[quote][R326] - No, he's just past it. The Lynley series was his apex, and after that he kind of sank. He's about sixty now. He's kept working but not too starrily. I think he's one of the few on a very long-term happy marriage with a couple of kids. Never heard anything about him being a drinker. He was really handsome in the first few Lynleys, although I began to find the character a pain in the arse. I didn't blame Helen for leaving.
Nathaniel was super hot, very attractive, in all his early series, most of which were shown on PBS and on A&E, while it was still an arts & entertainment network. Have you caught any of them? “Piece of Cake” and so many other series were shown in the US on PBS and A&E.
Based on his looks alone, I honestly thought he'd be a much bigger star, especially in the superficial US, where actors and actresses aren't allowed to age.
Nat was in the Derek Jarmen film, “War Requiem”. I was aware of Nat way before the Lynley series. He was mostly in period and historical series, at least that's where I first saw him in the US.
Nat was also quite attractive in Mel Gibson’s version of “Hamlet”, he portrayed Laertes. He was also in a film version of “Othello” as Cassio. I recall there was a third Shakespeare film role he played.
In NYC, I saw him onstage in “The Merchant of Venice”. He was so gorgeous. Dustin Hoffman and Twiggy’s husband, forgot his name, were also in the play. Years down the line, Nat was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Henry VIII for ‘Wolf Hall”. Not sure if he appeared in the TV version. I’ve always tried to see every film and TV series appeared in, I’m not sure he if he appeared in the TV version of ‘Wolf Hall”.
Nat did full frontal nudity in “Wide Sargasso Sea”. Pics are online.
I assumed the weight gain over the past few years was from drinking. He’s not that old to look so bad. In the most recent photos I saw of him, his face was chubby and he had a double chin. He still has his hair, but it’s mostly grey.
His physical decline doesn’t take away from his acting ability, I wonder why he’s not being hired. Many other older British actors who look worse than Nat are still working. I'm wondered if he might be ill.
