This is actually true. High school boys are getting perms to get that shaggy, moppy look.

by Anonymousreply 3May 1, 2023 1:10 AM

NYTimes style is TWO YEARS late to the trend. At least.

Not only has this been going on for years but your average guy isn't taking fashion cues from K-pop. I agree that it's TikTok that influenced more than anything.

So sick of people trying to make K-pop a thing here.

by Anonymousreply 5May 1, 2023 1:25 AM

R5, K-pop is huge on TikTok.

by Anonymousreply 6May 1, 2023 1:28 AM

Is that how all the kids are getting that broccoli stalk haircut?

by Anonymousreply 7May 1, 2023 1:29 AM

How dare they be, r4! When we all know how YOU'RE so up to date with all the fads and novelties!

by Anonymousreply 8May 1, 2023 1:36 AM

R8 As a university prof, I see it all, hunty. The poodle has been in for years now.

by Anonymousreply 9May 1, 2023 1:41 AM

R6 Guys aren't paying attention to the K-Pop TikToks, They're paying attention to the actual American influencers who got popular off the app, of which there are several.

And I have the impression the fashion boys over age 19 have moved on, or back, to the bowl cut.

Wake me when the mullet comes back.

As someone (a man), who grew up with naturally curly hair, and was tortured endlessly for it …

Fuck these people and the boat they rode in on.

Yes, yes, bitter party of one, but still fuck these people.

by Anonymousreply 13May 1, 2023 2:14 AM

I am genuinely curious. You were made fun of because you had naturally curly hair? How did they tease you? What names did they call you? That is an odd one to me.

by Anonymousreply 14May 1, 2023 2:21 AM

not r13 but I was called "perm head" because of my naturally curly hair.

by Anonymousreply 15May 1, 2023 2:26 AM

I had red hair r14, so “Bozo” was thrown around a bit.

In retrospect, it is funny how my Mom was both sympathetic, but also mentioned how she had ro curl her hair, and I should be “grateful”.

For men, there just aren’t a lot of good looks with curly hair IMHO. I will say, once I was a teenager, it had become just “wavy”, and was manageable.

by Anonymousreply 16May 1, 2023 2:37 AM

The fusilli hair look on men right now is a big ole NO from me.

by Anonymousreply 17May 1, 2023 2:39 AM

I don't remember anyone making fun of curly hair on boys. Red hair, yes. Perhaps they just threw in curly after crucifying you for the sin of red hair.

The article makes a big deal about the K-drama BOYS OVER FLOWERS, but the Japanese series based on the original manga was aired 4 years earlier. The male lead's "curly curly perm" was frequently ridiculed by the other characters. Interestingly, he's currently starring as 17th-century unifier Tokugawa Ieyasu.

R12 mullets have already come (and gone).

by Anonymousreply 21May 1, 2023 7:09 PM

I see more guys with man-buns (putting their hair up) these days than this.

by Anonymousreply 22May 1, 2023 7:23 PM

Although Robert Reed's hair was naturally curly, he looked so much more handsome without it.

Oh good goolymoogly OP (and the NYT)

Young white guys getting perms took off a couple years before COVID. People constantly made fun of them right here on DL looking like "mushroom heads" or some such slang.

The low-key claim was that they wanted to look bi-racial. Which tracks, imo. Thing is, they wanted to look like the guy I'm posting here but they all either did their perm at Hair Cuts R Us or by their mom at home so they mostly looked like freshly styled poodles. But, yeah, perms already made a comeback.
