unhealthy fat!

by Anonymousreply 67February 9, 2023 3:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 71February 9, 2023 4:46 PM

R1, "literally" doesn't mean what she thinks it does.

by Anonymousreply 72February 9, 2023 4:48 PM

Of course, most people use their BMI to determine if they are obese or not.

A study was released last year that showed if we continue to go by the BMI, then more than 90% of pro-football players who appear to be "in shape and athletic built" are actually obese by the BMI standards. I will try to find the research once again, and post it here.

by Anonymousreply 73February 9, 2023 4:56 PM

Would be less offensive if it were capitalized?

by Anonymousreply 74February 9, 2023 4:57 PM

I will substitute the name "Whoopi" for the word "obese".

For example, "Look how 'Whoopi' actress Valerie Bertinelli is these days" .

by Anonymousreply 81February 9, 2023 5:44 PM

R80 - Good point. So should football players still be considered obese, or do they not have to follow the BMI regulations ?

by Anonymousreply 84February 9, 2023 9:08 PM

So, how are we supposed to refer to these people? What is the politically conscious way?

Or does it depend on how they identify?

by Anonymousreply 85February 9, 2023 9:14 PM

[quote]A study was released last year that showed if we continue to go by the BMI, then more than 90% of pro-football players who appear to be "in shape and athletic built" are actually obese by the BMI standards.

In NZ we have a very high population of Samoans and Tongans who are naturally heavily built. We are listed as a country with high obesity as a result as the BMIs are the decision making factor.

Yes we do have lots of obese people as well, but you never see the giant fatties that I see when I holiday in the USA and most people I pass in the street are of normal weight. BMIs are not a good measure of obesity - it should be done on body fat composition.

by Anonymousreply 88February 9, 2023 10:02 PM

There's always those who come huffing into these threads to say that BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, as if they're taking a break between sets while training for Mr. Olympia.

Football players have a lot of muscle but also a lot of fat. Many use steroids and consume several thousand calories a day to create giant bodies. That's not healthy. Same with bodybuilders. To be a weight that would be considered obese while having a low bady fat percentage means hugely muscular and almost guaranteed to be on steroids. It would apply to a fraction of a percent of the population.

The rest of the people with obese BMI are FAT!

by Anonymousreply 101February 10, 2023 4:41 PM

What we have today is the normalization of Obesity.

Today most people are FAT or MUSCULAR or both.

by Anonymousreply 102February 10, 2023 5:45 PM

Why do the obese think they have the right to take up more space than the svelte?

by Anonymousreply 104February 10, 2023 5:58 PM

Morbidly obese. That's what they say.

by Anonymousreply 105February 10, 2023 6:04 PM

All of this "obese" victimology is not presented as a joke. And even if it's a joke now, it will soon be considered a slur. Joining the never ending list of people that are offended.

Black people don't have a choice. Gay people don't have a choice.

Overweight people? Some - less than they'd have you believe - don't have a choice but they are probably not the militant crowd. The overweight people that do have a choice are claiming it as an epithet because it excuses them from taking responsibility and doing anything to change the situation.

I have a medical problem that affects my gait I sometimes walk as if I'm drunk. People notice. Is it a slur to call me a drunk? Should I care? It can be embarrassing for me, but hat's MY problem. Ultimately, unless I'm being physically abused because people call me a drunk, who the fuck cares about whether it embarrasses me? Or labels me?

Get a grip, people. The victim epidemic is tiring and dilutes what are real and harmful slurs. No one gets shot, beaten, or attacked for being overweight.

by Anonymousreply 106February 10, 2023 6:12 PM

I prefer "womon of size"!

by Anonymousreply 108February 10, 2023 6:17 PM

[quote]There's always those who come huffing into these threads to say that BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, as if they're taking a break between sets while training for Mr. Olympia.

Actually, I made one of those posts and I am not overweight. I was a bit heavier about 5 years ago but I fixed it using diet and exercise and have maintained it for the last 4. I am in no way an advocate or defender of obesity - quite the opposite, especially since I know diet and exercise work.

It's a fact that BMI is not a good measure and body fat composition is.

by Anonymousreply 109February 10, 2023 8:45 PM
