Names Dogs Ruined

Writer John Thompson

I knew an old guy named Rex.

That's a dog's name now. You can't use it on a person now. Dogs ruined it for people

by Anonymousreply 53April 22, 2020 8:19 PM

Spot -- my great uncle had that name.

by Anonymousreply 1March 2, 2020 2:14 PM

Max has become more popular among canines than among humans in the last few decades.

by Anonymousreply 2March 2, 2020 2:22 PM

Schotzie. You can't call your GF Schotzie anymore.

by Anonymousreply 3March 2, 2020 2:24 PM

To this day, my parents regret naming me Flufferbutt.

by Anonymousreply 4March 2, 2020 2:24 PM

Not thats it’s a great name, but too many people are naming their dogs Bella. I’m really sick of Bella.

by Anonymousreply 5March 2, 2020 2:31 PM

Max and Maggie rule this list. Molly is becoming bigger now, too.

by Anonymousreply 6March 2, 2020 2:40 PM

Fetch.

It’s never going to happen.

by Anonymousreply 7March 2, 2020 2:47 PM

If I had a son, I would actually like to name him Max because it would sound great with my last name.

I think this Max solidified it as a dog name for my generation, though.

So many people names are dog names now. Such as Sally, Jake, Bailey, Shelley, and Luke

by Anonymousreply 9March 2, 2020 2:52 PM

Bitch. —When I’m taking down some hussy or wretched queen, and call them “Bitch!”, it bothers me to know sweet female dogs are called that too.

by Anonymousreply 10March 2, 2020 2:54 PM

Jack

‘Jack, off the bed.’ ‘Jack, off the cat.’

by Anonymousreply 12March 2, 2020 3:00 PM

If dogs ruined Rex, DataLounge ruined Opie.

A dog ruined my sofa once.

Maybe it's time to name dogs Kayden or Jayden.

by Anonymousreply 15March 2, 2020 3:38 PM

Rover would have been such a cool name for a guy.

by Anonymousreply 18March 2, 2020 4:55 PM

OP in fairness to the dogs, I don't know a single one of them that named themselves, People name dogs so blame the people not the dogs.

No, uber manly names are coming back.

Not quite the same but Rove McManus was a talk show host in Australia.

If you are with that low self-esteem, everything in this world is ruined for you.

by Anonymousreply 24March 3, 2020 3:58 PM

Rex appears to have been making a comeback since about 2000.

I have never actually met a dog named Fido. I don't think I've met one named Rover either. Have they died out as dog names?

by Anonymousreply 26March 3, 2020 7:40 PM

Probably never met an African American with a weird name either. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

I had an uncle Old Yeller, but they shot him.

Dylan has always been a dog name to me. In the late 70s-early 80s I knew 4 people with dogs named Dylan. When it became a kid’s name I thought “That kid isn’t going to be any smarter than a dog.”

I was right,

by Anonymousreply 33April 21, 2020 10:17 PM

I've met quite a few dogs named Bowie since DB passed. Same for Ziggy.

by Anonymousreply 34April 21, 2020 10:21 PM

I'm breaking format here, but one name people have ruined for dogs is Loki. I think around 20% of all dogs in the Pacific Northwest are named Loki. Every one of their idiotic owners will earnestly inform you, as if they were a serious scholar of world mythology and you just a clueless simpleton, "That's the Norse god of mischief!"

by Anonymousreply 37April 21, 2020 11:57 PM

Barky Von Schnauser.

I was saving it for my first born

by Anonymousreply 41April 22, 2020 12:23 AM

When I was a kid I disliked being named Rex because everyone had a dog named Rex. In my life, I've probably met fewer than five other Rexes. Now I don't mind the name. You (usually) don't have to spell it for people, it's easy to hear when someone calls to you, and when you give your name at a restaurant, you know you're the only one when your name is called. There are far worse names.

by Anonymousreply 42April 22, 2020 12:35 AM

R8, It is interesting how Rex the dog evokes something different from one generation to another.

Somehow "Michelle" seems like a good name for a dog.

by Anonymousreply 44April 22, 2020 12:39 AM

Eeeeps ! I'm R43 who is not fast enough ! I thought I would be R42!

Sorry, real R42 !

by Anonymousreply 45April 22, 2020 12:47 AM

[quote]Not thats it’s a great name, but too many people are naming their dogs Bella. I’m really sick of Bella.

Yes! God that name is so tired! The ironic thing is that most dogs that are named Bella are ugly as hell.

by Anonymousreply 46April 22, 2020 12:50 AM

I imagine idiots spelling it Reks or even worse, Wrecks, R42.

by Anonymousreply 48April 22, 2020 9:58 AM

Prince. Prince Phillip had it first.

by Anonymousreply 49April 22, 2020 10:15 AM

[quote]I imagine idiots spelling it Reks or even worse, Wrecks, [R42].

Fortunately, there's surprisingly little of that. Rex is a name that's universally easy to pronounce and spell. That said, a server at a take-out restaurant once spelled my name as Tex, which I got kind of a kick out of.

by Anonymousreply 50April 22, 2020 7:06 PM

No one has had a dog named Rex in decades, but that may be why no one has named their kid Rex in about 100 years.

by Anonymousreply 52April 22, 2020 8:14 PM

Max? I’’ve never known a man named Max.
