Mount Everest - 2018 - part 2

Writer John Thompson

I did a search, so apologies if there's another part 2 thread somewhere.

Charlotte Fox died, ironically not from a mountain top but from falling down her stairs.

We were using the Japanese Climber thread as part two, but this one might draw more eyes.

Wow - that's crazy. Especially to all those people who say things like, "Might as well do (something incredibly dangerous), because life holds no guarantees and you could be hit by a bus tomorrow."

This woman did it, and then fell down some dumb stairs. RIP.

And to all those who haunt these Everest threads: I have seen Everest (not climbed); it was dangerous to get there, but probably worth it to the Everest-obsessed, so you might as well do it, because there are dangerous stairs everywhere.

R2 here again. Changing my advice, because so many on the DL seem to have health issues and I don't want to encourage anyone to accidentally off themselves.

The dangers of getting to Everest were: altitude sickness, which surprisingly didn't affect me. Malaria, I took the prophylactics but those have side effects. The roads taken to get near Everest, which are incredibly dangerous. The food, which made even hardened stomachs sick, but again didn't affect me - maybe because I have spent a lot of time in Developing World countries. And when I went there was the threat of snowfall, in which case, we would have to walk out, which would have probably killed us.

All to say that if you're physically hearty, not scared of huge heights, and have a death wish, go see Everest. For me, it was worth it.

Poor Charlotte.

More people will remember her failures. Way to secure a weird legacy.

[post redacted because linking to dailymail.co.uk clearly indicates that the poster is either a troll or an idiot (probably both, honestly.) Our advice is that you just ignore this poster but whatever you do, don't click on any link to this putrid rag.]

Does that mean some of the Sherpas are thieves?

Ok here's a mystery we might be able to solve from afar.

R2 thanks for the warning. I was just thinking about the trek up to Base Camp the other day, but have potentially serious heart/lung issues and know it is not for me now. However! I can vicariously live the experience through others. I forgot about all the dangers involved in getting to Everest. It is definitely not for the faint spirited. Also, RIP Charlotte Fox.

Just saw Mountain, the docu narrated by Wm Defoe.

I mistakenly thought it was about Everest, but it's about human interaction with mountains in general. Essentially, it is a National Geographic special with spectacular footage. There are no interviews and not much about the annual Everest climb with the exception of one scene where they show a long line of hikers and he says, "this is not hiking it's queuing."

It's slow and some of his narration is over the top (kinda like NFL films) but you definitely get some unbelievable footage from the hiker's perspective. Those people are freaks.

The Weather Channel has the most ridiculous clickbait titles

"Mount Everest Fecal Time Bomb Ticking"

On Sunday I watched a mini series about Hillary, the first white guy on Everest.

He was also the first person to drive to the South Pole (the Brits punished him for this), and in 1977, after he joined Neil Armstrong on a flight that landed at the North Pole, he became the first to stand still both poles and on Everest.
